Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnely surprised Britain’s Got Talent’s Dave and Finn with the vet who saved Finn’s life in tonight’s finale.

The presenting duo waited until the mind-reading hopefuls had performed one last time in front of judges Amanda Holden, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Simon Cowell before they revealed that there was an extra special guest in the audience.

‘There’s a special guest here this evening,’ announced Ant. ‘It is the vet that saved Finn’s life.’

The camera then panned onto the unnamed vet, who Dave credits for saving his dog’s life, and he was seen waving at the camera while Dave stood in shock.

‘We thank you,’ Ant told him before turning to the contestants, adding: ‘We thank Dave and we thank Finn.’

Viewers were pretty emotional at the surprise (Picture: Twitter)

Viewers were in tears over the emotional scenes on Twitter, writing: ‘Oh for goodness sake I was keeping it together when Dave & Finn were performing then they had to go & tell us the vet who saved Finn’s life is in the audience. I’m in absolute floods now!’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘Well that’s me, a blubbering wreck. Thanks Finn. Great performance, but to see the vet was the icing on the cake.’

Officer Dave, 42, previously revealed how dog German Shephard Finn saved his owner’s life by preventing him from being stabbed during a police operation.

Finn almost didn’t make it himself but luckily pulled through and Dave says he almost certainly wouldn’t have survived was it not for the dog’s instincts.

The stabbing incident inspired Dave to campaign for Finn’s Law, which closes a loophole that meant police animals were treated as property so charges couldn’t be brought against someone who harmed them in the line of duty.

The judges were blown away by Dave and Finn’s final performance, with David saying: ‘The bond you have is so special and anybody out there with a pet is looking at the two of you and thinking this is adorable. And you know what? With the law being passed you’re winners already.’

‘You’ve had a great night and I think the nation loves you both so fingers crossed,’ Alesha added.

Amanda swooned: ‘For me the most important thing here is Finn’s law. I think you highlighting that and raising your profile in order to promote that and achieve it is absolutely fantastic so congratulations.’

Britain’s Got Talent continues on ITV.

David Beckham was joined by wife Victoria and their four children in Miami, as he continues work with his new football club.

And the 44-year-old shared a rare photo of them all together during their trip across the pond.

‘Thank you Miami what a beautiful week, creating special memories & so excited @intermiamicf.

‘So many more to come,’ he added, before tagging Posh Spice, as well as Cruz, Romeo and Brooklyn Beckham.

Making sure Harper didn’t get left out, the former England footballer added the hashtag, Harper Seven.

His 55.9million followers went into meltdown over the upload, rushing to praise the famous family.

An impressed fan posted: ‘Family goals?? Mama’s body goals!!’

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByNcRW9hOfW/

‘Cruz is turning into David Beckham,’ another posted.

With Victoria’s former bandmate, Mel C, adding: ‘What a lovely family!’

We totally agree.

David’s picture comes after Michael Sheen lifted the lid on a time he met the couple in LA – admitting it was seriously awkward.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the actor revealed the former England ace – and Victoria – actually mistook him for a homeless man, when he was with daughter Lily Mo.

‘I was in LA and went to pick her up from an ice skating lesson,’ he told the host.

‘When I got there the Beckhams were there checking out the rink for lessons.

‘I was quite hirsute then and when Posh saw me she called security thinking I was a tramp trying to abduct my daughter!’

Thankfully, he presumably managed to explain he’s actually a major Hollywood star…

Amanda Holden has opened up about the heartbreak of losing her son Theo.

The 48-year-old and her husband Chris Hughes, who share daughters Hollie and Lexie, went through a tragic ordeal in February 2011, after their son was sadly stillborn at seven months.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge said that the strength of her family has helped her cope with the heartbreak.

And she explained that she has been spending the last seven years processing her sorrow in her autobiography No Holding Back.

Speaking to You Magazine, she revealed that feelings of grief are ‘always there’ explaining: ‘Theo will always be part of our family.

‘He would have been a year older than Hollie. I often look at the children in the year above her and think, “Oh yes, today Theo would have been doing this”.

‘It’s not something to get over, but I’ve got my head round it, and I’ve got my amazing hubby, and our love for each other and our family got us through.’

The Heart FM radio presenter previously took part in a half-marathon in support of Theo’s Hope, a charity that she set up to find bereavement counsellors at Tommy’s Stillbirth Research Centre at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester.

She had miscarried a son at 16 weeks in 2010 and was seven months pregnant with Theo when a scan revealed his heart had stopped.

Amanda’s sombre words come as she made headlines for her outfit choices on Britain’s Got Talent.

The TV presenter is no stranger to going viral after racking up a number of Ofcom complaints about her accidental swear word on BGT – and more recently for her show-stopping revealing dress on the semi-finals of the talent show.

Amanda’s recent dress was a strong talking point (Picture: Amanda Holden/Instagram)

Amanda’s choice of dress on the hit variety program two years ago also struck a chord with 663 outraged viewers, who wrote to the TV regulator about her plunging Julian Macdonald dress.

But complaints are the new form of flattery for the mother-of-two who loves the fact that her boobs are still a hot topic of conversation.

Speaking to the Mail Online, she said: ‘I love it that people are still talking about my tired old breasts and I’m nearly 50!

‘No one talks about [BGT co-host] Alesha Dixon’s – she’s got great boobs, by the way – and she’s eight years younger than me.’

For the third semi finals of BGT, Amanda wore a daring Nicholas Jebran dress with a nude embroidered lace detail on one side, which garnered mixed reviews from viewers online.

Amanda also opened up about the death of her beloved grandmother Ethel, who died at the age of 97, and how her grandmother’s strength is a characteristic that all women in her family share.

Together, their life mantra is: ‘Speak up, speak out and be strong.’

She said: ‘She was my biggest inspiration.

‘She went to hell and back, but she’s carried on like nothing happened’

Britain’s Got Talent magician X finally revealed his identity during tonight’s live finale, unveiling himself to be former contestant Marc Spelmann.

Marc appeared on the ITV talent show last year and was Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer act, however failed to make it into the finale.

