Charlotte Awbery has had a weird few weeks. She’s gone from a jobbing singer around pubs and bars to a viral sensation covering Lady Gaga at a London Tube stop, to now performing for Ellen DeGeneres.
The British native was featured in a challenge on YouTube, where she was asked by a random stranger to finish the lyrics to Shallow from A Star Is Born.
What came next no-one expected. With the blowdry of Farrah Fawcett and pipes that would put Gaga herself to shame, a star was actually born and now Charlotte has travelled Stateside on the invitation of Ellen DeGeneres.
The homegrown singer appeared on the show to sing her star-making cover, as well as to sit down with the comic to discuss her stratospheric rise to viral fame.
It seems that it was a bit serendipitous, as the singer admits she was actually on her way ‘to meet a friend’ when she got featured on the clip, which has now been viewed for than 60 million times.
‘I was literally on my way to meet my friend,’ she revealed. ‘I can’t believe it. I can’t believe I’m sat next to you.
’60 million [views]?! I didn’t even know that.’
Ellen also informed Charlotte that she now has picked up a lot of fans – including a certain Ariana Grande, who was one of the 400,000 people to follow her on Instagram.
‘I followed her back!’ She enthused. ‘One of my friends saw it, so I followed her back.’
All in all, the attention has seen this jobbing singer – who performs at pubs and weddings – into a bonafide star.
‘I do weddings, I do pubs. I do bars, restaurants,’ she revealed. ‘[I’ve been gigging] for 15 years.’
And this is Ellen we’re talking about, so obviously there were some gifts involved – including a year-long pass for free travel on the Underground (and £10,000).
Also, we’re not saying that the Just Dance hitmaker is intimidated by the new queen of pop Charlotte but…she has auspiciously just announced the release of her new single Stupid Love. We smell competition!
