Speaking to Metro.co.uk ahead of the launch of season two, Laurie admitted: ‘The character of Aimee in series one, in the original scripts she was very, very low down in the mix.
‘And then one of my male producers said to me: “You know episode one of series one doesn’t pass the Bechdel Test?”
‘It’s this thing where you need two women on screen who talked to each other about something other than men otherwise your film is not feminist, and I was like “Are you kidding me?” that our episode didn’t pass that.
She added that the friendship between the two characters meant for some brilliant scenes, explaining: ‘Obviously [the rewrite] was way before we shot but it was quite far into the writing process.
‘It just sort of unlocked this thing where I was like: “Oh my God, I love watching them together”, and then going in to season two we just see more and more of that.
‘I’m so glad that that producer [pointed it out] and kind of angry that I have to give him credit for that!’
Laurie added that Aimee would otherwise have been a much smaller character in the series, admitting: ‘Yeah, I think so if that hadn’t have happened.
‘And actually now I feel like Maeve and Aimee are two of my favourite characters to see on screen together, and also one of my favourite things to write as well.’
Sex Education season two arrives on Netflix on 17 January.

The pop superstar saw that a man was struggling to collect his food as he had his dog with him, which wasn’t allowed in the restaurant, so offered to keep the pup company and watch him while his owner popped inside.
Sports journalist Rory Carroll replied to a viral tweet asking for people’s ‘most awkward or interesting celebrity interactions’ and revealed the story that struck envy into the hearts of every Harry stan.
Sharing a photo of Harry with his super-cute pup, Rory revealed: ‘I was outside a restaurant in Hollywood trying to pick up my take out order but couldn’t go in because I was with my puppy.
‘Harry Styles saw my predicament, tapped me on the shoulder and said he could watch Oscar while I went in. What a guy.’
Rory also told Metro.co.uk: ‘Harry was very kind and didn’t once look at his phone while he was watching Oscar – kept his eyes on him the whole time. He then graciously let me take a photo. Lovely guy.’
We’re not crying, you are…
I was outside a restaurant in Hollywood trying to pick up my take out order but couldn’t go in because I was with my puppy. Harry Styles saw my predicament, tapped me on the shoulder and said he could watch Oscar while I went in. What a guy pic.twitter.com/B5bQ7PQYdI
He also revealed that the encounter had taken place two years ago, on 17 January 2018, as he picked up his food from The Oaks Gourmet Market in Franklin Village.
The kind-hearted star even let him take a photo of him with great doggo Oscar, and to be completely honest, we can’t actually decide which one is cuter.
The Fine Line star spends a lot of his time in Los Angeles, but we didn’t know that when he’s not at the studio recording, he’s offering free dog-sitting services to Angelenos, too.
Harry Styles doing good deeds and providing wholesome dog content is the thing we didn’t know we needed but definitely do.
Anyone else whose dog Hazza’s looked after, feel free to share your pics and stories now – we’re pretty sure everyone agrees you can never have too many of these images.

Brad Pitt threw shade at all forms of Ocean’s Eleven sequels during an acceptance speech at the National Board of Review Award Gala.
Along with winning a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actor in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the actor went ahead and won another award for the same category during the ceremony in New York.
‘Be happy, stay healthy and not get into a financial situation where I have to do Ocean’s 14. We’ll see.’
Brad starred in Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, all of which were directed by Steven Soderbergh.
The only Ocean’s Eleven sequel to come out in the last couple of years include the all-female reboot Ocean’s 8 which stars Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, and Kate Blanchett.
Matt Damon, who starred in the originals, even made a cameo in the film.
This wasn’t the first time Brad made jokes about others while accepting awards.
He brought up the moment when Jack (Leo) sacrifices himself as Rose (Kate Winslet) gets on a door after the ocean liner sank.
Then Jack dies and we spent an eternity wondering why Rose didn’t just scoot over.
Since the 1998 movie was released fans have been adamant Jack would have been able to fit on that floatation device and lived to tell the great tale of the Titanic, and Brad is in agreement here (as he should be).
‘I also have to thank my partner in crime, LDC,’ he began. ‘Before The Revenant, I used to watch year after year, his co-stars win awards and get up and thank him profusely and I now know why.
‘He’s an all-star, he’s a gent. I wouldn’t be here without you, man.’
He added: ‘I thank you. But still… I would’ve shared the raft.’