As he took off his mask, the performer said: ‘It was always hope and never giving up. It’s been an honour sharing X with you. I am X. Thank you.’

Judges Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, David Walliams and Amanda Holden were completely dumbfounded, with Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly also blown away by the jaw-dropping moment.

‘Thank God it wasn’t Steven Mulhern,’ joked David before adding: ‘You are an absolute master of your craft. This is incredible and to keep that a secret for so long. Wow, wow wow.’

Meanwhile, Simon gasped: ‘I mean I never in a million years would get that. The moment you came on, it’s been amazing amazing amazing. So many people come on the show and they give up, you’ve really worked this out and you’ve done something absolutely incredible. I’ve loved every minute. Good for you.’

‘I had chills,’ admitted Alesha. ‘I thought if this X does well I really want to know the mystery man.

‘I’m absolutely dumbfounded. What an incredible moment. This is the most surprised I’ve ever been on the show.’

Amanda enthused: ‘I mean it’s been the talk of the country. It’s really hard to put into words except that I really admire you and I think you did a fantastic job. What a brilliant brilliant surprise.’

Explaining reasons for keeping his identity hidden, Marc told viewers in a video: ‘I was in Britain’s Got Talent last year and I was a significant feature of last year because of the context of the audition and the story behind it.

‘I wanted to be anonymous for that reason. I didn’t want to have any success because of that.’

He added: ‘I just wanted to speak from the heart and deliver a message of hope.’

Tonight’s live final is being filmed at London’s Hammersmith Apollo with Britain’s Got Talent legends Diversity and Susan Boyle making a comeback to the stage for its 10th anniversary.

Britain’s Got Talent continues tonight on ITV.

Love Island 2019 officially kicks off as girls enter the villa with Caroline Flack for first coupling up

Love Island 2019 is well and truly underway now as the first five girls have officially entered the villa.

Spoiler pictures for Monday night’s upcoming launch show this year’s original females Amy Hart, Amber Gill, Anna Vakili, Yewande Biala and Lucie Dolan make their way to the revamped Majorcan getaway, kicking off the fifth season with a bang.

Judging by the pics Amber and Amy are the first in and they look raring to go as they cheer from Range Rovers before strutting into their new home in their swimwear.

Snaps also see presenter Caroline Flack getting in on the action and she joins the gang around the fire pit before introducing the crop of male islanders and, you guessed it, the all important coupling up.

Joining them will be Anton Danyluk, Tommy Fury, Joe Garratt, Michael Griffiths, Sherif Lanre, Callum Macleod and Curtis Pritchard.

Although less than 24 hours stand in the way before this year’s Love Island officially gets started, the drama has already been in full swing.

A photograph of contestant Anton in blackface emerged just hours before the launch, with his mum defending accusations that her son is racist.

‘I wanted to take the opportunity to assure everyone that my son, who himself is mixed heritage, is not a racist,’ she said. ‘As his mother I know he would be mortified to be labelled in such a way, and would whole heartedly apologise to anyone offended by this picture.

‘There was absolutely no racist intent and almost six years down the line, I know it’s not the way Anton would ever behave today.’

Meanwhile, Amber has made it clear in unearthed video that she doesn’t ‘like black guys’, with her reps telling Metro.co.uk that the social media post was ‘taken out of context’ and that she is ‘not racist’ because her own dad is from Trinidad and Tobago.

Love Island kicks off Monday 3 June at 9pm on ITV2.

Cheryl spotted in Britain’s Got Talent audience hours after ruling out performance

Cheryl spotted on Britain;s Got Talent

Cheryl was spotted nervously watching Jonathan Goodwin’s Britain Got Talent performance during tonight’s grand finale.

The 35-year-old singer, who dropped new sassy pop track Let You earlier this week, was seen with her hand anxiously planted on her chin at The London Palladium as she waited to see whether the contestant made it out of his stunt alive.

On top of Marc Spelmann unveiling himself as mystery contestant X, medical assistants joined the stage halfway through Jonathan’s act to assist, you know, just in case anything went wrong, and Cheryl was on the edge of her seat.

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed the former Girls Aloud star instantly and rushed to Twitter to ask whether she’d be performing alongside Britain’s Got Talent royalty Susan Boyle and Diversity.

‘I wish Cheryl would perform Let You on the BGT final. She’s already in the audience,’ wrote one.

Cheryl revealed on Instagram with a close friend that she sadly wouldn’t be taking to the stage tonight, explaining: ‘I’m in the way to see the BGT final. I’m excited to see some magic.’

The star’s friend explained that she wouldn’t be singing ‘because it’s a variety show’  and ‘they already have their music acts planned.’

Cheryl added: ‘They wanted variety acts and they already had their music acts booked before I released my new song, so I’m sorry about that.’

A grand total of 11 acts are set to take to the stage in the Britain’s Got Talent finale, including Dave and Finn (mind-reading act) Flakefleet Primary School (choir) 4MG (magicians) Siobhan Phillips (comedian and singer) Colin Thackery (singing Chelsea Pensioner) Kojo Anim (comedian) Ben Hart (magician) Mark McMullan (singer) X (magician) Jonathan Goodwin (escapologist) Libby and Charlie (dance duo).

Only one lucky contestant will be crowned winner and will walk away with a cash prize of £250,000 and a slot at this year’s Royal Variety.

Jonathan Goodwin’s Britain’s Got Talent finale performance had viewers terrified, as health and safety workers rushed on stage.

The escape artist took his act several stages further as he was suspended from a glass cage on stage – as it quickly filled with gravel.

However, things appeared to take a worrying turn when the box overflowed, with gravel spilling out of all sides, and no sight of the 39-year-old.

While viewers at home held their breath, and the cameras panned to a panic-stricken Amanda Holden, health and safety staff rushed on stage, alongside Ant and Dec.

Thankfully, a heartstopping few minutes later, Jonathan’s hand appeared at the top of the box, and he was eventually able to free himself.

Side note: While it may have only been a few moments, waiting for him to escape felt like decades.

