Jeremy Clarkson and James May got a mixed reaction from a South African audience after a controversial exchange in which he referred to Oscar Pistorius’ shooting of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The pair, alongside Richard Hammond, were performing their live tour, formerly called Top Gear Live, in Johannesburg when Clarkson seemingly shot an audience member by accident with a paintball gun.
Clarkson is heard quipping that he thought the audience member was a burglar, which got a few laughs from the audience, but it all got a bit tasteless when James May asked if the audience member had been in the bathroom.
Clarkson and May initially giggled with each other over the joke but, as it became clear the audience generally wasn’t responding that well, May insisted that they moved hurriedly on.
