Extinction risk

I would like to write in about a subject I never thought would ever be an issue: the death of the first person shooter. Like anything that’s super popular there’s got to be a downside to everything but when you look at how big this concept was in the Xbox 360 era and how it is now it almost seems like a niche. There is Call Of Duty, and to a degree Battlefield, and Fortnite is third person but still kind of similar. But it’s undeniable that there are few fewer of the games than there ever used to be.

I think there are two key reasons why, the first being the decline of single-player games. They may not be as dead as EA once claimed but most of the big new ones are third person action adventures and role-players. Now combine this with the fact that it’s becoming harder and harder to make a new big name multiplayer game. Used to be that every man and his dog was constantly trying but lately most companies have realised it’s too costly and have just stuck to their guaranteed sellers.

It’s not good for any genre to dominate for too long but I hope that there is a renaissance for first person shooters soon. If this year’s Call Of Duty has a story campaign that will be a good sign, but I’d also like to see EA revitalise Battlefield/front and other big companies like Ubisoft give it a go again. More importantly I’d like to see indies try because they’re always a friend to niche franchise and they may not realise how much the good old FPS needs their help.

Only new

I would be totally happy with a new Onimusha. I will probably be getting the remaster, as a show of support if nothing else, and would definitely be interested in a big budget sequel. Especially if it looks as good as Resident Evil 2.

I do agree with the letter a few days ago though, that said that the lack of new IP this generation has been shameful. It’s never good, to be honest, but the complete lack of effort by some publishers is shocking and I can’t even pretend I’m sorry that they’re being made to pay for it by lowering sales of big franchises.

If I was a big publisher I would set-up a separate label and just pump out new IP through that. Just like movie studios do with things like Fox Searchlight (to be shut down by Disney now, no doubt). They kind of do that with indie games, but they’re always small budget affairs made by someone else. I’d much rather see EA and Activision themselves experiment, it doesn’t have to be mega budget but at least pretend like you’re interested in moving the industry forward.

Personality goes a long way

Nice feature at the weekend about Tomb Raider. I find the trilogy hard to really assess myself as though it seemed to do a lot right, and I remember really liking the reboot, in the end it all seems to amount to very little. I thought the final game was perfectly fine and yet I remember almost nothing about it except the weird plot stuff in the hidden city and finding some kid’s lost dice.

They’re good games, well made, with good graphics and better gameplay than Uncharted. But in terms of personality there’s just nothing there. They’re essentially the opposite of Uncharted and it’s interesting which seems the most memorable and ‘fun’.

A lot of people bring up Lara having no personality and the stories taking themselves too seriously, and I think that’s definitely true. I also think it’s on purpose and they were trying to do be the anti-Uncharted. Like the DCEU to the Marvel cinematic universe.

But it hasn’t really worked and I think they’ll only be really successful again when they embrace what the games used to be and the fact that it’s impossible to take it all completely serious. I don’t want Lara the murder machine I want Lara the… likeable person who enjoys her life. Is that such a bad idea?

Hard to find

Would just like to say thank you to GC for your continued coverage of PlayStation VR, something which most websites seem to all but ignore, apparently because they don’t get many hits. I seem to remember you saying they did okay for you so I’m relieved. Not only would I never have been inspired to buy a headset if it wasn’t for the enthusiasm on the Inbox but I would never have known about games like Astro Bot, Thumper, Beat Saber, and Moss if it were not for GC’s reviews.

I’d say Sony’s marketing for them has been terrible but just their marketing for digital games in general seems really poor. It used to be that they would actively promote indie games and lesser known titles but now the PlayStation Store is just the big name games and nothing else. Stuff you always already know about and don’t need any reminding about.

It’s basically turned into the App Store where it’s impossible to come across anything good by accident and is only useful if you already know exactly what to search for. I know it’s a difficult problem but Sony (I wouldn’t know about Microsoft) are getting worse at it and not better. I don’t need reminding that Call Of Duty is out, I do need to know that Astro Bot is one of the best games I’ve ever played.
Geoffrely
PS: Any new reviews coming up soon?

GC: Our next one will probably be Fisherman’s Tales, which is absolutely not what it sounds like. (Assuming you think it sounds like a fishing game.)

Good enough

I do agree that the Switch hardware design is going to end up looking extra prophetic once streaming comes in, I never really thought of it like that. But I also agree that as soon as streaming becomes a thing and everyone starts doing it on mobiles (which I’m sure they will) touchscreen controls are going to completely take over.

That doom was sealed the minute that Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds were proved to work on mobiles and since that’s good enough they’ll absolutely focus on that and joypads will just be a niche extra only used by the hardcore.

It pains me to think about it, and how inevitable it all is, but now the genie’s out of the bottle there’s no going back. ‘Good enough’ is, after all, the motto of every publisher who only cares enough about the quality of their game that it doesn’t negatively affect sales or profits. Cynical? I’d say realistic.

Fantasy football

Randomly today at work, I was reminiscing about the days of Sensible Soccer and then International Superstar Soccer when I had an idea.

Konami should just forget about chasing licenses and competing with FIFA and offer an alternative experience instead.

I’ve always enjoyed their football games more than EA’s so what if they ditched real-life teams completely. Take a leaf out of Sensible Soccer’s book and have teams like ‘Pizza Toppings’ and ‘Toolbox FC’. The players don’t even need to be in football kits, they could be a team full of ninjas or zombies.

Deliver the fantastic football game experience with a difference and hilarity like Sensible Soccer once did.
I bet it would sell better than another game trying to better FIFA and they wouldn’t need to fork out any money for licensing. Just a thought!
FatysHenrys

Limited use

Onimusha already would have taken the face likeness aspect into account. The main character is the likeness of Takeshi Taneshiro. Whether Jean Reno objects to his likeness being used again would probably depend on the wording of their contracts.
Obakasama

GC: It is an interesting point because, as you imply, every contract is likely to be different and it’s easy to imagine actors’ faces being removed from games they were previously in. Something similar already happens with sports games that have to pay a licence to feature real sportspeople.