Alesha branded the whole performance ‘unreal’, telling him: ‘What is wrong with you? I turned to David during that and said, “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry”.

‘It’s not good for my nerves. You are unreal. You could be the next David Blaine, you’re brilliant.’

And Amanda added: ‘It was brilliant, it was thrilling, it was scary, and when health and safety came on, it always is a worry, and then Ant and Dec, the whole thing…

‘It was a horrifically brilliant thing to watch, I loved every second of it.’

Viewers at home were left horrified by the act, with many terrified he had died.

‘Jonathan Goodwin on Britain’s Got Talent just then, my god I thought he was a gonna!! #BGTFinal2019,’ one said.

‘Omg Jonathan Goodwin… never been so on edge before but INCREDIBLE #bgt,’ another commented.

‘Woah!! Jonathan Goodwin could win @BGT after that,’ a fan wrote. ‘I genuinely thought he was dead for a second. My heart is only just recovering. Incredible. #BGTFinal #BGT

‘Anyone else hold their breath while Jonathan Goodwin got buried? Nutter. #BGTFinal,’ a Twitter user added.

Colin Thackery has won Britain’s Got Talent 2019, becoming the oldest winner of the ITV series.

The singing Chelsea pensioner, 89, beat out stiff competition from second-placed illusionist X and magician Ben Hart, who came in third, to take home the ITV crown – thanks to his emotional performance of Love Changes Everything.

Dave and police dog Finn, Mark McMullan, Siobhan Phillips, Jonathan Goodwin, Libby and Charlie, 4MG, the Flakefleet Primary School choir also rounded out the ITV final, live at the Hammersmith Apollo on 2 June.

As well as the win, he was also handed £250,000 and a spot at the Royal Variety Show.

‘Absolutely astonished,’ he told hosts Ant and Dec. ‘It’s incredible, I don’t know what to say. I’m stuck for words for a change.

‘Thank you very much, all of you, all the backing I’ve had. It’s been wonderful.’

Colin previously revealed he would ‘die happy’ if he got to meet the Queen.

When asked how he felt that he would be performing for her at the Royal Variety Performance, he added: ‘That’s the job, that’s what I wanted it to be.’

Coin was crowned winner of Britain’s Got Talent following his performance of Love Changes Everything.

And it was a tear-jerking moment, to say the least.

Despite being the last contestant to perform on stage, David Walliams praised him for creating a ‘magical moment’ for the audience, branding him ‘unbeatable’.

While Simon told the singer he had his ‘utmost respect’.

The pensioner originally won his place in the live shows after delivering his rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings at his first audition, a song he dedicated to his late wife.

Afterwards David told him. ‘There is not a dry eye in the house.

‘It was just the most perfect tribute and you sang with such heart that it affected us deeply. It was beautiful.’

‘You are going to have a moment. It was sincere and it was real and you are what this show is all about so thank you,’ music mogul Simon added.

It was an emotional final as Susan Boyle returned to the BGT stage to perform with Michael Ball – a decade after the competition turned her into a worldwide superstar.

‘It feels very surreal,’ she told the hosts. ‘I’m at home on stage, nothing much has changed.’

And it was announced live on stage that SuBo would be back on our screens later in the year – competing on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions.

Will Colin be joining her?

Ant and Dec have confirmed Susan Boyle will be competing in Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions.

Following her performance of A Million Dreams with Michael Ball on Britain’s Got Talent grand finale, the hosts made the announcement after she was tipped for a return.

Addressing the audience on Sunday night, Ant said: ‘Susan is one the amazing acts who will be appearing on a very special new show coming up later on the year called Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions.

‘Where the finest acts of the last 13 years of BGT will compete with some of the best acts from around the world to find the ultimate champion. We can’t wait for that.’

Dec then joked: ‘Have they got a host yet?’

To which Ant replied: ‘I think we are doing it.’

Speaking of her return to the stage, after coming in second place in 2009, she said: ‘It feels very surreal being back. My home stage. It hasn’t really changed that much.’

The news comes after judge Simon Cowell was said to be particularly keen to have his beloved SuBo on board, after the 58-year-old went down a storm over on America’s Got Talent: The Champions earlier this year.

‘American viewers were furious when SuBo didn’t win and now Simon wants to give her a second shot by getting her on the British version of the show,’ a source told The Sun.

‘Susan’s a great competitor, has a fascinating back story and is really popular with the British public. ‘She came second in her original appearance and got near on AGT — so this could be third time lucky.’

Ant and Dec announced Susan’s involvement minutes before crowning Colin Thackery as the winner of this year’s series.

Love Island’s Tommy Fury ‘dated Hollyoaks star Chelsee Healey’ before heading to the villa

Love Island’s Tommy Fury might be prepping to look for love in the villa but it looks like he’s already had a go at cracking on with a celebrity.

The 20-year-old boxer reportedly once dated Hollyoaks actor Chelsee Healey, 30, after they bumped into each during a night out in Manchester, the Mirror reports.

However, they apparently got off to a rocky start as Tommy – who is the young brother of heavyweight champion Tyson – failed to complete the pull and went home without her number.

But all wasn’t lost as he hopped on Instagram to send the actress ‘a string of flirty messages.’

A source close to the boxer said: ‘We were on a night out in Manchester and Chelsee just happened to be there.

‘Tommy noticed her straight away and couldn’t stop looking at her. He was proper smitten.

‘They knew some of the same people and he begged one of our mates for an introduction. He was being his usual cheeky self and she was laughing, so whatever he was saying seemed to work.’

The pal said Chelsee eventually responded to his DMs and they went out on a date, where he decided she was ‘out of his league’.

The insider added: ‘Now Tommy’s turned his attention to the show and is hoping he’ll have better luck in the villa.’

Tommy need not worry as there will be plenty girls to pick from in this year’s line up, when the show begins tomorrow on ITV2.

The reports come after Tommy was allegedly caught texting about buying cocaine days before his debut.

He reportedly was seen messaging a group on WhatsApp ahead of a weekend stay in the Lake District for the May 6 Bank Holiday, talking about picking up the class A substance.

