Clueless is the quintessential ’90s teen movie, but it’s not a teenager any more.
This week, Amy Heckerling’s outstanding high school comedy turns 20. Just before Clueless arrived, back in July 1995, it could easily been discounted as just Another Teen Movie, dumb and disposable.
But it only took one viewing to realise this cinematic student was made of sterner stuff. Clueless has stood the test of time far greater than any of its ilk, partly because it is in an ilk of its own.
Yes, it uses the well-worn background of locker-filled corridors and cafeteria cattiness, but Clueless elevates itself above its genre with its love of language.
