The Goonies is three decades old. You hear that? How many of you feel like cashing in your pensions now?
For a generation, The Goonies evokes a wave of nostalgia – of what it was like to be a kid, to have adventures, and to believe that you really could save the day.
It also has jokes about vomit, and a statue that loses its penis.
But why is The Goonies so enduringly popular? Well, for a start, it has pirates, and pirates have never gone out of style.
Presumably Americans were baffled as to why we found the name ‘One-Eyed Willy’ amusing (much as The Last Airbender would run aground some twenty-five years later, for similar reasons).