Under the radar

I noticed you haven’t published a news story on the new gameplay trailer released for Outward and I haven’t seen it on any other sites so I thought I would write in. I hadn’t really seen anything of this game but I am quite impressed with the new trailer as it looks a great action role-playing game with really nice graphics and the gameplay looks a lot of fun. It is releasing on 26 March 2019 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC which seems crazy with all the other games launching over the next few months!

The developers say that rather than playing as a hero with crazy supernatural powers you will be playing as a normal human being and be much more vulnerable. There also is some survival elements to it so you have to eat, drink, and sleep regularly. Depending on how intricate they make the survival aspects that could be a deal breaker for me, as I don’t really like those mechanics, but if it’s fairly light I don’t mind it too much.

It has a fairly standard fantasy type setting typical of most role-playing games but it looks really good and the creatures look interesting with a Fable-esque art style to it that I like the look of. It also has two-player split-screen and online co-op, which is rare in an action role-player and could be a lot of fun with a friend.

I thought it deserves a shout out so it doesn’t pass by unnoticed.

Inbox also-rans

The Pinkerton company in Red Dead and all the movies is still around? Wow, that is not something I would’ve expected. Although I guess things like Lloyds of London are much older. Still weird though.
Mikey

If certain Lego games are removed from digital stores due to licensing would it not make sense to let the public know so they could sell as many as possible before they were removed?
Walleroo

GC: Next thing you’ll be suggesting is that publishers pick sensible release dates that don’t conflict with each other.

This week’s Hot Topic

The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Rooster, who asks what’s your most annoying video game pet peeve?

What’s the one thing that always frustrates you no matter how good the rest of the game is? It can be anything from an overfamiliar level setting (sewers, ice worlds, etc.), to annoying gameplay concepts (time limits, boss battles), to cliched story points and characters (rescue the princess or save New York). What do you find so irritating about them and what’s the worst example you can think of?

Have any of these problems completely ruined a game for you, or put you off buying it? Was the problem fixed with a patch or in a sequel or did you just have to try and put up with it?

Rockstar Games accused of being ‘misleading’ as real-life Pinkertons respond to Red Dead Redemption II lawsuit complaint

Red Dead Redemption II - could it be getting a VR mode?

Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations has responded to Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive’s contention in their lawsuit over Red Dead Redemption 2, claiming the company is being ‘misleading’ in deeming the game historically accurate.

The company (now a subsidiary for security firm Securitas AB) previously sent publisher Take-Two Interactive a cease-and-desist letter over the portrayal of Pinkerton agents Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross – the game’s antagonists.

After claiming the depiction of Pinkerton would ‘tarnish’ the brand, demanding a lump sum in compensation, Rockstar and Take-Two went on the defensive – stating Red Dead 2’s references to Pinkerton ‘accurately portrays the historical Nineteenth Century American Landscape’.

The Pinkerton agents are the game’s antagonist (Picture: Rockstar)

In a lengthy statement issued to Metro GameCentral, Pinkerton have branded these claims as ‘misleading’, claiming ‘history tells a different story’ from those depicted in-game.

Pinkerton President, Jack Zahran, said: ‘We commend the makers of the game for creating a truly beautiful depiction of the Old West through their wildly successful and profitable product. However, to claim it as “historically accurate” is misleading.

‘One cannot rewrite history to create profit in the present at the expense of real-life people who represent a brand today. In the game, Pinkertons are seen shooting horses, shooting guns and firebombs into buildings where women and children are present, and as violent villains in the community. History tells a different story.’

After giving a brief history of founder Allan Pinkerton who created the agency in 1850, the company also claim employees are having to explain to their sons and daughters why Red Dead Redemption II paints the Pinkertons as the bad guys.

Zahran adds: ‘Among our employees are fathers and mothers who now have to explain to their young game players why Red Dead Redemption II encourages people to murder Pinkertons.

‘Presenting an alternative and baseless image of Pinkerton is not only inaccurate, but detrimental to our brand and the services we provide to clients worldwide.’

You can check out the full statement from Pinkerton’s president below.

Pinkerton statement from president Jack Zahran

‘Over the last 24 hours, there has been much attention drawn to Pinkerton’s inclusion in the Red Dead Redemption II video game. While we have been contacted on numerous occasions for permission to reference or authenticate our historic brand, we were not contacted by the developer of this game to ensure the accuracy of how Pinkertons were depicted. Had we been contacted, we would have worked with the developer to create a historically accurate portrayal of the brand without compromising the compelling and engaging game play.

‘We have a responsibility to our team, our clients and our history to protect our 167-year-old brand and reputation. We are prepared to do so, but hope that our two companies can come to an amicable solution to this issue. Should this result in recompence, Pinkerton will accelerate the community, workplace, and school violence prevention and awareness programs to which we already allocate significant resources.

‘We commend the makers of the game for creating a truly beautiful depiction of the Old West through their wildly successful and profitable product. However, to claim it as ‘historically accurate’ is misleading.

‘One cannot rewrite history to create profit in the present at the expense of real-life people who represent a brand today. In the game, Pinkertons are seen shooting horses, shooting guns and firebombs into buildings where women and children are present, and as violent villains in the community. History tells a different story. Allan Pinkerton was a visionary businessman who created the country’s first detective agency in 1850. The logo he created features an eye, leading to the term “Private Eye,” which is a part of American lexicon today. After working as President Lincoln’s security detail and thwarting the first attempt on Lincoln’s life, the agency became the inspiration behind the creation of the Secret Service

‘Allan Pinkerton was also an abolitionist who worked on the Underground Railroad. He hired the first African-American Intelligence Agent. He also hired the first female detective, Kate Warne. Pinkertons were called on to protect the Pony Express, the railroads as they were being built, and many other American entities that created the backbone of the Industrial Revolution.

‘Pinkerton currently employs thousands of professionals around the world who provide comprehensive risk management services that prevent instances of crime and violence. Among our employees are fathers and mothers who now have to explain to their young game players why Red Dead Redemption II encourages people to murder Pinkertons. Presenting an alternative and baseless image of Pinkerton is not only inaccurate, but detrimental to our brand and the services we provide to our clients worldwide.’

They have decided to give long-distance romance a try, after striking up an instant connection in Silent Witness last season.

But Dr Nikki Alexander and Matt Garcia could be facing a major anchor to the UK after the pathologist is seen taking a pregnancy test in a teaser for next week’s episode.

