Game Of Thrones is coming… but when? (Picture: HBO)

All of the Game Of Thrones Emmys 2018 excitement has put one question on fans’ lips: when is Game Of Thrones back with season 8?

The eighth series of the HBO series is highly anticipated, especially as it’s been confirmed it’s the show’s swansong *sob*.

So far we’ve been treated to the odd teaser, new promo images and very little else.

However, the eighth season has been subjected to a number of leaks since filming began and producers are keen to keep the lid on the series as much as possible.

Because we’re too good to you, here we round up everything we know so far about the upcoming series of Game Of Thrones…

WARNING: Contains potential spoilers for Game Of Thrones. (We warned you…).

When is it released?

We’re not going to lie, we still don’t know the release date, with it previously just being confirmed for the ‘first half’ of 2019.

HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys narrowed the show’s release window at the Television Critics Asssociation’s press tour (via Entertainment Weekly) in July.

However, it’s now been suggested there could be even more of a delay on the last episodes than we first thought.

It’s now expected that we won’t get to see the new series until at least May.

HBO
Early snaps from the new series have already been seen (Picture: HBO)

And why’s that? Well seemingly it just won’t be ready before then – with visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer telling Huffington Post that the series wouldn’t be eligible for the Emmys next year:

‘We’re going to be toiling away on season eight until May of 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away,’ he explained.

Since shows have to air the majority of their episodes before May 31st in any given year to qualify for Emmy nominations, it’s a fair bet on those grounds that Game Of Thrones won’t be airing before then.

How many episodes are there?

Sadly, the final series will also be the shortest one yet, with just six episodes left to wrap up all the hanging plot threads in Westeros.

All of the episodes are set to be between 50 and 90 minutes long, with no two hour specials.

So why the delay, given it’s a much shorter series?

Well HBO bosses explained earlier in the year that the series just wouldn’t be ready before then, with showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wanting time to craft the strongest season finale they could.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly Casey Bloys explained: ‘Here’s what I’ll tell you: They take the time they need to do the show at its highest level of quality.

Maisie Williams initially said the show would air in April 2019 but that looks not to be the case (Picture: HBO)

As the show has gone on, it’s gotten bigger — big battle scenes, big special effects. These things take time.

He added: Here’s the one thing I can assure you: Dan and Dave were not sitting around on a beach waiting to go back to work. They’re perfectionists and this is the soonest it can come back at a level of quality that they are comfortable with.’

Jaime Lannister in Game Of Thrones (Picture: HBO)

Bloys also shot down reports the Game Of Thrones prequel led by Jane Goldman will start filming in October, stating shooting will begin in early 2019 with the project searching for a director.

Is there a trailer?

Kind of.

We’ve had our first look at what’s in store via a special HBO teaser that gives fans a tiny glimpse at Game of Thrones season eight.

The broadcaster’s 2019 preview video features snippets of HBO’s most popular shows like Big Little Lies and Veep. It’s a sneaky Thrones reveal that’s got everyone talking though.

Hidden among a ton of archive shots from season seven is a clip of Jon Snow reuniting with sister and Lady of the North Sansa Stark.

It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance, but watch carefully at the 1:10 mark and you’ll see what we’re talking about.

The reunion will be welcomed by Thrones fans, as Sansa and Arya Stark both met up after seasons apart in the last batch of episodes.

However, the hug shared doesn’t feel all that warm and others should worry if the pair’s alliance will be tested in season eight.

Another interesting thing to note is the amount of scenes in the teaser to feature Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen cosying up to each other.

Game of Thrones first look Credit: HBO
Happy to see me? (Picture: HBO)

Of course, all the moments included were from season seven, but if we’re looking at the video as a preview of what’s to come then it could imply that their romance – teased in 2018’s finale – will feature heavily in season eight.

Bloys previously revealed to Entertainment Weekly that while he doesn’t yet know when the full trailer will be released, it’s likely to be in 2018. Hoorah!

Burning castles galore

Will dragons be rampaging over Westeros? (Picture: HBO)

An early leak from the set showed House Stark’s residence at Winterfell coated in flames, with claims over 200 extras were involved in a ‘big battle scene’.

Considering Sansa was left in charge of the place in Jon Snow’s absence, could this be the first stop on the White Walker rampage now they’ve torn through the wall? And could this be Sansa’s big test of her leadership qualities she’s started to show?

The Unsullied army were also reportedly spotted filming not too far away in Toome, indicating Daenerys and Jon Snow could perhaps be involved in the conflict too.

More leaked set pictures show King’s Landing looking in a pretty rough shape too, with reports pyrotechnics had been used around the set.

There’s been previous hints from show producers (and Bran Stark’s vision) a dragon could be about to cause mayhem over King’s Landing – so could Cersei Lannister bow out via brutal scorching?

Back to the Dragonpit

Tyrion looks to be heading back to a familiar location (Picture: HBO)

The body doubles of both Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) were spotted both returning to the Italica amphitheatre ruins in Seville, where season seven’s Dragonpit sequence was filmed.

It’s perhaps unsurprising another round in the Dragonpit looks to be taking place considering season seven’s felt slightly anticlimactic – with the meeting of Daenerys, Cersei, Jon Snow, Brienne and more not really amounting to much. Could this be a more devastating encounter?

New faces

Marc Rissman has been cast from Into The Badlands (Picture: HBO)

A previous report from Watchers On The Wall indicated eight new people had been cast in the show, even though judging by the generic titles, these could be more battle fodder amid the ongoing war.

Other castings include Daniella Galligan as Sarra, which will presumably be Sarra Frey aka a granddaughter of Walder Frey.