Tommy believed Chelsee was ‘out of his league’ (Picture: ITV)
In a text obtained by The Sun on Sunday, Tommy allegedly wrote: ‘Anyone want a lot of coke for the night?’

A source told the publication: ‘When he sent the message to the WhatsApp group everybody just kind of ignored it. He hadn’t taken part in any of the conversation and it was such a random message.

‘He clearly wanted to have a wild weekend and get anybody else he could involved as well.’

A Love Island spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘We have no means of contextualising these messages or indeed verifying that they have even come from Tommy. ‘

The ITV2 dating show is set to kick off on Monday (3 June) and already several hopefuls have been ‘axed after failing to pass a surprise drug test.’

It’s been reported that bosses implemented drug testing ahead of the show airing for the first time.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for both Tommy Fury and Chelsee Healey for comment.

BTS broke down in tears during their second sold-out show at Wembley Stadium – and it’s all thanks to their Army.

The fandom surprised their K-Pop favourites as they sang Young Forever as a surprise tribute.

Proving exactly why they are the most dedicated fans in the business, the 90,000-strong crowd belted out the song for their favourites, thanking them for putting on an exceptional string of shows.

And the Boys With Luv singers were definitely taken aback by the whole thing, pausing as they teared up.

Instantly, videos of Jimin, Jin, J-Hope, Suga, RM, V and Jungkook breaking down over the surprise, flooded social media.

‘BTS reaction to Young Forever surprise event,’ one posted. ‘The way they were confused for a second and then crumbled. I literally have been crying for a hot minute now..’

‘The staff made army sing the chorus of Young Forever and damn when I tell you the boys burst in tears omg I’m so emo rn. Especially Jungkook and Jimin, those two couldn’t even stop and made me cry too (sic),’ another commented.

‘How am I supposed to go on the rest of my night after that?! @BTS_twt someone should go live to comfort the rest of ARMY bawling over this so much love I can’t,’ a fan begged. ‘#BTSatWembley #BTS #foreveryoung.’

While a Twitter user added: ‘@BTS_twt you deserve the whole world! This is just a small thank you for everything u do for us we will remain #foreveryoung. #BTSatWembley #BTS.’

And, honestly, we’re fighting back the tears too…

BTS’ Jimin recently opened up about how much the fans mean to the Fake Luv singers, explaining they want to stay healthy so they can do the Army justice.

During a press conference, he told Metro.co.uk and others: ‘Rather than focus on records what I felt was from our Love Yourself tour we had a series of performances and I thought, how long we can go on doing this but I want to perform with the members and fans as long as I can.

‘For as long as I can. I would like to do what I’m doing. That’s my goal.’

‘We are trying to stay healthy as much as we can,’ Jin added.

‘The healthier we are the longer we can spend with fans.

‘We will have fan meetings in Korea in Busan and Seoul and there are a lot of Army waiting for us so we will put on a good stage for them.’

Ant and Dec follow in Simon Cowell’s footsteps as they fulfill ‘life-long dream’ and team up with Santander

Ant and Dec are following in Simon Cowell’s footsteps by teaming up with Santander.

Yes, while the music mogul is currently doing campaigns for Barclaycards, the presenting duo have decided to give it a whirl themselves, and have opened up their very own bank.

Which is surprisingly called, the bank of Antanddec – we wonder how long it took for them to come up with that.

In a tongue-in-cheek advert, the boys could be seen discussing their ‘life-long dream’ to work in the financial sector and teased their fans that becoming TV stars was just a stepping stone to their ‘real passion.’

While hanging out at their new HQ, they then laughed about having found a gap in the market – because apparently, no one had heard about banking before they had.

Hmm…

Talking about the campaign, Ant said: ‘We’re really excited to be partnering with Santander.

‘They presented us with a really fun creative which we couldn’t resist, who would say no to having their own bank brought to life.’

The 43-year-old added: ‘We really hope people love the campaign as much as we do and along with enjoying the humour can see how Santander can help people with whatever their banking needs may be.’

And it seems Santander are just as pleased to be teaming up with the duo, as CMO Keith Moor praised the pair.

‘The concept behind the campaign and its speed to market is testament both to the power of a great idea and the synergy between the duo and the bank.

‘We look forward to working closely with them over the years to come.’

The bank of Antanddec launches today, 3 June, and hopes to help customers realise their aspirations.

It will run across digital display, video on demand, online video, cinema, TV, social, outdoor digital screens, radio and the bank’s owned channels, including its branches and the Santander UK website.

Priyanka Chopra has some pretty big plans for herself and husband Nick Jonas, and it might make Donald Trump quiver in his boots.

The Bollywood actress has opened up about her political aspirations as she eyes a run for office.

‘I would love to run for prime minister of India. I would love Nick to run for president,’ the 36-year-old The Sunday Times. ‘I don’t like the things associated with politics … but I know that both of us really want to make a change.

‘Never say never.’

Did somebody say power couple?

Although, we would love for Priyanka to aim for the more powerful presidency office, because, girl power.

While the star told the publication that she is aiming to remain politically quiet through her life, because she likes to ‘cheer for humanity’, the Quantico star couldn’t deny the fact that her 26-year-old spouse would make a great leader.

‘He’s not afraid to use the word [feminist] and I love that,’ she told the website.

The couple recently walked the pink carpet of the Met Gala together, fully embracing the theme, Camp: Notes On Fashion.

Priyanka recently said the event was fun because she was attending with her ‘best friend’, but admitted their first outing to the event in 2017 as a couple was ‘so awkward’.

‘We didn’t know each other,’ she told People. ‘We were vibing.’

Who knew just two years later they’d be married?

Certainly not Priyanka, as she has admitted she misread him when they first met: ‘I didn’t think that this is what it [would’ve] turned out to be, and that’s maybe that’s my fault, I judged a book by its cover.’

Conan Unconquered review – barbarians at the gate

Conan Unconquered (PC) - the best strategy here is to play a different game
Conan Unconquered (PC) – the best strategy here is to play a different game

The creators of Command & Conquer offer a new spin on real-time strategy games, with a co-op challenge in the Hyborian Age.