Fans of the BBC One show were convinced that the test would be positive as the plot twist hinted that she had some ‘news she desperately wants to share with Matt’.

But Nikki will have to wait until her American politician beau comes back from America, and we’ll all have to wait until next Tuesday to see what she’s going to share.

Aside from the gritty pathological drama, this series promised to explore ‘the challenges of a long-distance relationship’ between two people who are committed to their jobs.

However, ahead of the series return last week, actress Emilia Fox said that her character Nikki gets ‘to smile a lot’ in the new series.

After falling for Michael Landes’s character Matt, viewers were convinced of Nikki’s pregnancy on Tuesday night, however many were still rooting for her happy ending with Jack Hodgson (played by David Caves.)

In a devastating twist, it looks like Jack’s life could be in danger when the teaser showed him falling victim to knife crime in London.

Producer Kiaran Murray-Smith has also remained tight-lipped about the future for leading lady Nikki.

He recently told RadioTimes.com that the show would try to bring real-life scenarios into their on-screen relationships.

He said: ‘Once you have relationships, like any drama you have to try and push a little bit more as to reality – and what happens in relationships.’

But then he added: ‘The pregnancy test in the teaser… whether or not – what happens after that, obviously I can’t say at the moment until that comes out!’

Ghostbusters 3 returns to the original universe for ‘the next chapter’ and Ivan Reitman’s son will direct

The son of original Ghostbusters’ director Ivan Reitman has inherited the movie franchise to make ‘the next chapter’.

Three decades after watching the films get made on set, Juno director Jason Reitman will get his hands on the films and make a third installment for Summer 2020, it was announced on Tuesday.

Ivan, 72, is keeping it in the family by passing on the reigns to his son, 41, but he will stay on to produce the action comedy 34 years after directing the original film.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jason revealed: ‘I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.

OG director Ivan Reitman (left) is passing on the torch to son Jason (right) (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

‘This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.’

The third film will be set in the same realm as the 1984 and 1989 films, starring Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis.

It’s clear that the all-female reboot, starring Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, will stay firmly in 2016.

Instead, the third film promises ‘wonderful surprises and new characters’ with no confirmation that any of the OG stars will make a comeback.

That said, Akroyd was the first star to let slip that a Ghostbusters 3 was in the works back in November, when he confirmed that he’d read the story and it was ‘so good’.

Jason left his father Ivan in tears with the ’emotional and funny’ idea for his third film when he first approached the Ghostbusters filmmaker with the storyline.

Back in the mid-Eighties, comedy characters Stantz, Venkman and Zeddemore forged the ultimate ghost protection service in a blockbuster that raked in over $300 million (£217m) in worldwide box office revenue.

Five years later, it gave birth to a successful sequel and Akroyd has teased that ‘there is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters’ in the new script.

Filming for a new chapter, set in the present day, is expected to take place in the next few months and Sony promises the release of Ghostbusters 3 in summer 2020.

They’re already a family of Sixx, but rocker Nikki and his wife Courtney are reportedly about to become seven amid claims they’re expecting their first child.

Radar reports that former model Courtney, 33, ‘is several months along’ with the Mötley Crüe musician’s fifth child and the 60-year-old is said to be ‘ecstatic’.

Nikki has daughter Frankie-Jean, 18, with second wife Donna D’Errico, as well as Gunner, 27, Storm, 24, and Decker, 23, with ex-wife Brandi Brandt, however, this would be his first with third wife Courtney.

A source told the publication: ‘[Nikki] is such a great father already, and she is going to be the best mom. She is so caring.’

Fans began speculating that Courtney was expecting when a picture appearing to show her secret baby bump was swiftly deleted from Instagram on Monday.

The couple has yet to confirm the news, though Metro.co.uk has contacted a representative for comment.

Bassist Nikki met his third wife back in 2010, three years after separating from D’Errico and shortly after the demise of his relationship with Kat Von D.

He proposed to Courtney in November 2012 during a romantic trip to St Barts and they married 18 months later at Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills.

They were already planning to have their first child four months after the wedding and said they wanted to start trying as soon as the Motley Crue tour was completed in July 2014.

Nikki said at the time: ‘When the [current MÖTLEY CRÜE] tour is over, we intend to have a little rocker of our own! I am so excited to have my first baby with the love of my life.’

Paris Jackson checks herself into treatment facility for the sake of her physical and emotional wellbeing

Paris Jackson is seeking professional help for her mental health.

The 20-year-old daughter of the late king of pop recently checked into a treatment centre to improve her ’emotional and physical wellbeing’ after a busy year, it was revealed on Tuesday night.

Paris has previously spoken out about her teenage battle with depression and anxiety which led to her hospitalisation in 2013, but she slammed claims she was ‘heading back to rehab’ in late 2018.

A source told Metro.co.uk: ‘After a busy year of work engagements that took her all over the globe, Paris decided that she needed to take some time off to reboot, realign and prioritize her physical and emotional health.

‘She checked herself into a treatment facility to aid in her wellness plan and is looking forward to coming out of this revitalized and ready to tackle the exciting new projects that await her.’

Michael Jackson’s daughter was dogged by claims that Demi Lovato’s July 2018 near-fatal overdose was a ‘big trigger’ for her to address her own wellbeing.

At the time, she denied it, insisting: ‘I haven’t gone back to rehab, or any clinic. Idk who decided to make this bullshit up for clickbait but it’s annoying!

‘I don’t need a celebrity’s misfortune to make me healthy. I’ve had enough friends OD to send me that message.’

Paris similarly denounced claims that she was heading for a mental breakdown later in November, and slammed ‘disgusting’ reports that her alleged drug use had given her family ’cause for concern’.

As a teenager, Paris attended a residential therapy program after breaking the hospital’s ‘three-strike’ attempted suicide rule by the age of 15.

And three years later, aged 18, the pop offspring explained to Rolling Stone why she tried to kill herself by slashing her wrist and taking 20 Motrin pills.

‘It was just self-hatred,’ she said. ‘Low self-esteem, thinking that I couldn’t do anything right, not thinking I was worthy of living anymore.’

She said her junior year at therapeutic school in Utah was ‘great for her’ and made her ‘a completely different person.’

