BBC Breakfast fans went to town on a GP who made a blunder during a handwashing demonstration on today’s programme.
Presenters Charlie Stayt and Rachel Burden were joined by guest Dr Rosemary Leonard, who attempted to show audiences how to keep coronavirus at bay with good hygiene
However, the demonstration left many viewers concerned as they saw Dr Rosemary cough into her hands before grabbing a bottle of hand sanitiser and pressing down on the pump.
She then proceeded to wash her hands in a jug of water and soap, explaining to viewers at home what they should be doing.
‘It’s the most important thing do in terms of stopping the transmission of this virus,’ Rosemary said. ‘And we were chatting earlier, the previous SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak was stopped by good hand-washing.’
After she coughed, Charlie pointed out: ‘Hold on a second, you just coughed, right? So the correct procedure is what?’
Signalling to some paper towels, he continued: ‘Should you now use one of these?’
But Dr Rosemary went straight for the hand sani, leaving some totally baffled.
‘She coughed into her hands, touched the hand sanitiser, then proceeded to clean her hands. Bit late the virus would now be on the sanitiser,’ observed one concerned fan on Facebook.
Echoing a similar sentiment on Twitter, another wrote: ‘The Dr coughed in her hands, then grabbed the hand sanitizer to sanitize her hands… contaminating the bottle.’
Putting your hand in front of your mouth to cover your cough is actually not the best way to do it as the germs will then spread onto everything you touch with your hands,
It’s advised that coughing into the crook of your elbow is better as the chance of spreading your germs drops significantly.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One.