Cyberpunk 2077 - E3's semi-unseen masterpieceGames Inbox: Will Cyberpunk 2077 be out this year?

Despite the best efforts of indie developers there are still some genres of video game that are all but extinct. You still get the odd low budget graphic adventure, but nobody except Star Citizen seems to have the money or expertise for space combat simulators anymore. The one that surprises, and disappoints, us the most though is the poor old real-time strategy game. Nobody seems interested in, or capable, of making an RTS anymore, not even those that helped to establish the genre in the first place.

Developer Petroglyph has been around since 2003 and is run by a number of veterans of Westwood Studios, who created genre progenitors Dune II and Command & Conquer in the early 90s. As encouraging as that sounds they haven’t done much of note since, just 2006’s Star Wars: Empire At War and a number of increasingly low budget strategy efforts, such as the so-so Grey Goo and the risible 8-Bit Armies series.

Currently they’re working on a remaster of the original Command & Conquer for EA and we can only hope that inspires some kind of return to greatness, because Conan Unconquered is yet another disappointment. To its credit, it’s not nearly as formulaic as most other real-time strategies but as admirable as it is to try new ideas, how they’re executed is just as important…

A quick glance at the screenshots or videos would have you assume this is a real-time strategy game like any other. A lot of the basics are the same, particularly in terms of building up and fortifying your city. But rather than roaming around the map, taking on rival armies, your troops spend most of their time defending themselves against waves of attacking enemies.

However, it’d be wrong to describe Conan Unconquered as a Tower Defense game, because you do much more than just set up automatically-firing towers. Although you are forced to play defensively a lot of the time, it’s important to constantly expand your city to cover as much ground as possible and to allow room for internal expansion and newly researched defences.

Although resources are always scarce there’s never any real attempt to turn the game into a proper city builder, as everything is geared towards surviving the next wave of attackers. When you do need to project your forces further afield you have control of both cannon fodder units and a couple of MOBA style hero characters.

Exploring the wilderness as Conan himself hints at the more interesting, Diablo-esque game that this could have been, with some genuinely enjoyable boss style encounters. Fighting giant monsters and earning extra resources is a lot more enjoyable than just sitting back and waiting for people to run at you, or at least it would be if the artificial intelligence for allies and enemies wasn’t so painfully dim-witted and often oblivious to its surroundings. Which wouldn’t be so bad if the game wasn’t so relentlessly hard and you didn’t spend most of the time berating your own troops for their stupidity.

Conan Unconquered (PC) - as bad as it looks
Conan Unconquered (PC) – as bad as it looks

If Conan Unconquered was a low budget indie release it would be easier to forgive its modest ambitions and outdated visuals, but it’s clearly had some amount of money pumped into it. It’s the latest attempt by publisher Funcom to make Conan a multi-genre brand, following the equally scrappy Conan Exiles and MMO Age Of Conan. There’s some great-looking pre-rendered cut scenes, for example, but these immediately backfire as they create a huge disconnect between what you’d want the game to look like and the low-tech, low-resolution reality.

The one positive aspect of Conan Unconquered is the co-op, which allows two players to work together and brings the game closer to being a sort of real-time strategy version of an online shooter’s survival mode. We suspect that was the original pitch for the game, but while the basics are all here everything’s far too shallow and repetitive to keep your interest for more than a few hours.

The problems with repetition are underlined by the fact that the desert setting is the only one in the game, with the map being randomly generated every time you play. Apart from some tutorials there’s no proper story campaign, or story of any kind really, and you’re just left to play against the computer on your own or, if you’re lucky (and they’re unlucky), with a friend.

To be fair to Petroglyph, innovating in the RTS genre has proven impossible for seemingly everyone, which is probably the real reason why there are so few new ones being made. But you’d think the creators of the genre would be able to come up with something better than this ugly, repetitive, and thoroughly shallow strategy.

Conan Unconquered

In Short: Not your typical real-time strategy game, but despite a few interesting ideas this shallow husk of a game feels almost barbarically simple.

Pros: The co-op mode is fun, if you can find someone willing to sit through it with you, and the basic idea did have potential.

Cons: Simplistic gameplay, with little variety and terrible artificial intelligence. Highly repetitive, weak graphics, and extremely limited single-player.

Cyberpunk 2077 - E3's semi-unseen masterpiece
Cyberpunk 2077 – when do you think it’ll be out?

The morning Inbox advises against buying a new video game console on day one, as one reader is already tired of hearing about 8K.

To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ukmetro.co.uk

PLEASE NOTE: Our technical problems seem to be finally fixed, so we’ll now try and return to the regular twice-daily schedule for Inboxes. However, because of the outage we’re now desperately short of normal letters and Reader’s Features, so we need as many emails as possible to get back up to speed.

Too crunchy

I see the rumour going around at the moment about Cyberpunk 2077 is that it was aiming for a 2019 release but that’s either been abandoned or is about to be. I think a lot of people just thought CD Projekt were being coy about the next gen versions and assuming they were the only ones (which is perfectly reasonable based on the in-game graphics and the proximity to the next gen).

I wonder if the stories about CD Projekt having a bad office environment meant that the only way they could’ve got it out this year would’ve been a crunch, and the didn’t want to risk the bad publicity. Either way, I really can’t see how the current gen consoles can do the game justice based on what we’ve seen.

I don’t believe for a second that the game is going to look anywhere near as good as it does in the gameplay video on current consoles and I’d personally rather just wait for the PlayStation 5. It’d actually be a good excuse to get one, given the state of most console’s first couple of years, so I’m happy to wait. I’ll be interested to see how they tackle the subject at E3 though and if they announce a release date. But my bet is the Cyberpunk 2077 will not be out this year.
Basalt

Consumer testing

Am I being silly or are most people that buy a new console on release day asking for trouble? As usual I will wait and see what issues come up and more than likely wait until v2 is released before I commit to a new smaller and hopefully cheaper version.