Alice Nokes has also been cast as a character named Willa, while German actor Marc Rissman (Into The Badlands) has joined as Harry Strickland, who is the leader of the Golden Company.

You might recall Cersei sent Euron Greyjoy to bring back the Golden Company to aid her defence over the Iron Throne, so it looks like they could play a tide-turning role in the final season.

Old, returning faces

Could Edmure Tully return in season 8? (Picture: HBO)

After Metro.co.uk spoke to Tobias Menzies, he didn’t exactly rule out a potential return in the final season as Edmure Tully.

His reappearance could herald House Tully’s return, with Edmure having married Walder Frey’s daughter Roslin at the infamous Red Wedding.

Roslin is now living somewhere in Westeros with her and Edmure’s newborn son, so a return could revive their exiled house and allow them to reclaim the riverlands.

Another old face who is seemingly returning is Wilf Scolding as Rhaegar Targaryen, after deleting a post on Instagram showing him near the Belfast set.

This likely means we’ll be diving deep into Bran Stark’s visions as The Three Eyed Raven once more. After all, we’re still waiting for Jon Snow to find out his worrying connection to Daenerys.

One person who is most likely not returning is Ellie Kendrick as Meera Reed, who confirmed to Metro.co.uk she’d yet to receive a call about coming back.

Tragedy ahead?

Daenerys and Drogo Game of Thrones
We’d love nothing more than for Drogo to come back, but not like this (Picture: HBO)

The latest fan theory doing the rounds on the worldwide web has recalled a crucial moment from season two, which may have spelled the death of Daenerys Targaryen, and it’s terrifyingly plausible.

Reddit user Bronn of The Blackwater, arguably the best moniker across the entire internet, wrote: ‘I’m currently doing a re-watch, and I just finished watching S02E10. I just realised that Daenarys’ vision might be a big foreshadow.

Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen
We could see the latest Daenerys theory coming true (Picture: HBO)

‘In her vision, Dany sees the iron throne, she reached for it, but then decided to go north of the wall and found Khal Drogo with her son.

‘I think the first part already happened: Dany had the opportunity to seized the throne, by fighting Cersei, but decided to go North instead to help Jon Snow fight the Night King.

‘So, maybe the second part of the vision will happen in season 8 and Daenerys will joined Drogo and her son by dying because she decided to go North.’

Since Drago’s untimely death, rumblings that he’ll return before the HBO epic comes to a close have never really settled.

And Jason Momoa has only fuelled rumours he’s reprising his role as the war lord when he shared a picture with the surviving stars of Game of Thrones, including Emilia Clarke and Isaac Hempstead Wright.

Though, another theory poised this week claimed to have worked out Daenerys’ final chapter, predicting the Mother of Dragons will ditch Westeros altogether and set up camp in Essos, which we’d have done ages ago, to be honest.

Sadly, we’ve got an agonising wait still left to go as HBO boss Casey Bloys recently revealed Game of Thrones won’t be back until the first of next year.

Who is directing?

The director of Battle Of The Bastards is returning (Picture: HBO)

Show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are directing one episode of the final season, presumably the finale.

The rest of the episodes will be directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who was responsible for the excellent season six finale and Battle Of The Bastards, along with David Nutter, who most famously directed the Red Wedding episode.

What have the cast said about the final season?

Nathalie Emmanuel plays Missandei (Picture: HBO)

Nathalie Emmanuel previously told Metro.co.uk season eight ‘definitely will not be a rushed conclusion’ while Joe Dempsie teased it’ll be an unexpected and ‘satisfying’.

‘It’s an ending I don’t think many people will be expecting and I think, on reflection, people will really, really enjoy.’

Emilia Clarke meanwhile has stated the final season will divide viewers, with some being confused while others ‘will scream’.

In other words, it sounds like it could be an ending which is more open-ended than we’re expecting – which might not deliver when it comes to instant gratification.

If you need more GOT content, check out some of the believable, and slightly crazy theories circulating the web. You’re welcome.

The Big Bang Theory boss has admitted he has no idea how the show will end.

CBS announced last month that the US sitcom would conclude for good after the 12th season, but co-creator Bill Prady has admitted he’s still unsure how the final episode will go because him and the writers prefer not to ‘plan ahead’.

Speaking to UsMagazine.com, he said: ‘We’re approaching the final season the same way we’ve approached the 11 seasons before: with no planning whatsoever. From day one, we have never planned an arch for a season. We don’t plan ahead, we just kind of just tell the next story.’

And, although he’s still got another instalment to produce, Bill already knows he’s going to miss the cast – comprised of Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Mayim Bialik, Melissa Raunch, Kunal Nayyar, Kaley Cuoco, and Simon Helberg – because they all get on so well and have developed a strong friendship over the years.

‘I’m really, really gonna miss these people,’ he added.

‘It’s a cliché to say everyone is friends and we all get along, but everyone is friends and we all get along and we all love each other. I will miss them very much.’

By the time the show is over, the series would’ve been the longest running sitcom in television history.

Yep, that’s even longer than Friends!

Instagram Photo

It was announced in August that the latest series of the show would be its last, and one-by-one the main cast have been sending their thanks to their fans for sticking with them for the duration.

Kaley’s post on the matter featured the normally nerdy looking crew looking all dolled up for a photo session after winning an award.

In the emotional statement, she wrote: ‘This ride has been a dream come true and as life changing as it gets. No matter when it was going to end, my heart would have always been broken in two.

‘Drowning in tears, we promise to bring you the best season yet. To the fans, our crew, families, Chuck Lorre, Warner Brothers, CBS, and everyone who has supported us for so many years, thank you. We are goin’ out with a bang.’

