ITV’s nail-biting psychological drama Liar returns to TV tonight and the long awaited explanations to the unanswered questions left at the end of the first series will finally start to be explored.
Nearly two and a half years since the finale of season one of Liar aired on ITV, the thriller starring Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd is landing back on our screens.
In series one we followed the story of Laura Nielson (Joanne
Froggatt), a recently single teacher who agreed to go on a date with
charismatic surgeon Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd), only to wake up the morning
after realising she had been drugged and assaulted by the man.
A serial rapist, Andrew was careful not to leave a crime scene at Laura’s flat, meaning when she reported the assault she struggled to be believed, which crushed her and destroyed her life as she knew it.
Determined to have the truth about Andrew revealed and with
the help of other victims, Laura relentlessly worked to expose the surgeon and
father for the criminal he was – something which almost cost Laura her life.
The finale of series 1 saw a tense stand-off between Laura and Andrew, after she drugged him and drove him to the Kent Marshes in a desperate bid to exact revenge for the pain he had caused her.
In a nail-biting twist, Andrew escaped and would have killed
Laura, had it not been for the timely arrival of a detective looking into
Andrew’s alleged exploits.
What happened to Andrew at the end of Liar season 1?
At the end of series 1 of Liar, a news report was heard,
stating that the truth about Andrew Earlham’s crimes had been revealed via the
tapes he stashed in a former patient’s garden shed – but he had not been arrested
because he had been missing for three weeks.
It was then revealed to viewers that Andrew had been
murdered – his throat cut and body abandoned by an unknown killer deep in the
Kent Marshes.
While the characters were unaware of Andrew’s fate at the end of series 1, they’ll find out pretty quickly what happened to him in the new season, as the second series will see Andrew’s body discovered and a murder investigation opened in the first episode.
The seaside community is rocked by the brutal murder and
Laura, who has been trying to move on from her ordeal and settle into her new
relationship with Ian, will find her world turned upside once again because of
Andrew – even after his death.
As a recent victim of Andrew’s and someone who was pivotal in revealing his crimes, Laura quickly becomes a person of interest in the case and other characters likely to be seen as suspects include another of Andrew’s victims, DI Vanessa Harmon (Shelley Conn) and her protective partner Jennifer Robertson (Jill Halfpenny).
Liar returns to ITV tonight, Monday 2 March 2020, at 9pm.
