Acclaimed film and television actor Richard Johnson has died, his family have confirmed.
The 87-year-old, whose acting credits include The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and Kartoum alongside Laurence Olivier, passed away after a short illness.
He also had roles in TV dramas including Silent Witness and Midsomer Murders and was prominent on stage and screen from the 1950s.
It was previously claimed that Johnson was originally approached for the role of James Bond for the very first movie in the franchise before the part went to Sean Connery.
He married his wife Lynne in 2004 and is survived by his four children.
Other credits include the 1963 movie The Haunting and more recent films including Scoop and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