Paris said: ‘I was crazy. I was actually crazy. I was going through a lot of, like, teen angst. And I was also dealing with my depression and my anxiety without any help.’

After signing to IMG models in 2017, Paris appeared to end 2018 on a high, fronting Tings magazine which was her last published post on Instagram in mid-December.

In a non-stop year, Paris appeared on the cover of Singapore’s Harper’s Bazaar, Narcisse magazine and Vogue Brazil, as well as making her acting debut in Gringo, alongside Charlize Theron.

Who is Hueningkai, the newest member announced for boy band TXT?

$
0

The line-up for new boyband TXT just got even bigger with the announcement of its newest member.

Music label Bighit revealed the name of the new group and its first member Yeonjun last Thursday, with TXT standing for Tomorrow X Together.

The group is being made up of promising young singers with the hope of emulating the same success of the label’s other boy group BTS, who have become a global phenomenon.

The second member of the group, Soobin, was revealed on Sunday, and now they have another new member, Hueningkai, to add to their ranks – with his details being released on Tuesday.

Here’s what we know about him so far.

Who is Hueningkai?

Hueningkai
Hueningkai has joined the band (Picture: Big Hit)

So far TXT has been made up of young talent who most k-pop fans wouldn’t have heard of before.

The introduction videos released by Big Hit are the first glimpses that we have been given into who the new singers are.

We don’t know that much about Hueningkai yet, although his introductory video sees him tucking into bags of snacks in a convenience store.

He seems to be a fan of bright colours too, wearing a yellow puffa jacket and matching hoodie.

And if the video is anything to go by he loves flowers, making a floral crown for a dog – while a new photo released of the newest band member shows him holding a bunch of tulips.

According to reports Hueningkai is the maknae of TXT and was born in 2002 – which would make him the youngest band member so far after 19-year-old Yeonjun and 18-year-old Soobin.

What we know about the group so far

One of the few small hints we have as to what the band might sound like is the background music in Yeonjun’s and Soobin’s introduction videos, although they do both sound quite different to each other.

In a statement Big Hit said: ‘TOMORROW X TOGETHER is a bright and youthful boyband where each member is different from one another, shining in their own way to create a synergy.

‘Just as how their name suggests, the different members have all come together under one dream in hopes of building a new tomorrow.’

Korean pop culture news website Soompi cites ‘multiple industry sources’ as claiming that the group has five members with an average age of 17.

Fans can find a countdown on the TXT website which shows how long until the next member is announced.

Who are Big Hit?

Big Hit is the South Korean record label which currently manages BTS, so it would be fair to say that Big Hit are doing pretty well for themselves.

If somehow you’ve landed on this article without already knowing, BTS are a seven-strong K-pop group who are currently enjoying what you might call world domination.

Demi Lovato was overjoyed to act as a bridesmaid for ‘sister’ Jenna Schubart at ‘the perfect wedding’ on Sunday.

The 26-year-old singer-and-actress posted a sweet tribute to ‘the perfect couple’ after stepping up for her friend of 23 years in Clermont, Florida.

The Sorry Not Sorry hitmaker made a gorgeous gothic bridesmaid wearing a black long-sleeved crochet dress in two selfies posted on Monday.

She captioned the photos: ‘I was a bridesmaid yesterday for my sister / former babysitter/friend of 23 years. I love you @jennaschubart. What a perfect wedding for a perfect couple!! (sic)’

Demi’s all-black dress matched her raven hair, which was wavey around her shoulders, while a dramatic smokey-eye and baby pink lips set off the look.

The Camp Rok’ actress surrounded herself with family and close friends at the glitzy bash, and shared a video of her mother, Dianna Hart, laughing and dancing at the wedding reception.

She also posed with her younger sister, Desperate Housewives actress Madison De La Garza, 17, for a cute picture captioned ‘Baby sis.’

Demi – who was hospitalised following a drug overdose last July – has also been using her social media to joke about her new-found sobriety, and delighted her fans when a post on an Instagram account caught her eye.

The meme showed a group of friends toasting around the table, with one of the women holding an imaginary glass, and had a message printed above which read: ‘When you’re all about that new sober life but still tryna hold onto your old ideas.(sic)’

Jeremy Clarkson brands Brexit a ‘complete clusterf**k’ so we looked up the exact definition

Jeremy Clarkson has called the UK’s leave process a ‘complete clusterfuck’.

The opinionated TV star pulled no punches as he commented on news that Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal was roundly rejected by MPs on Tuesday.

Clarkson and his Grand Tour companions James May and Richard Hammond discussed the faltering leave process at a screening for the new series of The Grand Tour after Theresa May failed to save her plan for a Brexit deal.

The 58-year-old told Press Association: ‘It’s a complete clusterfuck. It’s exactly (and I don’t like to speak for my colleagues) what we predicted 18 months ago.’

The military term, dating back to the Vietnam War, is officially taken to mean: ‘Those debacles and disasters caused by a deadly brew of illusion, impatience, and incompetence that afflicts too many decision-makers, especially those in powerful, confident, and prestigious groups.’

So yeah, sounds about right.

Parliament voted May’s plan down by 432 to 202 votes, and Clarkson cast doubt on the PM’s capacity to come up with a plan B in the next few days.

Jeremy, May and Hammond spoke about the current political situation at a screening for their show this week (Picture: Amazon)

He said: ‘If someone said: “Richard Hammond, you are going to present Britain’s Heaviest Sheepdog, you’ve got three days” you wouldn’t be able to.’

James May has backed a second referendum, after revealing he had a £5,000 bet on outcome of the Brexit process.

He said: ‘I’ll put my cards on the table and say I’m an absolute second referendum man, it’s the third one anyway because there was one in 1975.

‘People vote again regularly on other things, they can vote again on this.’

During the screening, the trio was also looking ahead to the future of their Amazon Prime show The Grand Tour.

Clarkson has teased that the show will go on for many seasons yet, potentially looking beyond season five.

The presenters kick off the third season later this week, with a season four follow-up already in the pipeline, featuring a new format without the live studio element.

The Grand Tour sees the trio journey to Georgia, China and Mongolia, among other exotic locations. It is due to air on Amazon Prime on January 18.

