Once upon a time, in 1994, a little movie called Four Weddings and a Funeral came out – perhaps you’ve heard of it?
After all, it’s only regarded as one of the best British comedies of all time.
Not only did the critics love it, but the Oscar-nominated, Bafta and Golden Globe-winning Four Weddings made a staggering $245.7million (£185.05million) at the box office, which is particularly impressive when taking into consideration the fact that a comparatively little 2.8million (£2.11million) was spent on making it.
Four Weddings is such an enduring classic, that members of the original cast and crew got back together, 25 years after the film first came out, to make a sequel for Red Nose Day which was aptly titled One Red Nose Day And A Wedding.
The film aired during the Red Nose Day telethon, and helped Comic Relief raise a total of £63million this year.
In the wake of this reunion, a question springs to mind: What else have the original cast been up to since they were in Four Weddings and a Funeral?
Hugh Grant
In Four Weddings, Grant played the hapless protagonist Charles, who falls hopelessly in love with a woman with a fiance, whose love he seems destined never to truly have.
Still a big name in the film industry, you’ll have probably seen him around in films like About A Boy, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Love Actually and Notting Hill.
Andie MacDowell
Model and actress Andie MacDowell played the free-spirited Carrie, the other half of the will-they-won’t-they couple at the heart of the film.
Since Four Weddings, she’s been in the likes of 30 Rock, Cuckoo, and Magic Mike XXL, having previously appeared in Groundhog Day, St. Elmo’s Fire, and Sex, Lies and Videotape.
Dame Kristin Scott Thomas
If her title doesn’t speak for itself, Dame Kristin has kept very busy since her turn as Fiona in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
She’s been seen in Fleabag, The Party, Only God Forgives, and Mission Impossible, among much more.
James Fleet
Fleet, who played Tom in Four Weddings, went on to act in well-known things like Sense and Sensibility, The Vicar of Dibley and The Phantom of the Opera.
Simon Callow
Callow played Gareth, the jolly half of a tragically ill-fated gay couple in Four Weddings in 1994, and as such, he was one of the few original cast members who was not present in the Comic Relief sequel,
Since 1994, you might have seen him in Shakespeare in Love, Phantom of the Opera and A Room with a View.
John Hannah
John Hannah played Matthew, the surviving member of the Gatthew (Gareth and Matthew to non-stans) coupling, who delivered a speech at Gareth’s funeral that still brings many to tears.
After Four Weddings, he’s appeared in the The Mummy franchise, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Spartacus.
Charlotte Coleman
Charlotte Coleman was the quirky and sweet Scarlett in Four Weddings, and went on to act in Beautiful People and How Do You Want Me alongside Dylan Moran.
Coleman tragically died in 2001 at just 33 of a bronchial asthma attack. In her memory, the New London Performing Arts Centre began the Charlotte Coleman Scholarship in 2003.
Rowan Atkinson
Even though he played the comparatively small part of Father Gerald in Four Weddings, to say that Rowan Atkinson is a household name would be putting it mildly.
Since 1994, he’s been Johnny English, as well as reprising his role as Mr. Bean, and been in films like The Lion King, Love Actually and Rat Race.
David Bower
Bower played David in Four Weddings, and since then, appeared in Doctors and Casualty.