CBB’s Kirstie Alley trolls Ryan Thomas in ‘forgetting to sh*g’ his brother Scott

Kirstie Alley and Ryan Thomas had a special bond while in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

And it appears they have continued their friendship since leaving, as Kirstie has just gone and trolled Ryan about his brother Scott.

The former Corrie star took to Twitter to share a sweet picture of himself and Kirstie in the Diary Room.

Writing in the caption he revealed how much he missed living with her as he wrote: ‘life’s no fun without you in it, miss you @kirstiealley’

However, not stopping to coo over his comment, the 67-year-old saw it as the perfect opportunity to troll her former housemate, and let’s just say, she did it in true Kirstie fashion.

Writing back to her buddy she quipped: ‘Hell man, with Brothers like yours you should never be without fun.. damn, I forgot to shag Scot!! Oh well I’ll be back soon..:) (sic)’

Ryan appeared to take it on the chin and laughed at the actress by saying: ‘this is too funny babe love you xx’

His younger brother Scott also joined in on the banter and clapped back at Kirstie by asking her to ‘hurry back soon.’

Fans reveled in the drama, and laughed at the trio’s flirty messages.

One wrote: ‘Love this…..absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait to see Kirstie hanging with the Thomas boys!’

Another added: ‘This is too funny love her and love all u thomas brothers too (sic)’

She joked about forgetting to ‘shag’ his brother (Picture: Getty Images)

Someone else teased: ‘I actually don’t think she’s joking, will be the best night of your life and what a story to tell.’

This isn’t the only intimate conversation Kirstie has had with the brothers, as in the house Ryan asked her to look at his cock.

Well something like that.

During a task, Kirstie asked Ryan to turn his back while she got undressed.

On doing so, the eagle eyed actor spotted a golden cockerel statue and couldn’t resist the opportunity to get a little cheeky with his new pal.

Grabbing said cockerel, he asked: ‘Have you seen my giant cock here as well? I mean, it is actually a giant cock.’

A clearly confused Kirstie asked: ‘It’s what?!’

To which Ryan joked: ‘It’s a giant cock.’

Lewis G can’t believe that eggs are dairy in slow day in the Big Brother house

Big Brother housemates Lewis Gregory and Lewis Flanagan can’t agree on whether eggs are classed as dairy.

It must be a slow day in the Big Brother house if this was the topic up for debate.

Lewis F was hunting around in the kitchen for something to eat, and was frustrated that what he wanted to snack on contained egg white.

He moaned: ‘What’s the point of making meatless meat when you put fucking eggs in it?’

Lewis G was sat at the kitchen table and replied: ‘Don’t you like eggs?’

Lewis F replied: ‘I just don’t wanna eat them because it’s fucking dairy in it. In the egg.’

Lewis G looked confused and said: ‘No there’s not. I think you’re wrong. There’s no dairy in eggs.’

‘I’m fucking right,’ Lewis F said. ‘Any produce that comes from an animal is dairy.’

Lewis G is confused (Picture: Channel 5)
Lewis F classes eggs as a dairy product (Picture: Channel 5)

‘Nah there’s no dairy in eggs though,’ said Lewis G.

Eggs are generally considered by many as dairy, as they are an animal byproduct like milk, cheese, yoghurt and cream.

However dairy refers to products that contain or are made from milk, so eggs wouldn’t fall under this category.

In the upcoming episode, Anamelia Silva falls foul of the other housemates once again when she upsets Zoe and Lewis F.

It comes after her row with Kay Lovelle, who asked her to tone down her behaviour during a task.

Big Brother continues tonight at 10.15pm on Channel 5

Peter Dinklage admits he had ‘concerns’ about joining Game Of Thrones.

Dinklage plays Tyrion Lannister, the brother of Jaime and Cersei Lannister, in the hit HBO show.

He finished filming the final season back in July and on Monday night won the Emmy Award for supporting actor in a drama for the role.

The show has been a huge hit for all the actors involved, but Dinklage admitted that he wasn’t sure about joining Game Of Thrones in the first place.

Speaking backstage at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, he said: ‘I had concerns about this genre, I wasn’t familiar with the books or the complexity of Tyrion before this because unfortunately before this character, many times people my size weren’t interesting enough for me to be interested in doing it.

‘I had done it one or two times before and it sort of didn’t you know, grab me but they relieved my concerns very quickly.’

Since wrapping up on set, Peter said he found it hard to say goodbye to a character he ‘adored’.

Dinklage won an Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama series (Picture: Getty Images)

‘I had my last day on set in July, just over two months ago now and it was very sad.

‘This is not only a great TV show to be a part of, but it was an enormous family to be a part of.

‘I’m sure you’ve heard that before from actors but in this case I was far from home, I live in New York and we shot the show in Europe, so many times I had to stay there and couldn’t go home on the weekends and I really developed deep roots in the community of Ireland and some of the other countries we shot in.

‘It was definitely hard to say goodbye, because it wasn’t just saying goodbye to the show, I was saying goodbye to a life over there.’

Game Of Thrones season 8 is set to air in 2019.

Rita Ora has confirmed her new studio album Phoenix will be out later this year, after it was allegedly leaked online.

According to reports, her album release date was accidentally leaked earlier this week.

But it looks as though the bold move has sparked Rita to announce her album, as she has now confirmed that her new material will be dropping on 23 November.

While making the announcement, the 27-year-old took the opportunity to thank her fans for their support.

She said: ‘I’m so happy to release Phoenix. I’m really proud of this album and excited for everyone to hear what I’ve been working on. A huge thank you to everyone that’s been part of my musical journey with me.