Dancing On Ice viewers call for ‘unprofessional’ Gemma Collins to be axed over diva claims

Gemma Collins was thought to be ‘threatening to quit’ Dancing On Ice after being called out for her diva behaviour backstage.

And viewers have now turned on the Towie star, begging bosses for her to be sacked from the show ahead of her second performance.

After Holly Willoughby slated the 37-year-old left before the end of Sunday night’s show, and reports claimed she had asked a camera crew to leave so she could rehearse, it seems fans have had enough of the GC.

Flocking to Twitter, one unimpressed follower posted: ‘Gemma Collins wimped off from the Jungle, left her date on Celebs Go Dating on the station, poor bloke and is now totally disrespectful of Dancing on Ice – she’s not a diva – not even a celeb – dump her and let someone more deserving on the show – she’s so RUDE!!!!’

‘So you made time to promote your clothes, but anything important at the end of the show you go home because you were BORED!! can clearly see where your priorities lie,’ another said; while many more branded her ‘unprofessional’.

However, others rushed to support the reality star, begging her to stay put.

‘@missgemcollins DONT you dare quit @dancingonice. No one does a hair flick like GC. Stand strong and show them they’re wrong,’ a fan urged.

While a Twitter user joked: ‘Gemma Collins going missing on set of Dancing on Ice because she was “bored and wanted to go home” is a massive mood.’

It all came to a head on Monday, as Holly and Phillip Schofield took a moment to dissect the previous night’s instalment of Dancing On Ice during a segment on This Morning, along with last year’s star, Kem Cetinay.

And the mum-of-three explained: ‘I really love Gemma, I’m a big fan of Gemma’s and I think she’s great on the show.

‘But, I think there needs to be a little bit of professionalism that comes into any work you do. Just a little pride in your work. You just shouldn’t do that.’

Explaining her early departure from the live episode, Love Island’s Kem relayed a message from the GC, which stated: ‘She was a bit bored but she does love skating.’

Gemma was ‘left upset’ and ‘threatened to quit’ after Holly’s comments (Picture: WireImage)

But Holly fumed over the explanation, adding: ‘That’s absolute rubbish. That’s just a really good excuse to get out of stuff you don’t want to do.

‘I love that side of her but I think professionalism will always outweigh that diva behaviour. Naughty Gemma.’

Gem was reportedly left upset by the comments, and promptly threatened to quit the show.

‘Gemma’s a nightmare but is getting away with it because producers know she’s the biggest draw,’ an insider told The Sun. ‘On the first show she told an exec she was the star so shouldn’t have to be in group performances or stand on the balcony to watch the others.

‘She’s devastated by everything that’s been said about her and is threatening to quit.

‘She’s feeling there’s a conspiracy to bring down their biggest star.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Gemma Collins and ITV for a comment.

Dancing On Ice continues on Sundays, at 6pm, on ITV.

PewDiePie’s subscribers up 700% following T-Series fight but rival channel is still hot on his heels

PewDiePie definitely won the war when it comes to subscriber count (Picture: PA Archive)

It’s no secret PewDiePie won the fight against rival channel T-Series, after a massive online campaign to earn him a larger lead in subscribers took full hold in the latter half of 2018.

Now we know, however, just how massive a leap in subscribers Pewds – real name Felix Kjellberg – really got, jumping from around 67 million to over 80 million.

According to pundits who have a real interest in crunching those numbers, it’s been suggested the popular vlogger has had his subscriber count jump up 700 percent. Which is, well, it’s quite impressive.

He has quite the loyal fanbase (Picture: YouTube)

Business Insider had a deep dive into his monthly subscriber leap, as SocialBlade updated all those interested with a live steam of the count as it went up and down, and in December alone, 6.62 million people subscribed to PewDiePie.

When compared to the 885,000 growth he had in September – which was right on the cusp of the war – it showed the massive acceleration in numbers.

Pewds was able to achieve such a massive growth through a swath of swaggery online campaigns from his loyal fans.

While the gap between the two was as close as 16,000 subscribers at one point, a campaign was launched for the gamer to keep him on top, as fellow YouTubers Mr Beast, Markiplier, Justin Roberts and Logan Paul got involved.

They even bought a flippin’ billboard in Times Square, as Team 10 member Justin put his money where his love is.

However, the Indian music company’s page is still hot on the heels of PewDiePie – so perhaps the fight will reignite before we know it, with Pewds sitting on 81million subscribers at current count; T-Series is on 80.6million.

The man has definitely used his immense online power for good, though, as earlier this week he saved Jesus H Christ. Literally, saved. No dramatics about it.

The man with the religious namesake rose to online prominence in 2017 when he was banned from website Fiverr (a site where users pay for creative content).

After Pewds initially got the guy a massive following online back then by calling his plight, now he encouraged his followers to donate thousands to the father in his custody fight.

This is why we can sometimes have nice things.

Chris and Katherine announced their engagement this week (Picture: BACKGRID)

Chris Pratt may have proposed to Katherine Schwarzenegger this week after seven months of dating, but we’ve just been reminded she had her eye on him some time before they even met.

A year before, if you’re after specifics.

The couple were first linked in June last year, after being set up by her mother Maria Shriver.

While Chris had a bunch of loyal fans the world over and, as we can imagine, a lot of admirers and lovers-from-afar, little did we know Katherine was one of them.

In an unearthed video dredged up from the depths of the internet for the purposes of celebrating the happy couple’s engagement, blogger Katherine was seen chatting with Access Hollywood about who her favourite Chris was.

Asked to choose between Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth or Chris Evans, she immediately picked Evans before she just as quickly switched her answer to Pratt.

‘Chris Pratt’s been looking good lately,’ she smiled. ‘So, you never know.’

Instagram Photo

This was a whole year before the two became a couple, so it’s almost like she put that shiz out into the universe. The law of attraction is a thing, you know!

The delightful little walk down prediction lane came as Chris ex-wife Anna Faris has suggested she’d be up for officiating the wedding.

Revealing her former husband – the two finalised their divorce just three months ago – texted her the morning after he popped the question, Anna reminded him she was ordained.

‘Chris texted me this morning and he was like, “I proposed to Katherine last night.” And I was like, “Ahh, that’s amazing”,’ said Anna on the latest episode of her podcast.

