The moment Hamilton fans have been waiting for is almost upon us – as it’s just a matter of weeks now until the film version makes its way on to Disney Plus.
Hamilton the movie – based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning stage musical – was originally meant to be hitting screens in 2021, but the streaming service announced last month that the release date has been brought forward, giving us all something to watch before the cinemas start to open up again.
But just when is Hamilton released on Disney Plus UK – and for those who haven’t yet come across it, just what is it about?

When is Hamilton released on Disney Plus UK?
We don’t have to wait very long at all for the release of Hamilton on Disney Plus UK – as it’ll be dropping on to the streaming platform on Friday 3 July.
The movie version of Hamilton is a little different from other big-screen adaptations of hit musicals – as rather than being a film remake of the show, this is a straight adaptation of a live performance of the show on Broadway, filmed over three nights in 2016.
As an added bonus, it also gives fans the chance to see its creator Lin-Manuel Miranda in the title role – along with many of the original cast members.
‘It was the week before the principals started to leave, I think it was the week before Pippa (Phillipa Soo), Leslie (Odom Jr.) and I left, and Ariana DeBose from the ensemble… And it just captures that moment in time so beautifully,’ he explained.
‘Watching it brings me right back there with that incredible, once-in-a-lifetime company. And I just can’t wait for you to see it.’
What is Hamilton about?
Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States, and features a very diverse cast, recalling the America of the past with the America of today.
The music of the show is powered by hip-hop and R&B, as well as more pop stylings and showtunes.
The musical originally opened on Broadway in 2015, and went on to win 11 Tony Awards from 16 nominations – falling just short of the record set by The Producers in 2001.
