Was The Magician’s Apprentice a good episode of Doctor Who?
At this stage, it’s impossible to say. On the one hand, nothing much happened. It was uneven and bitty.
On the other hand, there are plenty of episodes of Doctor Who that are more about buildup than they are about the action.
The Magician’s Apprentice was about establishing a new series, a new idea and a new side to the Doctor than it was about getting things done.
I can’t help thinking that we’re not going to be able to really assess this one until we’ve seen where it takes us, so rather than talk about that, I’d rather focus on all the things the episode did well. And if you look, there were loads.