‘Thank you for your patience and for listening.’

And Phoenix isn’t the only thing her fans can start looking forward to, as Rita will also be releasing her new single Let You Love Me, on 21 September.

A full track list is yet to be revealed however, Rita’s single Girls as well as her collaboration with Liam Payne on For You, will also be featuring on the album.

Despite the singer’s intimate bisexual anthem Girls, it is said that her new single will be just as personal, as the icon will be revealing her insecurities about being in a new relationship.

Earlier this year Rita spoke about the release, revealing that if it wasn’t out by the end of the years she’d ‘go mad.’

The singer said: ‘It’s definitely going to come out this year, and I say that because my journey’s been so up and down that if it’s not out this year, I will literally go mad.

‘I’ve just put out single after single after single.’

Rita had previously addressed her ‘rollercoaster of emotions’ since parting ways with her label Roc Nation.

She said: ‘I had a bit of an issue, publicly, with putting out music which got me really, really, kind of devastated, and I was really down, and then I was really angry, and then I was really frustrated, and then I was really happy that it was happening.

‘It was all these emotions, so my album is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions … I’m still crazy, like, I still love to go out and party.’

She added: ‘Everyone who knows me knows that I love to have a good time, but I wanted this album to also be [something] you could put on and vibe with your friends. There’s a lot of ups and downs, but I’m very, very proud of it.’

Kristin Davis has been getting nostalgic about all things Sex And The City. Well, almost all things.

Ahead of the 2018 Emmy Awards Kristin shared an Instagram photo of herself and her SATC co-stars at the awards show back in 2004.

In the picture Kristin is sat at a table with Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker, with two trophies on the table in front of them.

The caption read: ‘Emmy flashback – super happy memories and wishing joy to everyone tonight.

‘We are all so incredibly lucky to get to do what we do!’

However Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha in the sitcom, was not in the photo.

Kristin’s Instagram followers noted they were a woman down in the pic – although Kim was at the event pictured.

‘To post a photo with only 3 of you? No wonder @kimcattrall doesn’t want to make another movie with you all’ one follower wrote.

‘Oooohhh the shade!!!’ another commented.

‘WHERE IS KIM CATTRALL?!! So disappointed in you,’ a further comment read.

Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker famously fell out over Sex And The City (Picture: REX/Shutterstock)

However, one follower added: ‘Kim is living life and, it seems, over SATC. Fair play to Kim. All these comments criticising Kristen is just silly.’

Parker has since insisted that there is no feud between her and Kim.

It comes after Cattrall and Parker’s very public falling out in the wake of the death of Cattrall’s brother back in February.

After Sarah gave her condolences to her former co-star, it seemed as though the pair had squashed their feud over a possible sequel to the Sex And The City movie.

But Kim posted on Instagram: ‘I don’t need you love or support at this tragic time.’

She added: ‘You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your “nice girl” persona.’

Perrie Edwards might have returned from her romantic getaway with her beau Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last month.

But it appears the star has caught more of a tan while being back at home, than she did soaking up the sun’s rays in Greece.

The Little Mix star was snapped looking particularly bronzed as she headed out to catch up with her friend.

She appeared to be in high spirits as she beamed into the camera while wandering around Hale Village in Cheshire with her pal.

Her bright orange jumper glowed, as the the 25-year-old had seemingly tried to toned down the colour by matching it with a pair of blue jeans.

In the caption he wrote: ‘Clinging onto the last days of summer like…’

The pair have just spent the summer in Greece, and have shared a number of stunning snaps – making us all ridiculously jealous.

‘Hold my hand and I’ll go anywhere with you,’ she captioned the loved-up shot for her 8.2million followers.

While another saw the couple channel their inner ‘Barbie and Malibu Ken’ dolls as they enjoyed their stay at a luxury hotel.

On returning home, Perrie showed off her freckles In an Instagram pic, after the singer had caught the sun while away.

One fan responded: ‘Daily reminder that perrie edwards is the most beautiful woman alive.’

Current best

I’m just wondering what is the benchmark these days for the best graphics on a game? I still didn’t get around to watching the gameplay footage of Cyberpunk 2077 yet but for years it was Crysis, but I can’t imagine it’s still that today – not with 4K and HDR.

I feel like I’ve been treated to some real eye candy over the last week, what with playing Spider-Man and now Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and I’m only using a base model PlayStation 4 and on a 1080p monitor.

Without giving things away for anyone that hasn’t completed Spider-Man yet, the graphics near the end of the game were just wow moments in my opinion. They’d been good throughout the game but after playing it for many hours it really stood out at the finale.

Just started playing Shadow Of The Tomb Raider yesterday and I’m finding myself looking around constantly in awe of the art work on display. The scenery is fantastic. I often think to myself when I’m looking up at complicated ceiling structures and interiors and there’s been a great deal of effort put into things that most players probably won’t even look at.

Graphics aren’t a deal-breaker for me either. Gameplay is paramount but if the games I play have great graphics I certainly won’t complain about it.
Nick The Greek

Raiding fantasy

I’ve just got to the hidden city in Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and I can see what people mean about it all being a bit cultural insensitive. I’m not sure whether it is, or how anyone can define that one way or the other, but it is all a very odd idea. I can’t say anymore without spoilers but it made me realise that the whole idea of ‘tomb raiding’ is kind of odd and a bit problematic nowadays, if you stop to think about it.

It seems to me the whole Tomb Raider formula needs updating, or recontextualising, as I just don’t think it fits that well into the modern world. There must be another way to fit in platforming and puzzle-solving with desecrating ancient monuments.

