Omar al-Sharif, the legendary star of Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago has passed away at the age of 83.
The actor’s agent told Metro.co.uk Sharif had suffered a heart attack and died this afternoon in hospital in Cairo
The Egyptian star of stage and screen shot to fame as Sherif Ali in David Leans 1962 sweeping epic Lawrence of Arabia. Sharif was nominated for an Oscar for the role.
Earlier this year it was announced that Sharif was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
He went on to win a Golden Globe three years later for his leading turn in Doctor Zhivago.