*Spoilers: This article contains humongous spoilers for Vikings season 6: episode 7.
It’s happened. If you’ve got this far then you’re aware that the moment Vikings fans have been dreading came and shattered us all beyond belief: Katheryn Winnick’s Queen Lagertha has died.
While it’s not exactly a surprise – The Seer literally told us back in season four Lagertha would be killed by one of her sons, although we were kind of hoping for something with a bit more pop – the pain is real.
Fans may have been deeply underwhelmed by their heroine’s eventual demise, which saw her son Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) trip out and accidentally stab her in the night when she’s spent the past six seasons as the most ferocious warrior in Kattegat, but for creator Michael Hirst, Lagertha’s exit was the most poignant in Vikings to date.
Although, he did also warn there ‘more deaths’ to come.
‘Well, obviously the death of Ragnar was a big one for me, but on a personal level, I think Lagertha’s death had a deeper impact and was more emotional,’ he told Variety.
‘What was most important to me was to make sure that Lagertha’s death was as significant and powerful as it could be and was in the right position in the show.’
In terms of Lagertha’s story, I couldn’t ask for a better death,’ she admitted. ‘They didn’t want to kill me off after six seasons, but I was like, there’s a time and place, guys. Lagertha’s got to go.’
‘She’s not immortal, but I wanted an epic death. I wanted something amazing,’ she told TV Line.
Vikings continues next Wednesday on History Channel in the US and airs on Amazon Prime UK.

Dog The Bounty Hunter has defended his friendship with his son’s ex-girlfriend, amid tension with his daughter who is convinced they are dating despite his denials.
His daughter Lyssa Chapman is furious with the alleged romance and lashed out on Twitter, accusing Moon of ‘moving in’ on her family.
But Dog, real name Duane Chapman, has stated that nobody can replace his beloved Beth while confirming he does have a close relationship with Moon but they are just friends.
Speaking to Radar Online: ‘Moon is experienced. It’s just that. Who knows what my future holds, but right now I need her.
‘There will never be another Mrs Dog but that doesn’t mean I have to be so sad.’
He continued: ‘Moon has been a trustworthy and loyal friend to me for over 20 years. She has been with my family through many ups and downs.
‘All my children are grown and gone on their own, there’s no one left to help me!’
The 66-year-old continued: ‘Moon is experienced. It’s just that. Who knows what my future holds, but right now I need her. There will never be another Mrs. Dog but that doesn’t mean I have to be so sad.’
Lyssa revealed that Moon had previously dated one of her brothers – Dog has 10 sons – in her scathing Twitter rant.
She wrote: ‘If someone who met your family by dating your brother, tried to date your father after your step- mom died what would you do ? If you went to your mothers closet and saw she moved all her clothes and replaced them with her own, what would you do ? #ItsNotWhenOrWhyItsWho [sic].’
She added: ‘My dad is a GROWN ASS MAN. His money. His dynasty. But you can guarantee that my name is not going down in history as a person who supported this.’
Dog and Beth met in 1986 and dated on and off for a decade despite marrying other people within that period.
They eventually settled down together in 1995 and tied the knot on 20 May 2006 at a Hilton hotel in Waikoloa Village in Hawaii.
Earlier this week, Dog admitted he was ‘lonely’ and was open to dating again after Beth encouraged him to find love again before she died.

Bafta has confirmed that it is reviewing its voting system following the backlash of their nominations, which featured no people of colour in the main acting categories, or any female filmmakers nominated for best director.
The head of Bafta film committee, Marc Samuelson informed Variety that there be a ‘careful and detailed review within and outside the membership’.
After acknowledging that there was an ‘infuriating’ lack of diversity in the line-up, Samuelson said ‘everyone who has a view will be heard’, and any amendments agreed upon will be put in place for voting for the 2021 awards.
Currently, the voting is divided into two rounds. As Bafta states: ‘The winners and nominees in the majority of categories are voted for by 6,500 Bafta members, who are comprised of industry professionals and creatives around the world.
‘Members vote to decide the nominations from hundreds of films in round one, then vote for the winner in round two.’
Once the first nomination round is complete, all Bafta members vote on all the main awards with some specialist juries and chapters deciding the winners in certain categories such as best casting and best animated film.
According to Variety ‘there are various alternative systems possible, including versions whereby nominations are created through hybrids of all-member, jury, and chapters votes’.
Bafta was heavily criticised and branded ‘shameful’ by critics and audiences alike after it unveiled its predominantly white and male-centric nominations, and the BAFTAsSoWhite hashtag gained traction on Twitter.
Samuelson admitted that there was room for improvement within the organisation, adding: ‘There is absolute openness to change, and the organisation made clear its position on the noms and that it was not satisfied.
‘Change is required – what that is, is complex and needs calm, careful thought.’
Earlier this week, Emma Baehr, the director of the awards, had appeared to blame the industry for the ceremony’s lack of non-white nominees, saying: ‘We’d have liked to have seen more diversity in the nominations, it does continue to be an industry-wide issue.
‘I think more films need to be made, and entered, giving people a chance to see them. We’d absolutely like to see more diversity, but I also don’t want to take away from those celebrating today.’