I always thought the idea of going more survival horror and playing up the fantasy (in terms of monsters, dinosaurs, etc.) that was always in the original was the way to go but they’ve gone in the opposite direction recently. I mean, the T-Rex is the most memorably thing in Tomb Raider history and yet there’s nothing like it in any of the modern games.

Lessons learned

I think that’s a fair review of Destiny 2: Forsaken. It is expensive but unlike certain other Destiny expansions I don’t feel conned that I ended up paying for it. It is odd how the two games have seen almost exactly the same ups and downs, but I guess I can’t complain too much since I’ve stuck through it all twice now.

I assume this means we’ll start hearing rumours of Destiny 3 soon enough, although I imagine, like most sequels now, it’ll be planned for the next gen or at least cross-gen. I do wonder what Bungie feel they have learned from the last few years you though. That they can get away without adding too much content as long as the grind is fun? That people do actually want a proper story and characters? That you don’t have to do too much different for a sequel to be successful.

It’s hard to know how these sort of things are viewed from the other side. Do they just hear what they want to hear? Does the publisher interfere so much that they’re dissatisfied with the end product as well? I guess we’ll never know.

Preparing for competition

I presume GC are aware PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is receiving a graphical downgrade on Xbox One? I can only think it is a reaction to Blackout. Even though Blackout is more primitive looking, at least it runs smoothly. Too much of a coincidence this optimisation is happening now, but will it be too little too late?

PUBG has fallen from grace over its lack of technical improvements. It will be interesting to see what DICE can do with Battle Royale, because I’d put money on it looking graphically superior than both those games. Plus, Battlefield is known for larger maps.

Online nostalgia

Does anyone find Switch Online’s choice of providing NES games slightly odd? The Virtual Console has disappeared, so instead we get 20 random 8-bit games. The NES Mini is being manufactured again, which is one reason it can be seen as a strange move. In that light you can see why they’d hold back on SNES classics for now, but why even bother with providing Balloon Fight, Pro Wrestling, Tecmo Bowl…?

Is this just Nintendo being Nintendo or is there a perverse logic behind it that I’m not seeing? Personally, I’d love to see the SNES games that didn’t make it the Mini, but I think that’d be far too logical.
Owen Pile

GC: We think most people see it as odd. It makes a little more sense in terms of how nostalgic audiences in America and Japan are about the NES – whereas in Europe it’s seen as a more niche format – but the whole thing still makes little sense to us.

Super Ryman, bro

It’s funny how some game series just completely pass you by. I’ve just played Rayman Legends and absolutely adored it. The musical stages alone could easily be developed into a whole game and warranted several playthroughs each. I loved the movement of the characters with the parkour style wall running and speedy swimming being a particular joy.

It’s surprising this is the fifth mainline entry in the series though. Although I heard about Origins and Legends at the time of their release, I don’t remember hearing anything about the first one in the nineties. It must have completely passed me by. Was the original one actually up to Legends standards? I seem to remember seeing the third 3D one at some point but it not being any good.

Anyway, glad I finally got to jump in, Rayman is definitely a worthy challenger to Mario.
Ryan O’D

GC: The first one was pretty rubbish even at the time, and although the 3D games have their fans we’re not really amongst them. Origins was the first really good one.

Constructing a bargain

I’m not sure if it has been mentioned on these pages or not, but Smyths are selling off Lego Dimensions cheaply. The starter packs are £19.99, level packs are generally £7.49, and character packs are £3.75. I managed to pick up the starter pack, Sonic, Portal, Batman, Mission: Impossible, and Harry Potter level packs for around £50 all in.

When I was there I also pre-ordered Red Dead Redemption II, after one of the staff confirmed to me that they (the Colchester branch anyway) would be having a midnight release for the game. It is the first game I have pre-ordered since GTA V, which goes to show the faith I have in Rockstar!

Mountain trip

Been working through the new God Of War game and thought I would share some feelings. First off, this game is tough. I’m playing on normal and still die to two or three hits from basic enemies. I am persevering though and was able to defeat Ornstein and Smough, oops, wrong game but anyone that has played Dark Souls and God Of War will know what I mean.

I’ve been noticing the ‘borrowing’ from other games as I have progressed. I was in a fight last night that very closely resembled a titan fight from the Arkham games but if you are stealing things from games, at least steal from the best.

The game feels like a road movie in tone. The two protagonists start off hating each other but as they progress on their journey they learn about each other and grow closer and meet up with all sorts of whacky characters along the way. I’m the first to admit I was a bit put off by the new look and controls but, even though it is fairly difficult, I am loving the story and Kratos is finally more than a grumpy loner.

He is now a grumpy father, although if anyone played Ascension (no, just me?) they will know that he was actually grieved at having to kill one of the characters he considered a friend, thus beginning an evolutionary change of character.

Really excited about Luigi’s Mansion 3, as others have said the second one is an unsung classic. I wonder whether the story is going to link into Smash Bros. though? Would be great to have a Castlevania bonus level!

Eric Bana joins true crime TV show Dirty John with creepy fourth-wall breaking trailer

Eric Bana stars in the creepy first trailer for true crime podcast Dirty John.

Dirty John tells the story of a single mother who falls for a handsome and dashing man.

So far so romantic right? However he isn’t everything that he seems, as shown in the teaser trailer released by Bravo.

Breaking the fourth wall, it shows Bana in character talking to someone he has apparently fallen in love with.

John reels off romantic lines, but gets stuck when he says: ‘Every time we touch’.

Things start to get weird when he rehearses the phrase, like he’s practicing a speech, eventually deciding to change it to ‘Every time I put my arms around you’.

