David Beckham fights back tears as he gives emotional speech about Philippines typhoon victim at UN

David Beckham was on the verge of crying when he spoke at the United Nations about a four-year-old girl who died in the Philippines typhoon.

The ex-footballer and father-of-four had to fight back tears as he recounted the story of Viana, who was swept away from her father’s arms during the disaster in 2013.

Viana’s mother, father and her sister Venus, eight, all survived typhoon Haiyan, which killed 6,300 people.

Becks met Viana’s family last year on a trip to the Philippines in his role as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.

He said: ‘On the night the typhoon hit the family were on their roof trying to protect themselves.