Dancing on Ice professional Matt Evers has laughed off the complaints made by homophobic viewers over his same-sex routine with Ian ‘H’ Watkins.
The duo took to the rink to High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco and while it was well-received by most fans, (and even made John Barrowman cry) it did receive 16 Ofcom complaints.
Although luckily it didn’t get the duo down as they both seemed to shrug it off.
Taking to Twitter to respond to the complaints, dancing pro Matt appeared to just laugh it off as he posted a tweet with lots of laughing face emojis with the caption: ’16 out of 5.5 million… the odds are in our favor.’
‘The selection and pairing of contestants is an editorial matter for ITV,’ Ofcom told Metro.co.uk in a statement. ‘Our rules do not discriminate between opposite-sex and same-sex couples.’
New judge John was left in tears by the number and told H with tears streaming down his face: ‘I am [emotional], that makes me happy on a complete multitude of levels, just because of seeing two men who represent someone who is like me and to skate as well as you did, you’ve done it now, the nerves are out of the way.
‘We’ve shown that two men can perform and skate together so now do the tricks. I’m overwhelmed, I am almost speechless, it was just wonderful.’
After the performance, H told the judges: ‘[It was] emotional because I have wanted this for so long and it means so much to so many people and the world is ready for this.’
Matt added: ‘I just have to say thank you to the network, thank you to ITV and thank you to everybody at home that is accepting of this because this is normal.
‘This is absolutely normal.’
Dancing On Ice continues on Sunday at 6pm on ITV.