He continues: ‘Every time I put my arms around you I feel like I’m finally home. I just want to be wherever you are. Honestly, it scares me a little. Does it scare you?’

This trailer definitely does.

Dirty John is based on the true crime podcast from journalist Christopher Goffard which focuses on single mother Debra Newell, who falls for John. But he’s not what he seems to be, and everyone around them can see it except Debra.

It also stars Connie Britton as Newell, who actually got to meet the real-life Newell in her research for the role.

Dirty John the TV show aims to expand on the back story of the titular man.

Executive producer Richard Suckle teased: ‘When you can go down a certain rabbit hole [with the story]…you should go there because there’s a lot of things people don’t know about.’

Dirty John airs on Bravo in November.

Jessica Simpson has announced that she is expecting her third child with former footballer hubby Eric Johnson.

The pair already have son Ace Knute, aged five, and daughter Maxwell Drew, aged six and have revealed that they’re now expecting a baby girl.

In a strong of some adorable family snaps, the 38-year-old revealed the news to her 4.3million Instagram followers, and it sounds as though she couldn’t be happier.

Addressing her fans in the caption, she wrote: ‘SURPRISE…’

Before adding: ‘This little baby girl will make us a family of five. We couldn’t be happier to announce this precious blessing of life.’

Instagram Photo

Two of the photos showed a gender reveal, as in the first image her children can be seen holing up two large balloons as they beamed into the camera.

Jessica then quickly uploaded another picture, which had been taken seconds after the first, as it showed one of the balloon had burst letting off a number of smaller pink ones.

The mother-of-two then shared a snap that showed off her bump and captioned the picture: ‘My Baby Love.’

Fans were quick to comment on all three of her posts and congratulated both the star and her husband of four years on the news.

One wrote: ‘Congratulations Jessica!!! You look so beautiful! Hope you’re feeling great.’

Instagram Photo

Another added: ‘This seems to be a big girl year, Congratulations!!! It looks like you have two very excited older siblings!’

Someone else commented: ‘Huge congrats go the third addition to your family.’

Earlier this year she spoke to Us Weekly about being a mother and called it ‘the best opportunity.’

She said: ‘Being a mother is the best opportunity and challenge I’ve ever been blessed with in life.

‘Right now my kids are in this amazing stage where I’m really listening to them without judgment and they’re teaching me so much.’

She added: ‘These little innocent kids teach me so much about life.’

New The Witcher single-player spin-off is… a Gwent card game

Thronebreaker – the closest thing you’ll get to Witcher 4 for a while

CD Projekt Red has announced a final release date for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and its story-based companion Thronebreaker.

Soccer Football - Champions League - Manchester United Press Conference - Stade de Suisse, Bern, Switzerland - September 18, 2018 Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho during the press conference Action Images via Reuters/Matthew ChildsJose Mourinho rates Man Utd's chances of winning the Champions League

Ever since CD Projekt said they were in no hurry to make a Witcher 4 game speculation has been rampant that they might instead do a spin-off featuring Ciri or one of the other characters. Thronebreaker is not that game.

What it is instead is a single-player spin-off from Gwent, the collectable card game which is finally coming out of beta on October 23 on PC, and December 4 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The card game was already a part of The Witcher 3 but proved so popular that CD Projekt expanded it into its own separate game.

The official release will coincide with a new update called Homecoming, which will make the board three-dimensional and reduce the playing lanes from three to two. The new 3D graphics are obviously a big change but the alternations to the gameplay seem just as significant.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales will be released on the same dates and will feature a major 30-hour long campaign.

It was first announced last year and was originally intended to be just the single-player component of Gwent. But although it features the same basic gameplay it will now use all-new cards and ‘narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics’.

The story involves Meve, a ‘war-veteran queen’ of the northern realms Lyria and Rivia, as she deals with an impending Nilfgaardian invasion. Since Thronebreaker is being made by the same people behind The Witcher 3 the plot and lore will all be regarded as canon.

Although CD Projekt has hinted that there will be new, non-card game-related, Witcher games in the future their current focusing most of their efforts on Cyberpunk 2077. But since even that doesn’t have a release date yet it’s probably going to be a long time till we hear anything concrete.

Rebecca returns to Emmerdale
(Picture: ITV)

After months of being missing, Rebecca White has returned to Emmerdale in a state of fear and dishevelment but how did she escape and what has become of the nurse Mrs Sykes who was holding her hostage on behalf of Lachlan White?

Robert Sugden had started to try and accept the fact that Rebecca was dead and in order to try and help him, Aaron Dingle suggested they plant a tree for Seb’s mum beside Sarah’s grave. Robert was touched by this gesture and declared that Rebecca would always be part of the family – but his focus now had to be on bringing up Seb and making sure he knew who his mother was.

MORE: Emmerdale spoilers: Who is behind the mask at the mysterious masquerade ball?

But as the unit shared some solemn moments in remembrance of Rebecca, she emerged ghost-like wearing her white gown and covered in cuts and bruises. She staggered towards Robert, Aaron, Victoria and Seb with a look of bewilderment and exhaustion on her face and everyone shared a relieved hug as mother and son were reunited.

(Picture: ITV)

And naturally, everyone will want to know what happened while Rebecca was Lachlan’s prisoner and then held by Mrs Sykes. With Mrs Sykes nowhere to be seen, was Rebecca forced to kill her to get away? Or is she in hiding?

And with Lachlan incarcerated, can Rebecca’s evidence ensure he goes to prison for a very long time?

Mick is arrested in EastEnders
(Picture: BBC)

EastEnders has dropped more clues over who shot Stuart Highway as the villain’s plan to frame Mick Carter for the crime has added more weight to the theory that he injured himself with the intention of bringing Mick down.

