There’s still over two months to go until Eurovision, but it looks like punters are zeroing in on a favourite – despite eight countries yet to confirm their entries.
Iceland have jumped to become the bookies’ favourite, after Daði Freyr and Gagnamagnið were selected as Iceland’s entry on Saturday night.
Daði’s funky keytar song beat out rock band DIMMA and their track Almyrkvi in the super-final of Söngvakeppnin.
And now, the band’s song Think About Things has been shortened to 4/1 to dominate in Rotterdam this year, according to Paddy Power, after the track quickly went viral.
The song – written about Daði’s 10-month-old daughter- is accompanied with quirky dance moves, with the group all wearing green jumpers with pixelated versions of themselves on the front.
Throw in a wind machine blowing Daði’s hair during the bridge, and we can understand why people are obsessed.
Even before Söngvakeppnin, Gladiator star Russell Crowe expressed his love of the song, sharing the video to Twitter, and since then, everyone from Rylan Clark-Neal to Dara O’Briain has said they’re a fan.
Iceland’s favourite status is pretty impressive, seeing as the country hasn’t won out of 32 attempts.
They have come second twice, in 1999 and 2009, but failed to qualify for the final in between 2015 and 2018.
However, they broke the top 10 – and made many a headline – with anti-capitalist BDSM enthusiasts Hatari and their song Hatrið mun sigra (Hate will prevail) in 2019.
Daði and Gagnamagnið have a fight on their hands at Eurovision, though, as Romania are hot on their heels at 6/1.
Over the weekend, Roxen chose Alcohol You as her song for Rotterdam, and the ballad is already making waves.
Meanwhile, Lithuania’s act The Roop and their song On Fire is also at 6/1 currently.
And Sweden and Russia are the fourth and fifth most popular acts, at 11/1 – despite not announcing who’ll be representing them yet.
Like we said, there’s a while to go until Eurovision – the grand final takes place on 16 May – so this could all change.
Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Russia, San Marino, Sweden and Switzerland are still to confirm their entries.