Nearly every day I would listen to Boy George as I strutted down the exceptionally long road to school.
He was one of the first people I saw embodying the look that I’d always wanted to explore, but had never felt like I could. His music and vision was an escape into a world that seemed like it could offer me freedom.
I’d grown used to perpetually waiting for my faves to end up disappointing me, and over the years, Boy George had moved from a fave to someone I’d rapidly skip when his voice would sound in my ears.
He just felt out of touch – kind of like that old uncle you have, who you know is just going to say something stupid soon. I was right.
He followed up his now-deleted tweet with another reading, ‘Leave your pronoun’s at the door [sic].’
So many people, myself included, used to look up to the Karma Chameleon star, but this lack of awareness is like salt in the wound.
It is a reminder that anti-trans rhetoric in the UK is so vociferous and normalised, that even our faves seem to find logic in its inaccuracy and fiction.
It takes away that slight childish glimmer of idolatry we have for the people we used to adore, when the world seemed so big and scary, and roots us back into reality.
It’s a reminder that even the people you once idolised can be the same people wanting you to sit in silence.
Many gay men, especially those that work within LGBTQ+ spaces, have had their whole careers propped up by our cold hard cash, often reaching a point of privilege where they essentially wash their hands of any other fights within their own community.
It’s rooted in misogyny – connecting ‘fishy’ to physically appearing that you have a vagina. (I’m sure you can make the connection there…). You don’t have to have a vagina, to be a woman.
She was rightly called out by Chiyo Gomes, drag performer and all round mega babe. Although The Vivienne has now apologised calling it a ‘mistake’, I’m not sure I believe it’s genuine, especially since she has gone on to tell her critics to ‘Go fight a REAL problem.’
On this occasion, too, she has reared her crown-wearing head. One comment in response to Boy George’s pronoun tweet read, ‘Every venomous deranged tweet I come across has a pronouned bio attached to it’ – to which The Vivienne replied, ‘This!!!’.
Non-binary and trans people of course tried to reason with Boy George, questioning his comments and explaining that using someone’s preferred pronouns is simply respectful.
I expect this won’t be the last time we see LGBTQ+ icons from past and present raising their voices and be publicly damning of trans of non-binary people
It was then that the giant hat wearing 80s star came back with, ‘Thanks for that but I have eyes and can mostly describe what I see’, implying that gender is of course, like a game of Catchphrase. If you think what you’re looking at is male, or female, then of course you can’t ever be wrong. Scream.
While I know his comments are nonsense, I hate seeing celebrities’ wade in and their comments being used as a barometer as to whether social movements are valid or genuine.
Why should a man with an increasingly dodgy past – including his stint in prison for falsely imprisoning a male escort – and as someone who spends an obscene amount on Twitter become a catalyst for trans rights to hauled over the coals again?
I expect this won’t be the last time we see LGBTQ+ icons from past and present raising their voices and be publicly damning of trans of non-binary people. Either way, I won’t be surprised.
But, in this case, I am disappointed. It’s an attack and reminder for young trans people – who struggle to find themselves in environments where people respect their pronouns – that other members of their own community also don’t respect them enough to gender them correctly.
Alas, I will remove Boy George from my strut playlists and find some other 80s star to fill their gap, before they probably say something awful and cause me to have to re-arrange my artfully created playlist AGAIN.
All I can think is: Boy George, why do you really want to hurt me?
Love Island’s winter series hasn’t even started yet and already bookies are placing their bets on Lewis Capaldi’s ex Paige Turley being this year’s winner.
The singer, who inspired Capaldi’s break-up anthem Somebody To Love, is about to head into the South African villa on the quest for love (and maybe a sweet fashion deal in the process).
And it seems that her pop star connections are already winning her favour with the bookies, becoming the favourite to win at 10/3 at Ladbrokes.
In fact, 38% of bet currently placed on the other girls at the moment have all been on her… which isn’t too shabby a way to start a programme where you’re in the running for a £50k prize.
Rochelle Humes’ sister Sophie Piper isn’t far behind though, second in line with a 3/1 chance of begging the cash.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: ‘With 12 Islanders confirmed, Paige is running away with things in the popularity charts and it looks as though Lewis Capaldi’s ex will be the one to watch.’
Twins Eve and Jess Gale are next up at 5/1 – with Shaughna Phillips at 6/1, Siannise Fudge at 10/1 and finally Leanne Amaning at 12/1.
But all that can change in a matter of days as the new islanders make their way to the South African villa for the first winter series of Love Island.
She quipped: ‘Hm, she might come with a side order of fame by association thanks to her ex but there’s a distinct lack of intrinsic confidence about her body language that suggests she could be the one that gets mugged off royally this year, producing an emotional response.
‘Her arms were tight to her body as she sat slightly hunched in her seat, listing the way she likes her ideal man to look by counting each point off on her fingers.
‘She looks as though she might have a history of being less-than-lucky in love and her rather floppy head movement as she spoke could signal a tendency to go from passive to argumentative quite quickly.’
Love Island starts this Sunday at 9pm on ITV2.

Christian Bale might be one of the best Batman actors ever, but his next role could see him playing the exact opposite as he returns to comic book movies.
Christian is rumoured to be being eyed up for the role of Thor’s uncle Cul, the god of fear, as the film will delve deeper into Thor’s extended family.
So far we have seen Cate Blanchett play his sister, Hela, in Thor: Ragnarok, and in the comics Cul joins Thor’s father, Odin, to retrieve Mjölnir, however in the film we will likely see Cul take on the quest alone as Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins died in the previous movie.
Before he decides whether to sign on to the Marvel flick, Christian is on the Oscar trail for his movie Ford V Ferrari.
Fans won’t have long to wait to see whether he does indeed get cast as Thor’s uncle, as production is reportedly set to begin this summer, with the movie slated for release in November 2021.
Neither Christian nor Disney’s reps have commented on the news as of yet, but fans will no doubt be keeping their eyes peeled for an announcement to come in the next few months.