‘And I texted him back like, “I just wanted to remind you I’m an ordained minister.” I’m so happy for them.’

Anna added of his romance with Katherine: ‘I knew that it was gonna happen and I love her and I love him and I’m just so happy that they found each other.’

The pair have one son, six-year-old Jack, and they share custody.

Dancing On Ice’s Vanessa Bauer rubbishes claims she made a dig at Megan Barton Hanson over Wes Nelson drama

Megan Barton Hanson shocked fans after directly calling out Vanessa Bauer on Instagram, claiming the Dancing On Ice star showed her ‘zero respect’ while being partnered up with boyfriend Wes Nelson.

However, the drama took another turn when it was claimed the professional skater had hit back at the Love Island star’s comments in a thinly veiled dig on her own profile.

Hamish Gaman – who is partnered with Saara Aalto on the show – shared a photo of himself and Vanessa looking majestic on the ice, asking fans to ‘caption’ the shot.

She later posted the snap on her own Instagram story, with one of the responses appearing to allude to her row with Megan, simply stating: ‘That moment she wins the argument. And she knows it.’

But the 22-year-old has rubbished suggestions the message was anything to do with the Love Island star.

After Hamish asked for more captions on another photo, he added fans should be warned their comments ‘might get twisted’, to which she replied: ‘This!’

So… That is officially that…

It all kicked off earlier this week when Megan was accused of looking annoyed while watching boyfriend Wes’ performance with Vanessa.

She later flipped the whole drama and accused Vanessa of ‘never reaching out’ to her, and purposefully announcing her split on the day of their Dancing On Ice debut.

Taking to her Instagram page, she wrote: ‘@Vanessabauer_skates love that you decide to announce your breakup with your boyfriend on the night of your first performance with my boyfriend!

‘You’ve never reached out to me once or invited me to watch you train, it pained you to introduce yourself to me last night you didn’t even look me in the eye LOL.

‘Hope the tactical breakup got you the headlines you wanted babe,’ she added with a kiss emoji, tagging Wes in for good measure.

Couldn’t she have just sent a quick little message on the group chat…?

While there is a lot to unpack in that one Instagram rant, Meg refused to back down over the whole thing, explaining seeing her beau that close and personal with someone else can be hard.

Megan posted a message for Vanessa on her Instagram story (Picture: Instagram)

‘Every woman will tell you it’s not ideal to have your boyfriend spending 12 hours a day with another woman – a little introduction from Vanessa would have gone a long way,’ she later told The Sun.

‘Dancing on Ice is very romantic and all about looking into each other’s eyes and parading around on the ice and being loved up together – it’s not easy to watch.

‘Girl to girl, if you’re spending that much time with someone’s boyfriend you would reach out to them and say “hi,” you would introduce yourself,’ she continued. ‘But never once, even last week when I said good luck to them both on Instagram she didn’t message me.

‘She claims to be a strong woman and that she empowers women but she’s shown me zero respect. If you’re going to preach empowerment then surely she would have held the olive branch out and introduce herself to me instead of pretending that I don’t exist?’

No wonder Gemma Collins skipped the last part of Sunday’s show over being exhausted, we’re knackered just thinking of the next instalment…

Kourtney Kardashian is aunt goals as she buys Chicago a mini neon G Wagon for her 1st birthday

Little Chicago West has only just turned one but she’s already getting behind the wheel, thanks to aunt Kourtney Kardashian who bought the tot a mini G Wagon for her 1st birthday.

After confirming the news of their fourth child, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West celebrated Chicago’s special day on Tuesday (15 January) and, of course, their youngest child was well and truly spoiled with lavish presents.

Kourtney, 39, found the perfect way to make sure her niece was twinning with her mum Kim, by buying a neon green Mercedes G Series SUV, the same model which Kanye, 41, bought for his wife back in August.

North might win for the sweetest birthday gift (Picture: Kim Kardashian, Instagram)

It seems Chicago was particularly taken with her new wheels as she was seen smiling in Kim’s Instagram Stories while sitting in the G-Wagon with her older siblings, sister North, five, and brother Saint, three.

Thanking her older sister for the thoughtful gift, Kim said: ‘Look what Kourtney pulled up with, we’re having a family dinner to celebrate and this is what Chi gets to match mummy.’

Saint was then seen helping to navigate the steering wheel as Chicago danced along to music playing in the toy car. However, North’s present for the one-year-old was probably the sweetest, as the youngster baked her little sister cupcakes with the letters of her name on each one.

Adorable.

Kim didn’t share any of Chi’s other presents but can they really beat her first car? Doubtful.

Chi’s birthday coincided with Kim’s confirmation that she and Kanye are expecting their fourth child ‘soon’.

In an interview on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live earlier this week, the TV star revealed: ‘It’s a boy, I think it’s been out there. I got drunk at our Christmas Eve party and told some people. I can’t remember who I told because I never get drunk.’

Danny Dyer ate a sheep’s tongue and fermented shark as he explored his history for new BBC series

After winning a Bafta for his installment of Who Do You Think You Are, Danny Dyer is back to explore more of his roots.

The new historical series, Danny Dyer’s Right Royal Family, sees the EastEnders actor explore his ancestors’ lives, giving viewers a unique look through history.

And we are so, so ready for it.

But it seems as though the 41-year-old might not have been, as he was faced with eating an actual sheep’s tongue at one point through his journey.

Danny Dyer chowed down on a sheep’s tongue for new TV show (Picture: WireImage)

Yes, seriously.

Talking to Metro.co.uk and others, he told us: ‘The first relative was a Viking, therefore I went to a Viking village in Sweden. For six months of the year there are actually volunteers who live like Vikings, that are obsessed with that whole era. They live and breathe it, their kids are running around, there’s something quite noble about no iPads or phones or anything like that.

‘So I went and spent the day with them, they taught me how to fight, I navigated a longboat, and I had to eat their grub. And their grub was pretty fucking disgusting. But in their terms it wasn’t… They had cream cheese but they put it in sacks. It tasted a bit like Philadelphia.

‘I had to have fermented shark, that was bad…

‘And I had to crack a sheep’s skull in half and I ate a mouthful of tongue. It had to be done, I can’t be turning up, giving it the big one. No, let’s do it. So that was the only real eating one I had to do…’

Danny got to grips with his royal heritage – and we love him for it (Picture: BBC)

You read that right. A mouthful of tongue.