From memory the only console I got as it came out was my Wii and that had to be repaired within the warranty period (disc drive failed, which was an issue with the Wii at the time). I got a first generation Xbox 360 (used) and had to send it in with Red Light of Death fault.

As the tech gets more complicated it needs more time to test but these companies have investors to please so the consumer is the final tester and usually gets the poo end of the stick.

Wait and benefit from the early adopters and save yourself the grief of customer service calls.
Bobwallett

Virtual decision

I wanted to say a big thanks to GC and Simundo Jones for the advice on my PlayStation VR Vs. Oculus Quest dilemma. I feel Simundo Jones hit the nail on the head when he said that, in my circumstances, choosing either would mean compromising.

I’m not sure I can wait for a PlayStation VR 2 or Oculus Quest 2 release, as who knows how many years they may realistically take and it’d mean missing out on a lot of quality of games/experiences already on offer. GC’s advice on waiting to see the regularity of Quest game releases was a great shout, in theory.

In line with this, I was all ready to wait a while before investing in VR. That was until stanley71 brought the Days of Play PlayStation VR deal to my attention – £209.99 for PSVR with five games has probably made my decision for me!

Brief annoucement

In a quarter of a century we have had console announcements such as the N64 with its revolutionary control pad and unveiling great games such as Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007, Pilotwings 64, etc. Plus the potential of the ultimate arcade experience delivered in our living rooms with the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn confirming heavyweights such as Ridge Racer, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, etc.

And now the PlayStation 5 is being announced and all we have to get excited about is 8K, which barely anyone will notice and slightly faster loading times! Oh, wait a minute I can hear a foghorn, boooooorrrrrrrriiiiiiinnnnnng!
adams6legend
PS: The biggest compliment I can pay Cuphead is that I can’t decide whether this or SNES Super Probotector is the best run and gun/boss fight game ever.

GC: The loading time demonstration wasn’t meant to be seen by the public and the Wired article – the only time Sony has openly spoken about the PlayStation 5 – mentions 8K only in passing.

Video game plumbers

The reader who was talking about Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 and its legendary status as an incoherent mess should check out AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) on YouTube. He’s got about 150 episodes where he reviews the worst games and consoles of all time. Sega 32X, Virtua Boy, Amiga CD32, Atari 5200 all get a kicking but it’s his loyal followers who’ve dug out some truly ghastly titles that I’d never heard of previously.

Superman 64 and co. all get mentioned (there’s two episodes on Sonic The Hedgehog 2006) but it’s the unknown horrors of Hong Kong 97, Big Rigs 2000, Drake Of The 99 Dragons, and Desert Bus that really do open your eyes to the bleakness of video game hell.

I’d personally go with his review of Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties on the 3DO (any reader who actually owned one please write in) as the worst of the lot. He’s prone to using scatological terminology so not everyone may enjoy his brand of humour but they’re worth watching just to show gamers the murky dark depths of video game torture.

Hangover cure

RE: zx-ninja and motion sickness in VR.

I get really bad motion sickness as a passenger in cars, unless I’m staring out the window. Literally more than 30 seconds looking at my phone while a vehicle is moving will start to make me feel sick. While I can’t comment on the PlayStation VR specifically, I got an Oculus Rift a few days ago. Had the exact same concerns as you but had hardly any problems with motion sickness. Been playing it a lot too. Even played it with a hangover and felt fine.

See if there’s an arcade near you with Beat Saber to test how you feel.
Anon
PS: If you do buy a PlayStation VR, would highly recommend Superhot VR. Clumsily throwing hammers and ninja stars at enemies while poking out of imaginary cover is one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in a very long time.

It’s only cardboard

Just found a most awesome thing.

Played Super Mario Odyssey for the first time in ages, got option for VR. I grabbed a cheap mobile phone VR headset that I haven’t used in ages, the sort they sell in discount shops.

Worked a treat! Switch VR for a few quid.

The game’s the thing

There’s been a lot of comparison, most of it probably not very relevant between Microsoft and Google’s streaming plans and the rise of Netflix. Considering everyone watches TV and only a small percentage play non-mobile games I’m not sure how helpful that is, but what does give me some optimism about the next gen is that if everyone’s using the same tech, more or less, then it will be the game’s that suddenly become the most important differentiator between everything.

Much has been talked about how Microsoft has dropped the ball with its first party games but they certainly seem to have changed direction on that in a hurry. And I don’t think Sony has been building its studio teams up just for the sake of a few BAFTAs.

Just as the quality of TV has increased enormously over the last few years, with different subscription services trying to tempt you in with their unique content, my hope is that this will happen with games too. It always has, to a degree, but if company’s claims of having the best graphics are going to become essentially meaningless then putting the games, and making them purposefully distinctive from their rivals, sounds like a very positive move forwards to me.

Simon Thomas has admitted he is wracked with guilt for not getting his late wife Gemma medical attention sooner.

In November 2017, Gemma, 40, passed away, just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

And Simon, 46, still struggles with Gemma not getting that crucial diagnosis sooner.

In an excerpt from his new book Love, Interrupted: Navigating Grief One Day At A Time, serialised by the Daily Mail, the former Sky Sports presenter looked back at Gemma’s ‘banging headaches’, exhaustion and bruising on her thigh in the weeks running up to her death.

The dad-of-one write: ‘Somehow, we ignored its early signs. Gemma had suffered from insomnia ever since having Ethan, and we put the bruise down to a nasty recent fall from a kerb.

‘In her final week, she went to the GP twice, but each time was sent home without even a blood test. Whenever I relive that time in my mind, the guilt is always there, nagging away at me.

‘I’m still asking myself those same questions: Why the hell didn’t you do something? Why didn’t you pick her up, carry her to the car and take her straight to hospital before it got so bad?’

While, Steve lost his wife Rachael only six months ago - after a long, gruelling battle with Breast Cancer. Gemma was diagnosed with cancer on 20 November after visiting A&E, and was immediately transferred to the Churchill Hospital in Oxford where she was hooked up to an aphresis machine, which ‘took her entire blood supply out of her body twice, and ended up filling two large bags with orange looking liquid — red blood tainted with an excess of white blood cells’.