It seems Beyonce might be Keeping Up With the Kardashians or, at least, a Jenner as she’s been caught reportedly liking one of Kylie Jenner’s Instagram photos.
It’s a well known fact that the Single Ladies singer follows no one on the social media app despite herself boasting a staggering 137 million followers making her one of the most popular celebrities.
So it’s suspicious then that fans claim to have spotted her name under Kylie’s latest Instagram post considering she doesn’t follow the reality star.
The picture in question sees Kylie wearing a bright orange netted jumpsuit while taking a selfie in the mirror of her walk-in wardrobe. Behind her are racks of designer handbags from Birkins to Louis Vuittons and everything in between.
But it seems Beyonce had a change of heart as she is said to have literally clicked the heart again and unliked Kylie’s photo.
Fans who say they saw Bey’s like began sharing screenshots of it positioned amongst Kylie’s other followers who double-tapped the snap.
And others who couldn’t resist a good laugh, joked that it was actually Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy who accidentally liked Kylie’s selfie.
So was Bey really lurking on Kylie’s Instagram feed? Just like elevator-gate and many other mysteries regarding Beyonce, we’ll probably never know.
Many have long wondered how Beyonce really feels about the Kardashians and Jenners, considering she and husband Jay Z famously snubbed Kim and Kanye West’s wedding back in 2014 creating a rift between the couples.
Although Jay Z and Kanye reunited last month at Diddy’s 50th birthday party, Kim and Beyonce were not pictured together.
It’s a surprise Beyonce has time to scroll through anyone’s Instagram right now, as she’s been busy celebrating Blue Ivy’s eighth birthday this week and also announcing the launch date of her new Adidas x Ivy Park collaboration.
The Formation singer blessed us with several incredible promo shots from the shoot earlier, one of which includes her riding a bike in her underwear and a hoodie.
Maybe Kylie will return the favour and hit the like button?

The UK’s biggest video game retail chain is to close 40 of its 300+ stores, including sites in Watford, Leicester, and Glasgow.
In not the most surprising news ever, GAME has announced it will close dozens of stores in the UK, with 13 sites already having had notice served.
GAME hasn’t offered a complete list yet but the stores in Mansfield, Canterbury, Watford, Glasgow Fort, and Leicester are all confirmed to be closing.
Derby, Norwich Chapelfield, Lakeside, Bexleyheath, and Carmarthen have also been served notice and are amongst 14 sites owned by property firms Intu and NewRiver.
‘We are working closely with landlords throughout the UK to ensure that we do not have to vacate the 40 locations which could lead to a number of job losses. However, we are facing a challenging retail market and GAME with its extensive retail footprint, needs to restructure and landlords need to work with us in setting realistic, fair rents’, said a GAME spokesperson.
Whether that means the closures might not be permeant is unclear, but like many retailers the cost of rent has been the deciding factor in whether they can afford to keep bricks ‘n’ mortar stores going.
As digital downloads increasingly take over from physical sales it’s a problem that’s also been suffered by US chain GameStop, whose future has frequently been brought into question.
The end of a generation, when sales of new consoles begin to slow, is a particularly difficult time for video game stores and GAME will no doubt be hoping they can hold on till the end of the year, when sales of the next generation consoles should offer a boost.
Victoria Beckham may not be able to make Weetabix without cremating it, but her exceedingly healthy and active morning routine is making us seriously review eating leftover Christmas chocolate for breakfast.
The fashion designer and former Spice Girl shared details of what she ingests first thing on Instagram, and it includes two table spoons of apple cider vinegar, a cup of hot water and lemon, and a bowl of chia seeds, preferably made by her daughter Harper.
Apple cider vinegar is reportedly a favoured breakfast tipple for fellow stars including Jennifer Aniston and Miranda Kerr because it lowers blood sugar, kills bacteria and aids weight loss. Water and lemon is meant to help digestion.
VB revealed that eight-year-old Harper had been in charge of breakfast this week – combing chia seeds with almond milk, which she topped with a raspberry.
‘So sweet and kind. Thank you Harper Seven,’ the star wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of Harper’s healthy concoction.
Sadly, Victoria’s attempt at making 14-year-son Cruz’s Weetabix breakfast wasn’t as successful after she admitted on social media that she burned it and it was too ‘tough’ for Cruz eat.
It’s surprising that she has time to do anything what with making her children breakfast, completing the school run and working out twice.
‘I get up quite early, around 6am, and do an hour in the gym before the kids get up, then I give them breakfast and David or I take them to school,’ she recently told The Sunday Times.
‘I’ll then fit in another hour’s workout before I go to the office. I’m very disciplined, I have to be. It’s really the only time in the day I get to myself.’