As well as an interesting banquet, he also donned peasant gear and was marched around the streets of Paris to emulate King Louis VIIII.

Which sounds like a pretty fun day if you ask us…

‘I had to do a procession through the streets of Paris dressed as a peasant, with monks behind me singing, holding the crown of thorns,’ he continued.

‘I got a few looks… But that was what King Louis VIIII did, he did that every year. I dressed as Henry II in Dover Castle and had re-enactors tell me what I had to do in the day. I enjoyed doing that, It was a bit of improv for me.

Danny had the time of his life on his new show (Picture: BBC)

‘I had an Elizabethan banquet dressed as John Seymour… Whatever they put in front of me.’

And what was Danny’s most memorable moment? ‘Probably finding out I’m a direct descendant from a Saint. Saint Louis VIIII, the King of France. He was a saint. There’s only 2000 saints ever, and he was allowed to have children, he had 11 children, and I’ve got his blood knocking about. Make of that what you will!’

However, while we can’t wait to see more of the actor – and his family – finding more about their royal roots, some aren’t as excited, and have claimed the series is dumbing down history.

A little harsh seeing as it hasn’t even aired yet…

Speaking about the backlash, he added: ‘I think it’ll keep it interesting. You need to be a fan of mine, really, to really want to invest in it. I know there’s been a little bit of bad press around this without people even watching a second of it, about how the BBC dumb down history because I’ve got a working class accent or whatever they want to say, but judge it after you’ve watched it, at least.

‘People are bored of that boring history formula and it’s a different way to learn. I try to be funny as much as I possibly can, and I like to embrace every historian with a big cuddle and have a chinwag about history.’

Sounds like an absolute dream.

Danny Dyer’s Right Royal Family begins on Wednesday 23 January, at 9pm, on BBC One.

TXT’s latest member Hueningkai already has K-pop links as his sister was in band Viva

Yesterday we received news of the next member of new K-pop band TXT, with Hueningkai landing in our lives in a big way.

Little did we know though, that the delightful new artist already has some pretty hefty K-pop links.

According to netizens who have already dived into the history of the latest member, Kai’s older sister, Lea (Ri A in Korean) was a member of a K-pop group called Viva.

METROGRAB: TXT new member prep
Hi Hueningkai (Picture: ibighit)

FYI, some spellings also have her name written as Lia.

Viva was a four-member girl group that debuted in 2017, also made up of Gayeon, Jenny and Yeji. They debuted with song Tough Girl, but have already disbanded.

Still, we’re sure he was able to glean some tips from his big sister about his new career in the limelight as part of the same management company as mega group BTS.

Yesterday Big Hit Entertainment announced the third member of their latest group, as Heuningkai joined Yeonjun and Soobin, with more members announced in the coming days to firm up the line up.

Everyone is trying to figure out more information about the performer, with some believing he is half-American, half-Korean.

According to reports, Hueningkai is the maknae of TXT and was born in 2002.

While we don’t know how many members TXT will have – although sources claim there will be five boys in the group – Big Hit detailed the concept of the band as we await the reveal of the other members.

They said in a statement: ‘TOMORROW X TOGETHER is a bright and youthful boyband where each member is different from one another, shining in their own way to create a synergy.

‘Just as how their name suggests, the different members have all come together under one dream in hopes of building a new tomorrow.’

Yeonjun is the oldest member of the group, with the agency describing him as a ’19-year-old member with outstanding dancing skills’ – hinting he may be a member of the dance line, rather than the group’s rapper, as previously rumoured. Meanwhile, Soobin is TXT’s leader and is 18 years old.

We only have to wait til tomorrow to learn the next member, so let the countdown continue.

All the teasers from BTS’s Smeraldo Books so far as harrowing Jin theory comes to light

BTS' new single has dropped (Picture: BigHit)
Smeraldo Books is getting seriously dark (Picture: BigHit)

The Smeraldo Books Twitter account is truly the gift the keeps on giving.

We have been given an insight into the BTS alternate universe with the account, which has been dripfeeding us teasers from ‘The Notes 1’ – a tale based on the members of BTS, but with harrowing plots and backstories.

And the latest teasers we have been given involve V and Jimin.

The account shared a clip showing Taehyung sitting in a room with a girl, with the message: ‘I wanted to kill myself instead of Dad. If I could, I wanted to drop dead right then and there. TaeHyung 20 May Year 22.’

Um, this is dark.

However, a happier clip came next, with the band seen running through a canteen.

The accompanying note, from Jimin, read: ‘”Run, JiMin.” We all started running. I was caught up in the excitement and ran with them.

The snacks and plastic soda bottles flew into the air. JiMin 15 May Year 22.’

So far, we have been given notes from all the other members, hinting at some very troubling scenarios:

All the notes from Smeraldo Books so far

‘Would I be able to straighten out the errors and mistakes and save the others? I didn’t grasp the depth and weight of this question. — SeokJin, May 2, 2022.’

‘The car had just barely missed me. The remaining buzz of the alcohol all made me feel giddy. Then I realized I couldn’t hear the piano anymore. — YoonGi, April 7, 2022.’

‘SeokJin just stood there on the edge of my sight. He didn’t come closer or start talking. — NamJoon, April 11, 2022.’

‘My phone rang. I came back to myself as if awakened from a long dream. I took out my phone. It was YoonGi. — JungKook, April 11, 2022.’

‘My mom handed me a chocolate bar. “HoSeok, close your eyes tight and don’t open them until you count to ten.” — HoSeok, July 23, 2010.’

‘I lied for the first time today. I looked into the doctors eyes and pretended to be depressed. “I can’t remember anything.” —JiMin, Sept. 28, 2020.’

‘The sheet caught fire and instantly flared up. My last sight of this world was this dirty, isolated room, the red-hot flames and rolling heat, and JungKook’s twisted face. —YoonGi, May 2, 2022.’

‘My narcolepy occurred anytime, anywhere. I always ended up having dreams about Mom when I blacked out. The dreams were all alike. I was heading somewhere with Mom on a bus. – HoSeok, 10 May Year 22.’