Previously, Stuart has goaded Mick into punching him and then more recently, deliberately wound him up into beating him to within an inch of his life. It seems to be very much in character for Stuart to want Mick to hurt him badly and so fans have long suspected that he is twisted enough to shoot himself just to bring Mick down.

Having awoken from his coma, Stuart wasted no time in telling the police that Mick pulled the trigger despite Mick and the Carters being completely adamant that he is innocent. And now that Mick has been arrested, he will then end up in prison where he faces a fight for survival.

This is exactly what Stuart wants, given that he bears a grudge against Mick for his time spent covering for him in youth offenders. And tonight, Tina echoed the thoughts of many fans as she stated that it was almost like Stuart had planned this outcome from the start.

We wouldn’t put it past him – and Mick’s nightmare is only just beginning.

BBC hit drama Bodyguard goes worldwide as it gets picked up by Netflix

Bodyguard is going global (Picture: BBC)

The BBC’s hit political drama Bodyguard is going worldwide.

Bodyguard, written and created by Jed Mercurio, stars Richard Madden as protection officer David, who is assigned to protect ambitious Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes.

The series is set to launch internationally on the streaming platform once the current run on BBC One has come to an end, say Variety.

Bodyguard has become the biggest new drama of 2018 so far since it launched last month.

Episode five fetched 1 million more viewers than the previous episode, with an average overnight rating of 8 million viewers and a peak audience of 8.3million.

Recently Mercurio shut down talk of a second series, in response to a story claiming he had ‘some ideas’ for another outing.

Taking to Twitter in response to the piece, headlined ‘Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio reveals plans for second series of BBC smash hit’, he remarked: ‘The accuracy of this headline would be markedly improved by inserting the word “doesn’t” before “reveals” (and removing the s).’

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Mercurio explained how it’s yet to be decided whether the show will be picked up for a second series – despite the show’s crazy success.

Asked if the Bodyguard will get a second series, Jed said: ‘I really don’t know.

‘The approach to it was definitely that we would just focus on this series and if we’re fortunate enough it’s successful and the BBC wants to do more, and we can find a way of setting up production, then yes definitely I’d be open to the idea.

‘But there’s been absolutely no discussion about a second series yet, there’s certainly no plan to do a second series yet until we’ve had that conversation with the BBC.’

Bodyguard airs Sundays at 9pm on BBC One

Sesame Street say Bert and Ernie ‘have no sexual orientation’ after writer claims they are gay

Muppets Bert, left, and Ernie, from the children's program "Sesame Street," are shown in New York. An online petition calling for the nuptials of Muppet flat-mates Bert and Ernie has sparked controversy. Chicago resident Lair Scott, who posted the petition, is seeking matrimony for the "Sesame Street" chums as a way to make gay and lesbian kids who watch the show feel better about themselves, and to promote tolerance for people who are different. Sesame Workshop, which produces the long-running children's series, declared in a statement, "They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves." (AP Photo/Beth A. Keiser, file)
Bert, left and Ernie are ‘best friends’, say Sesame Street (Picture: AP)

Sesame Street has said that characters Bert and Ernie are in fact ‘best friends’ and not gay as claimed by writer Eric Saltzman.

Saltzman said he based the two men on his own relationship with partner Arnold Glassman when it was his turn to write them into his songs.

But Sesame Street has released a statement claiming they have ‘no sexual orientation’.

In a statement, they said: ‘As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

‘Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.’

Saltzman told Queerty: ‘I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked “are Bert & Ernie lovers?” And that, coming from a preschooler was fun.

‘And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were.

‘I didn’t have any other way to contextualise them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie & I as “Bert & Ernie.”’

Sesame Street bosses have denied any relationship between the two characters, who debuted with the show in November 1960, in the past.

Justin Bieber and Hailey Bladwin fans thought the pair had tied the knot after rumours started to circulate they’d had a secret wedding.

Just last week, the couple were spotted walking into a courthouse together where marriage licenses are issued.

Speaking to People, a source claimed: ‘They went ahead and did it without listening to anyone.’

However, despite the speculation, Hailey has gone and squashed all of the rumours by revealing they haven’t actually said their vows yet.

Taking to Twitter, the 21-year-old wrote in a now deleted tweet: ‘I understand where the speculation is coming from, but I’m not married yet!’

Chatting to Glamour magazine, she revealed she has love ‘pouring from her soul’ for Justin and is finding it hard to ‘bottle it up’.

She said: ‘I go home, and my Mom says, “You are just so peaceful, I don’t think I have ever seen you this peaceful.”

‘It’s from the inside out — I am in love! That’s what happens. It’s pouring out of my soul — life is awesome!’

The fashion mogul then went on to joke: ‘I should just bottle it. Like sprinkle it like a fairy – I wish I had dust — The Hailey Dust! It would be a highlighter product, let’s be honest.’

Hailey might have denied claims that she has married the Baby singer, but her uncle Alec Baldwin seemingly thinks she is in fact Bieb’s wife.

The 30 Rock star has claimed Hailey and Justin did get married, although he admitted he doesn’t know ‘what the deal is’.

Speaking to Access, Alec said: ‘They just went off and got married and I don’t know what the deal is. We text Hailey every now and then.

‘We met him one time.’

Holby City spoilers: Professor Gaskell takes shocking action to silence Roxanna forever

Roxanna in hospital in Holby
(Picture: BBC)

Evil Professor Gaskell has carried out one of his most shocking and despicable acts to date in Holby City – as he deliberately left Roxanna trapped in her own mind and unable to speak or move by purposely botching her life saving surgery.

