Andrew Scott is set to take on new TV series, His Dark Materials, and we are living for it.

Fresh off the heels of sending everyone into utter meltdown as the ‘hot priest’ in Fleabag, the 42-year-old has been cast in the BBC / HBO drama.

He will be playing Colonel John Parry in the series – dad of Will Parry (Amir Wilson).

And the Colonel will have an important role, helping to protect the alethiometer from Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson).

Andrew joins an all-star cast, with James McAvoy and and Lin-Manuel Miranda also taking part.

The official His Dark Materials Twitter account confirmed the news, sharing a behind the scenes snap of Andrew and Lin Manuel in what looked to be a make-up trailer.

‘”So I have summoned you here, and you are to fly me northwards” When Lee Scoresby met Jopari. @Lin_Manuel #AndrewScott #BehindTheScenes #HisDarkMaterials,’ they captioned the snap.

And fans understandably went wild for the news.

‘There’s too much awesome in this show,’ one replied. ‘It’s going to kill people with the awesomeness.’

‘How can the casting of #HisDarkMaterials just get better and better? I am so excited about this. Couldn’t imagine a better John Parry,’ another commented.

While an impressed fan added: ‘Dead. I died. This whole cast are amazing. So much talent. I can’t wait to see this on screen.’

However, there is a downside to his casting, as unfortunately Andrew won’t be making an appearance right away.

In fact, his character pops up in the second series, not the first, so we might have a while to wait until he’s back on our screens.

We’ll always have the aforementioned Hot Priest to tide us over.

The books follow the adventures of Lyra and Will Parry as they explore parallel universes inhabited by witches, armoured bears, and daemons.

Otto Bathurst is at the helm of the upcoming series, and revealed the adaptation will be ‘twisted and modernised’ to make it accessible to audiences.

‘[His Dark Materials] has been interesting, as we are twisting that a little bit,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

When asked how the story has been twisted, he backtracked slightly, adding: ‘We’re not twisting it, but we are modernising it a little bit, making it feel a little bit more accessible.

‘The books are quite Victoriana in their fantasy, but it’s pretty on the nose – there are a lot of fans of that book and it’s a great book so why mess with it?’

He has a point.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Andrew Scott’s reps for a comment.