Acute myeloid leukaemia is an aggresive form of cancer of the myeloid cells, with only 3,100 cases in the UK each year, mostly in people over 80.

Symptoms of the disease include unusual bruising and bleeding, feeling tired, losing weigh and breathlessness.

Gemma is survived by Simon and their nine-year-old son Ethan, and in his book, Simon also shares his grief at not having another child.

After discovering that Gemma had a low egg count, the couple tried IVF, but the only time the process worked, Gemma suffered a miscarriage at four weeks.

Former Blue Peter presenter Simon is now dating Derrina Jebb, with the star calling her an ‘amazing woman who has stood shoulder to shoulder with me in some of my darkest hours and has become a rock not just for me, but for my boy, too’.

Love, Interrupted: Navigating Grief One Day At A Time by Simon Thomas, is published by Trigger on 15 June at £12.99.

Ellen Page celebrates Pride month with topless portrait with wife Emma Portner

Ellen Page is celebrating Pride month with the love of her life, and a pretty awesome portrait to go with it.

The Juno actress marked the beginning of Pride in the US with a stunning picture with her wife of one year Emma Portner.

The black and white picture saw the couple topless and leaning in for a kiss, with Emma, a professional dancer, smiling and wrapping her arms around Ellen.

The beautiful image was captioned: ‘HAPPY PRIDE!!! Sending love.’

Ellen, 32, and Emma, 24, tied the knot in January 2018, after they are believed to have started dating in the summer of 2017.

Their marriage came nearly four years after Ellen came out during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time To THRIVE conference for LGBTQ youth, with the Umbrella Academy star recently opening up about being ‘very, very, very closeted’.

She told The Independent: ‘I mean, I barely touched a woman outside until I was 27 years old.

But she explained she ‘transformed’ overnight after coming out, admitting it was an ‘enormous relief’.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByNPGXMh9My/

‘And, I wasn’t OK, physically, at the time. I had a lot of physical stuff that was happening. I was very susceptible to panic attacks. And coming out, like [she clicks her fingers] it was as if I transformed overnight.’

Since coming out, Ellen has been vocal in the fight against homophobia, calling out Vice President Mike Pence’s support of conversion therapy in a blistering speech on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

And earlier this year, she hit out at Chris Pratt for attending ‘infamously anti-LGBTQ’ churches Hillsong and the Zoe Church.

Upon seeing a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter reading ‘Fresh from fasting, @prattprattpratt talks about his spiritual side’, Ellen wrote: ‘Oh. K. Um. But his church is infamously anti lgbtq so maybe address that too?’

The actress’s followers praised her for speaking out on the church, which has been accused of anti-LGBTQ behaviour in the past.

Hillsong’s leader Brian Houston has said that while gay people are welcome to worship at the church, and that loves all people, Hillsong doesn’t ‘affirm’ the gay ‘lifestyle’.

In a statement in 2015, Houston said: ‘Hillsong Church welcomes ALL people but does not affirm all lifestyles. Put clearly, we do not affirm a gay lifestyle and because of this we do not knowingly have actively gay people in positions of leadership, either paid or unpaid.

‘So if you are gay, are you welcome at Hillsong Church? Of course! You are welcome to attend, worship with us, and participate as a congregation member with the assurance that you are personally included and accepted within our community. But (this is where it gets vexing), can you take an active leadership role? No.

‘This won’t make everyone happy and to some, this stance may even be seen as hypocritical. We are a gay welcoming church but we are not a church that affirms a gay lifestyle.’

And in the Australia same-sex marriage vote, the pastor said: ‘Hillsong’s position on homosexuality and gay marriage has not changed and is consistent with Scripture.’

Meanwhile, pastor Carl Lentz said he admits he doesn’t know what Jesus would think about homosexuality, saying: ‘Jesus was in the thick of an era where homosexuality, just like it is today, was widely prevalent. And I’m still waiting for someone to show me the quote where Jesus addressed it on the record in front of people. You won’t find it because he never did.’

Chris, however, did not mention any of this when talking to Stephen Colbert, as he discussed how religion helps him deal with fame.

Ellen later clarified her comments, tweeting: ‘If you are a famous actor and you belong to an organisation that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed. Being anti LGBTQ is wrong, there aren’t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop. Sending love to all.’

She added: ‘If lgbtq+ people are expressing their pain, their trauma, their experiences… maybe just try and listen? Open your heart, stop being defensive and have compassion. ‘It’s beautiful and life changing feeling, empathy. Much love truly to all.’

My time on Love Island: the first day was the absolute worst

I was initially asked to meet the producers to go on the show in 2016 to enter the house in the last two weeks (Picture: ITV)

I was scrolling through my Instagram when I saw the new cast forLove Island 2019.

The first thing I noticed and was impressed by was the number of people of colour starting as originals. They’ve definitely made a conscious effort to rectify the colourism problems they faced last year.

Seeing the new line up made me reflect on my time on the show and the impact it has had on me.

I was initially asked to meet the producers to go on the show in 2016 to enter the house in the last two weeks. I had concerns about going in and becoming the Mr Steal Your Girl type, which I didn’t want to be.

I’m glad I didn’t take their offer because when it came to finding contestants for the 2017 series I was approached and asked if I wanted to meet the casting directors.

It couldn’t have come at a better time for me and I was at risk of being made redundant from my current job and I saw it as an opportunity to do something new. I didn’t really think I would be chosen but you got to have faith.

The casting process involved meeting producers and doing a video interview, which was sent to the execs. If they like you, you do another interview with them and then you have to do a psychological evaluation and medical examination.

I had met the doctor when I was in talks to appear on the previous year. I remember her saying, ‘You’re back, they must definitely want you on’, which gave me some added hope.

I started casting in February (which is very early compared to most people) and the call came in May. It felt like I was on a rollercoaster.

My first day in the villa was the worst of the entire experience (Picture: WENN)

Your personal chaperone takes you to a secret location to get press shots done. The final meetings with production happen and within a couple of days you’re getting flown out and into hiding.  You’re just waiting for day dot – the first day of the rest of your life.