Love Island’s newest posh addition Ollie Williams has been slapped with a sex ban by his family – or face losing his multi-million pound estate.
Ollie, 23, is heading into the South Africa villa this Sunday but has been told under no circumstances can he head under the covers for raunchy behaviour in front of the camera.
Quite literally the Lord of The Manor, Ollie is the heir to Cornwall’s Lanhydrock Estate, with his father Andrew a Lord and his family worth a staggering £15million.
So that’s a massive risk to take for a fumble under the bedsheets on national telly.
‘The Lord of the Manor’s son said: ‘Dad said he would write me out of the will. I said to him, ”OK, brilliant”,’ he told The Sun. ‘Mum was like, ”Oh my God”.’
‘I said to them I wouldn’t do it. I can’t see why that would change. My grandmother will be watching the show and that’s what I have at the back of my mind,’ Ollie added.
‘She hadn’t previously seen it but she was down for Christmas and my mum insisted on showing her some episodes’.
Ollie bragged about his heirship in his introduction video ahead of his Love Island debut – saying that he was looking for a woman with grouse land… so good luck there, considering most are from Essex at the moment.
‘Best chat up line I’ve ever used is, ‘Do you know Polzeath beach in Cornwall? I own it.’ That’s it. Chat up line, done,’ he bragged.
He added that it would ‘depend on the ex’ if he was a good boyfriend or not.
Love Island starts this Sunday at 9pm on ITV2.

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special has received hundreds of complaints from viewers after they used the word ‘f****t’ in one of the scenes – although the BBC is still defending it.
Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) took to the karaoke at The Dolphin for their biannual tradition of a singalong – and opted to sing The Pogues’ Christmas classic.
However, when it came to the offensive line where Kirsty declares Shane a ‘cheap lousy f****t’ – which has become a divisive topic since the 80s and in terms of acceptable language – the lyric went uncensored.
The BBC confirmed it received 866 complaints from viewers and has since issued a statement defending the use of the word.
They exclaimed that ‘Fairytale of New York is a well-established, much-loved Christmas song which tells the story of a troubled couple in 1940s New York’.
The statement began: ‘The descent of their relationship is reflected in the increasingly abusive and offensive terms they use to address each other; insults which are intended to reflect the language that such characters might have used in that era. The origin of the word includes a definition which describes it as a contemptuous and antiquated word for laziness, and the author of the song has cited this inference behind his inclusion of that line.
‘While the word ‘f****t’ is now widely acknowledged as having the potential to offend, the song never suggests or implies that this is, or was ever, an appropriate way to address another person, nor does it link it to homosexuality.’
It continued: ‘Nessa and Bryn were seen singing the original lines and we can assure you there was no intention to offend viewers. We understand that some people will find it offensive in any context but we also recognise that the song is widely played and enjoyed in its original form. Ofcom have previously stated that they feel it is “unlikely that audiences would widely perceive [the song] as a serious attempt to denigrate the homosexual community”. ‘
During the moment the line was sung, Gavin (Mathew Horne) even acknowledged its potential for offence by doing a cheeky ‘oooh!’ to wife Stacey (Joanna Page).
Many felt it was inappropriate for the show to choose to keep it in – especially considering that they could’ve worked around it if they wanted.
As a result, some were thrown off by the near-perfect reunion special and it put them off enjoying the episode as a whole.
Ahead of the scene airing, Ruth Jones defended the decision and told The Sun it was a ‘different climate’ and said: ‘We have to remain true to the characters, to who they were.
‘Characters in Gavin & Stacey are kind and big-hearted, I believe. So I think no one is going to be intentionally hurtful.
‘But by the same token, they’re not necessarily going to be completely politically correct or be aware of political correctness.’
The song, which is played altered and unaltered across the UK on radio and TV across the Christmas season, has been a long-held source of contention for fans
Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas Special is available on BBC iPlayer and Britbox.