Smeraldo Books is named after the fictional Smeraldo flower, meaning ‘The Truth Untold’ in the language of flowers.

While we don’t know exactly what the Bangtan Universe will reveal, a popular ARMY theory suggests that Jin is the main character, and will progress through the eras of BTS music attempting to save his friends.

Although if you’re looking for some light entertainment, this ain’t it.

A theory, as put forward by an ARMY on Reddit, suggests that Jin is immortal, and when he dies or is killed, he returns to the room presented in the Epiphany video, where he has his journal.

His goal when he leaves the room is to make his friends happy, but in each era, horrible things happen to his bandmates – including murders, accidents and heartbreak. After failing to make his friends happy, Jin returns to his room and writes down his notes in his journal to figure out what went wrong.

We guess we won’t know the truth, though, until BTS and Smeraldo Books put us out of our misery.

Want Victoria Beckham’s skin regime? You’ll have to spend £1,200 on a cream with your own blood

If you’ve ever wondered how Victoria Beckham achieves her glowing skin, it may have been a DIY job all along.

The former Spice Girls singer has spent £1,200 on a face cream, created by celebrity Dr Barbara Sturm, that uses the client’s own blood.

Talk about au naturel.

Victoria, 44, visited Dusseldorf, Germany last week with her seven-year-old daughter, Harper, who was seen getting a little facial treatment. Well, it seems Victoria instead opted for the latest craze on the market – Dr Sturm’s new cream, MC1, which boasts so-called anti-ageing properties.

To create MC1, Dr Sturm takes a sample of the client’s blood in a consultation and creates a pot of 50ml cream in her lab. In case you’re wondering what happens to the rest, it’s frozen for future orders.

The main draw of MC1 is the blood’s ability to heal the body using proteins IL-1 and TGF-beta, which help to reduce inflammation, strengthen tissue and promote collagen growth.

Ever heard of celebrities getting thos ‘vampire facials’? Yep, Dr Sturm was the one who created them using ‘endogamous blood therapy’.

In an Instagram video last week, Victoria told her followers: ‘Dr Sturm took my blood and created healing factors made by my own cells, which is highly anti-inflammatory and regenerative.

‘I’ll be testing it out this week both morning and night.’

The fashion designer later shared a video in which she removed a Sturm facemask, retailing for £118, after sleeping in it overnight.

In footage of Harper’s facial, the youngster was seen lying down on one of the spa’s beds with her hair all taken back in a net, while the beautician dabbed her face with a towel. Victoria captioned the video: ‘Baby facial with @drbarbarasturm… We must use clean products on our children.’

Gemma Collins has certainly been making her mark on Dancing On Ice since the series kicked off a couple of weeks ago.

The GC not only made that memorable debut in the rink, in which she channelled her inner Beyonce, but has also been hitting the headlines with her behind the scenes antics.

And she was reportedly left in tears after comments Holly Willoughby later made about her behaviour – leading to reports that she was about to quit the show.

So has she, or will we be seeing her back on the ice come Sunday night?

Well the rumours were sparked after Kem Cetinay – who is presenting the backstage gossip from the show this year – told This Morning that the Towie stalwart left before the end of Sunday night’s show because she ‘got bored’.

It came following reports that she showed up late to group dance rehearsals during the week, leaving the others wondering where she was – as well as reports claiming she had asked a camera crew to leave so she could rehearse.

All of which prompted an outburst from Holly Willoughby as she said: ‘I really love Gemma, I’m a big fan of Gemma’s and I think she’s great on the show.

‘But, I think there needs to be a little bit of professionalism that comes into any work you do. Just a little pride in your work. You just shouldn’t do that.’

And after Kem explained she had left early on Sunday, adding ‘but she does love skating’, Holly snapped: ‘That’s absolute rubbish. That’s just a really good excuse to get out of stuff you don’t want to do.

‘I love that side of her but I think professionalism will always outweigh that diva behaviour. Naughty Gemma.’

Cue the rumours that she had quit – but don’t worry Gemma fans, she will be back, with an ITV spokesperson saying there is ‘no truth’ to the rumours and adding: ‘Gemma is loving being on the show and we love having her.’

The reality star also told a fan on Twitter that she would be back next Sunday.

So we can all look forward to seeing what The GC pulls out of the bag next as she and skating partner Matt Evers take on musicals week.

Thank goodness for that.

Dancing On Ice continues on ITV on Sunday night at 6pm.

Kim Kardashian gave fans serious whiplash recently after opening up about taking ecstasy when she was younger.

The 38-year-old claimed she was high on drugs when she filmed her infamous sex tape, and at the time of her first marriage, way back in 2000.

And sisters Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian have now confessed they also experimented with ecstasy, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.

Where were these scenes on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, eh?

Host Andy Cohen got right to the gossip, asking the reality stars: ‘We know that Kim has done ecstasy before, but what about the other sisters?’

Khlo, 34, admitted: ‘I’ve done it with Kim before…’ before swiftly throwing Kourt under the bus with her own history.

‘I don’t know,’ the 39-year-old replied.

Having none of it, Khloe fumed: ‘You don’t know what? If you took a pill once?’

‘I have. But I don’t think I did it with you two. I think I would kill myself,’ she eventually confessed.

Their shock admissions come after Kim claimed she did all the bad things in the early noughties ‘when she was high’.

Yes, seriously.

She made the admission during a recent episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, leaving younger sister Kendall Jenner completely shocked.

‘I didn’t know you got high!’ the supermodel screamed as she probed Kimmy on rumours she heard.

Laughing it off, the mum-of-three told her: ‘I got married on ecstasy… The first time.

‘I did ecstasy once, and I got married. I did it again, I made a sex tape. Like, everything bad would happen.

‘Everyone knows it: Like, my jaw was shaking the whole time.’

She was referring to her first marriage, to producer Damon Thomas, and the 2003 sex tape she made with ex-boyfriend Ray J – who has since hit out at her claims.

But, despite claiming she’s changed from her younger days, she vowed she is still the life and soul of the party.

‘I definitely went through a wild phase, I would say in my late teens,’ she told the camera.

‘I’m not like that anymore. But I still have fun — don’t get it twisted, I’m always the life of the party.’

We’ll have to take your word for that…