For me it was the worst day of my entire Love Island experience.

I was the first boy presented to the women and no one stepped forward. I was thinking to myself, ‘what the hell have I walked into?’

I’m a super confident guy but that hit me really hard. I’m fortunate to be quite a calm and chilled person so I took it on the chin and just said to myself, ‘If I’m only on the show for a week, just make sure to enjoy yourself, it’s a holiday.’

It was raining the next day and no one was filming, so it gave us time to bond off camera. That day I felt like everyone’s favourite person, which just goes to show, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

I became the go-to person in the villa for everyone and it was definitely a highlight of the whole experience for me. I loved that these strangers found comfort in my personality.

I haven’t watched all of my series back because I want to remember it how I remember it but overall I think I was shown in a good light. I know the whole Blazin Squad thing started off as a punchline but in the end it was Chris and Kem who provided the comedic relief in the villa.

In the end I felt like I was seen as the wise old man figure of Love Island, like Gandalf or Dumbledore. It’s something I got a lot of love for on leaving the villa – I even wrote a love self-help book.

A new batch of islanders are heading into the villa (Picture: ITV)

My life changed hugely after leaving Casa Amor. I didn’t get made redundant but had the freedom to quit. The joy of being able to do that was immense and my life post Love Island just got better and better.

I released new music, went to the Baftas, went on tour and I’ve done multiple brand campaigns.

I wouldn’t say it’s all sunshine and rainbows as you have to deal with a lot of pressure you didn’t have to before like press, trolls, followers and how many likes your sponsored posts get on Instagram. For me though it has been a step up from not knowing what I would do after losing my job.

I came off the show in a relationship and I tried to make it work, but I think the reality was that we were trying to maintain something that wasn’t 100 per cent. But we were making it work because of the whole Love Island circus that surrounded us.

Having the whole world watching your relationship and having fans so focused on everything makes it hard to say, ‘I don’t think this is working.’ You can stay in it for the wrong reasons, leading to mistakes being made.

Saying that, you can also be matched up with the right person. Just look at Jess and Dom – they’re married and about to have a baby. It’s amazing.

Love Island can definitely do what it says on the tin… sometimes.

If I have one word of advice for the new cast: just be yourself. If you’ve got a character, be that person and don’t shy away from who you are. You’ve been picked for a reason so entertain people.

As per usual, much of the chatter around this year’s series of Britain’s Got Talent surrounded Amanda Holden’s chest, because in 2019, breasts still offend some people.

But following last night’s final, Amanda decided to switch it up and give the low necklines a night off.

The 48-year-old looked incredible in a black mini-dress as she attended the BGT after-party at London’s Soho House.

The slinky dress featured a one shoulder design, held up with one thin strap, and ruched detailing on the side.

Amanda paired the simple frock with curled hair and black strapped heels, and boy, was she working it.

The star had changed out of her finale look, as she had watched Colin Thackery be crowned BGT champion 2019 in a semi-sheer floral number.

Again, the judge opted for a low-cut neckline, after her risque wardrobe choices got the nation talking – with one dress even racking up numerous Ofcom complaints.

Yes, because of a bit of cleavage.

Amanda is more than happy with the attention, telling the Mail: ‘I love it that people are still talking about my tired old breasts and I’m nearly 50!

‘No one talks about Alesha Dixon’s – she’s got great boobs, by the way – and she’s eight years younger than me.’

And she previously joked about her husband Chris Hughes’ appreciation for her style, telling The Sun: ‘My t**s seem to become the show’s biggest talking point every year.

‘We’ve had plenty of complaints apparently, but none from home, let me tell you.’

While Amanda amped up the glam last night, it seems she wasn’t going too hard, as she was up at the crack of dawn for her new job this morning.

Amanda has replaced Emma Bunton on Heart Breakfast, and rocked up to the studio in Leicester Square bright and early, armed with celebratory cakes and a pair of sunglasses, perhaps to hide the effects of an afterparty bubbly.

Joining co-host Jamie Theakston, Amanda’s first guest was none other than her fellow BGT judge, David Walliams.

She was spotted in the crowd by eagle-eyed viewers during Britain’s Got Talent‘s grand finale, and it looks like Cheryl stuck around to celebrate with her pal Simon Cowell after the show.

The 35-year-old singer was pictured leaving the Hammersmith Apollo around the same time as her former X Factor boss after Colin Thackery was crowned this year’s winner.

Cheryl – who dropped her sassy new track Let You last week – tried to cover up a smile as she spoke to someone on the phone.

Meanwhile, Simon joked around with photographers through the window of his car.

Fans had been thrilled to see spot Cheryl during Jonathan Goodwin’s magic trick, with the mother-of-one looking anxious as she watched to see if Jonathan would make it out of a box of grain safely.

Cheryl had revealed on Instagram with a close friend that she would be in the crowd, explaining: ‘I’m in the way to see the BGT final. I’m excited to see some magic.’

The star’s friend explained that she wouldn’t be performing ‘because it’s a variety show’  and ‘they already have their music acts planned.’

Cheryl added: ‘They wanted variety acts and they already had their music acts booked before I released my new song, so I’m sorry about that.’

The finale saw Colin Thackery walked away as the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2019, becoming the oldest winner of the ITV series.

The singing Chelsea pensioner, 89, beat out competition from second-placed illusionist X and magician Ben Hart, who came in third.

His emotional performance of Love Changes Everything won him a spot at the Royal Variety Show and he was also handed £250,000.

It’s also been a good week for Cheryl as she thanked her fans for their positive reaction to her new track and its music video.

Replying to her fans on Twitter on Thursday night, Cheryl joked: ‘I wish I could reply to you ALLL .. but I have to wake up to a toddler .. 😂

‘Thank you from the bottom of my heart. So happy you’re enjoying #LetYou love you all. And thanks for waiting up with me.’

We were previously expecting the new single to drop in March, but it seems like pushing it back a few months was worth the wait.