Netflix has gone and dropped their new cheerleading docuseries Cheer, which is bringing its viewers to tears.
And one of the stand out stars is highflyer and allrounder team member Gabi Butler – who has already found fame on YouTube and Instagram.
Her channel sees the star dish up advice to fellow cheerleaders, alongside a number of workout videos for her subscribers to follow along to at home.
So while we get ready for a six-hour binge session, we thought we’d check out the internet sensations socials to get to know the girl behind the pompoms.
It seems as though cheerleading is life for the 21-year-old influencer, who is currently promoting her new show.
‘It will follow Navarro College as we fought to try and win another National Championship last year,’ she explained to her followers alongside the trailer amongst other squad snaps.
And while she lives the high life while posing on the beach in her cheer gear, the star doesn’t stray away from some of the hardships she’s faced in life.
Cosying up to one of her team members in the sea, Gabi wrote: ‘Through all those hard times where I felt like I couldn’t or the times I felt weak or not good enough….
‘I look back at pictures like this and say “I’m so glad that I never gave up.”‘
It appears Gabi has a huge support network around her too, who she calls her ‘honays’ – and we can’t say we don’t want in on her squad.
Not to mention her American Footballer boyfriend Jordan, who she recently thanked for being her: ‘Best friend, bf and goofball [sic].’
But while Cheer takes off of the popular streaming platform, it seems fans are concerned Gabi’s parents are a bit ‘full-on’.
‘Wow. This Gabi girl’s parents are doing themselves NO favors,’ one tweeted while another said: ‘I feel like Gabi’s parents are putting too much pressure on her…….. idk.’
Others had similar feelings: ‘Can Gabi’s family let her LIVE and be a damn teenager instead of treating her like a money machine.’
But Gabi has since defended her family by dropping a statement online.
‘I want to clear something up,’ she wrote: ‘My parents are amazing and have always been there for me. Every time I have made money from cheer opportunities it has gone into my own account.’
The star continued: ‘My father already runs several successful businesses and has showed me how to create my own. They much me to be my best and I am more thankful than ever for their love and support.
‘They have helped shape me into the person, athlete and coach I am today. So please stop with the negativity towards them. They are my biggest support system and have helped me to be on the top of my game.’
Gabi ended her posted with: ‘That is all. Peace and love everyone and thank you again for all of the support.’
Cheer is available to stream on Netflix now.

Carol Vorderman has ripped into Wendy Williams for appearing to mock cleft lips while discussing Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix’s facial features.
During the Hot Topics segment of The Wendy Williams Show this week, Wendy was discussing the controversy over Beyonce sitting down during Joaquin’s standing ovation at the Golden Globes last weekend.
The talk then turned to how Wendy, 55, finds Joaquin ‘oddly attractive’ before making a remark about the scar above his lip.
‘He’s got that good nose that dips way down and he’s happy with, so am I,’ Wendy said initially complimenting his features.
‘And when he shaves off his moustache he’s got a hairline fracture. He’s got one of those – what do you call it? Cleft lip pallette.’
She then lifted her top lip to try and mimic the cleft lip.
‘I find it to be very attractive,’ the talk show host added as the audience laughed.
Carol, 59, was particularly offended by the joke due to her work with cleft lip charities and slammed Wendy via Twitter.
The former Countdown star wrote: ‘As Ambassador for Cleft Lip and Palate Association @CLAPACOMMUNITY I really am disgusted by this @wendywilliams.. Mimicing a cleft lip, and making a joke about it, is disgraceful.
‘Have you any idea the pain and operations a child with cleft must go through as they grow? Please RT.’
Carol thanked a Twitter user, Matt Groark, for ‘bringing [it] to her attention’ after spotting their tweet criticising the American talk show host.
Groark had commented: ‘For a solid 10 seconds she used her finger to mimic a cleft lip while the audience laughed. Imagine how my 5 year old would take it if he saw it? @WendyWilliams
‘I only speak on it bc I’m personally informed and educated on the topic. #bebetter [sic].’
Calling for a mature discussion about the issue, Groark added: ‘We obviously don’t want people bashing her like we are seeing in the responses. We want awareness and education.’
Earlier in her debate about Beyonce snubbing Joaquin’s standing ovation, Wendy described the Joker actor as having a ‘nuttiness’ about him.
Metro.co.uk has contacted Wendy’s reps for comment.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is returning in just a couple of weeks and has skipped out on a traditional trailer in favour of going full camp in a music video.
Honestly, enjoy having this stuck in your head until 24 January, folks, it’s catchy.
Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) takes centre stage in the spooky-in-a-fun way video, which drives the sass up to 11 as the men in her life bare their chests and get tied up in chains as she walks around them dressed like a dang queen.
The song, Straight To Hell, serves as a handy little recap on what’s been going on with the teen gang since we last saw them.
Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) is currently trapped in in the depths of hell, shirtless and chained, dancing around laser beams (at least in the music video) in a summoning circle.
We’re pretty sure he’d fit in in a few of London’s nightclubs like that – but we digress.
Heading on down there to save him, Kiernan recruits her friends and ex-boyfriend Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch) to go and get him, but she’s got a fair amount of daddy issues to be dealing with when she does.
You see, last time we saw them in 2019, Nick’s body was taken over by Satan himself – a Satan who is actually Sabrina’s father. Enjoy that minefield when they’re reunited.
She’s also got to deal with Caliban (Sam Corlett) the crowned Prince of Hell who isn’t happy with Sabrina having her own claim to the throne.
First look clips cut into the music video reveal that things aren’t exactly rosy on earth either, with a team of people appearing to head into Greendale with their own attempts at resurrections.
But hey, at least Harvey is starting a band, so that’s something to look forward to.
With Mary Wardell (Michelle Gomez) also embracing her inner and outer evil with a sense of fabulous fashion choices as well, we know it’s all go in the new season.
And honestly, if it’s half as batty as this music video suggests, we’re all here for it.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 3 launches January 24 on Netflix.