Roxanna had discovered the truth about Gaskell’s experimental trial – the original patient hadn’t been cured after all as Lazlo had never had motor neurone disease in the first place. As Gaskell wants to continue his operations, which have so far caused several deaths, Roxanna wanted to put a stop to it and ended up in the path of Meena’s car as she fled from a desperate Gaskell.

With a serious head injury, Roxanna was in the hands of Gaskell and viewers were taken to the past when she, Gaskell and Hanssen all first met each other. Determined to keep his secrets safe, Gaskell modified CCTV footage of the car park and then issued threats to Meena to keep her quiet.

How far would Gaskell go? (Picture: BBC)

He then focused on Roxanna herself and took despicable action that will destroy her life. He finished the operation and said he was going to cut a temporary ligature – but deliberately left it uncut. The result was that Roxanna was left like her mother had been – conscious, aware, but unable to communicate in any way.

Roxanna’s voice in her mind screamed desperately for Hanssen to hear her pleas but to no avail – she couldn’t warn him about Gaskell or reveal what he had done.

In some of Holby’s most disturbing scenes, Gaskell has sealed himself as a seriously sinister villain – but is there worse to come?

Adam remains on the run after taking the blame for his mum’s crime and the fact that her husband is guilty has at least helped Victoria a little bit to move on. But Matty has picked up that his mum and Cain have been hiding something significant from him.

Meanwhile, his feelings for Victoria remain confused following their recent kiss and Victoria challenges him to confront what is going on once and for all. After the pair have a heated exchange and tensions rise, they end up passionately kissing and are on the brink of giving a relationship a go.

However, when Moira walks in and sees them kissing, she is horrified, what action will she take to ensure that Matty doesn’t hook up with his brother’s wife?

Moira drops the bombshell on Victoria that it wasn’t Adam who killed Emma but her – and Victoria and Matty are left staggered.

But what will they do now – and could Moira be staring at a prison sentence after all?

Holby City review with spoilers: Gaskell silences Roxanna

How far would Gaskell go? (Picture: BBC)

Like the recent special episode focusing on male mental health, Holby City once again employed flashbacks to tell a rich and complex story about the bonds between doctors Roxanna Macmillan, Henrik Hanssen and John Gaskell.

The three of them had been students together in Boston in 1987. The era was evoked by the fashions and especially the music. It was completely appropriate, given Gaskell’s megalomaniac tendencies, that the first song we heard was ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World.’ His colleagues Hanssen and Roxanna were shown as no less ambitious, but for different reasons. In Roxanna’s case, her mother suffered from locked-in syndrome (being unable to communicate, but aware of everything going on around her). Roxanna wanted to find a cure, and she was so brilliant she was well on her way to achieving it.

young Gaskell Roxanna Holby-5476
Roxanna has her eye on Gaskell (Picture: BBC)

The younger selves of the three doctors were played by Harley Viveash as Hanssen, Michael Winder as Gaskell and Isabella Marshall as Roxanna. Viveash had Hanssen’s mannerisms, bearing and speech patterns down perfectly (so much so that it was strange to see Hanssen smoking in this junior version), Winder was good with a slightly more Liverpool-sounding Gaskell, and Marshall had all of Roxanna’s earnestness and drive.

We saw the aftermath of Hanssen attempting suicide by drowning: ‘My mother did it. When I was a child she walked into a lake and drowned herself. It’s in the blood.’ He was rescued by Gaskell and they made a pact not to speak of it to anyone else, including Roxanna. Hanssen also confided to Gaskell that on a recent trip back to Sweden he’d discovered he was about to become a father. He’d hoped that if he wasn’t around to ‘mess the boy up,’ the child might have a chance. Knowing what we know now about how Fredrik turned out, this was doubly tragic.

This intense moment led to Gaskell feeling dangerously exposed. In voice-over we heard him say that he couldn’t accept intimacy and had to ‘empty myself of everything but ruthless ambition.’ We also saw that he stole some of Roxanna’s research, and his entire career has been founded on her ideas.

All of this was interspersed with events in the present day, immediately after Meena’s car ran Roxanna over in the car park. Roxanna had a serious head injury, and viewers will have been as alarmed as Hanssen was to see Gaskell preparing to operate on her.

Meena Holby-3285
Meena blamed herself (Picture: BBC)

Meena had a voicemail message from Roxanna, telling her that she’d found something out. Zav said she should take it to Hanssen, but Meena wanted him to play it to the Professor instead. Meanwhile, Hanssen had found some pieces of equipment in Roxanna’s desk that led him to the lab where she’d tested Lazlo. He couldn’t piece together what it might mean.

Gaskell had bumped into Lazlo himself, and realised Roxanna was on to him. He managed to shut down Zav and Meena by subtly threatening them with dire consequences if they said anything to anybody, and he made sure that the hospital’s CCTV didn’t show that Roxanna ran in front of Meena’s car because she was running away from him. There was now only one person who could get him into trouble.

Roxanna Holby-9f04
A terrifying outcome for Roxanna (Picture: BBC)

He took Roxanna back into theatre. He finished the operation and said he was going to cut a temporary ligature – but deliberately left it uncut. The result was that Roxanna was left like her mother had been – conscious, aware, but unable to communicate in any way. We heard her, inside her head, desperately calling out to Hanssen, and we saw (in Roxanna’s mind) the 1987 version of her, running round a deserted library, sadly and desperately calling Henrik’s name. It was a disturbing and emotional ending that brought tears to my eyes.

Sue Haasler is the author of the official Holby City book, which you can read about here. She also writes novels and there’s more about her latest here.