The BBC have thrown their support behind Naga Munchetty after viewers complained about her ‘aggressive’ interview with Rishi Sunak.
Back in December, the BBC Breakfast presenter was interviewing the Conservative MP about his party’s plans to recruit 50,000 more nurses.
Naga stated: ‘Okay, you’re recruiting 31,000 new nurses and retaining a further 19,000…’
But before she could continue, Rishi tried to explain: ‘Yes, which adds up to 50,000 new nurses.’
However, the host shut down his comment and swiftly moved the conversation on, adding: ‘No, it’s not. But you know what? I have heard this argument so many times from so many broadcasters, we will just move on.’
Since then, 134 people have complained to the network about the way she handled the situation, calling the 44-year-old ‘rude or aggressive’.
This read: ‘The interview focused on the Government’s priorities in the Queen’s Speech, including spending on the NHS and social care, and how realistic promises of improvements are, given the resources being made available.
‘Naga Munchetty questioned Rishi Sunak closely on the differences between the real terms increase and the headline £34 billion figure being invested in the NHS, as well as the 100 days pledge on social care.
‘She intervened at points in order to elicit direct answers to her questions and move the interview on, which is the role of the presenter in any interview.’
It continued: ‘We believe her approach, while firm, remained polite.
‘All of our presenting team maintain the same firm but fair standard of interviewing irrespective of the person or political party that is being represented.
‘We do not believe Naga’s interview was rude or aggressive – in our view Rishi Sunak was able to answer the questions in a timely manner.’
Responding to the president’s tweets which called for the women to ‘go back’ to the ‘places from which they came’, Naga recalled her own experiences of being told to ‘go home’ in the UK.
‘Everytime I’ve been told as a woman of colour to “go home”, to “go back to where I’ve come from,” that was embedded in racism,’ she said.
After widespread criticism from the public and her peers (including even Piers Morgan) the ruling that she broke guidelines was reversed by the channel’s Director-General, Tony Hall.

The Masked Singer judge Jonathan Ross let slip that he has tried to trick workers on the show to tell him who the celebrities are behind the masks.
The comedian who has joined Rita Ora, Davina McCall and Ken Jeong on the judging panel revealed the ‘level of secrecy is second to none’ on the show.
He exclaimed: ‘None of us had any idea. Even though we would occasionally fish for a clue, or try to trick the people working on the show who we thought might know across the production team.
‘We didn’t even know who knew. That was all a secret as well. There was a tiny group of people who knew.
‘The celebrities would only be allowed to walk around in their costume. They would leave their dressing room in costume. Even getting into their cars, they had a mask on. I’m hoping the secrecy is kept up.’
As it stands only two celebrities have been unmasked in ITV’s trippiest reality show to date – although that doesn’t mean that we haven’t tried to guess who they are.
EastEnders icon Patsy Palmer revealed herself to be Butterfly after treating us to a stunning cover of You’ve Got The Love; while former Home Secretary Alan Johnson may have walked like an Egyptian he sounded like a literal migraine and was subsequently exposed as the Pharoah.
Denise Van Outen appears to have accidentally let slip that she is Fox after forgetting to delete a tweet confirming her love of teapots, despite revealing on the show she’s been collecting them for the past 30 years, and we are certain that Unicorn is John Barrowman and that Charlotte Church is Queen Bee.
The Masked Singer continues Saturday at 7pm.
