The Devil May Cry series has been going for 18 years now and has picked up a lot of story baggage along the way, but getting up to speed on all the characters is still relatively easy.
Picking up several years after the events of Devil May Cry 4, the fifth entry follows a mysterious man known as V who hires Dante to solve a series of demon attacks across the world.
Nero meanwhile, who has his own demon hunting agency, is searching for a hooded individual who stole his original robotic prosthetic arm, called the Devil Bringer.
Both their causes bring them together to Red Grave City which is believed to be the centre of the demon attacks, where a powerful demon named Urizen hopes to become king of the Underworld.
But what brought them up to this point? And who on earth is Nero and Dante? Here’s a catch-up guide with all the characters from Devil May Cry 5.
Dante
Dante is the main protagonist throughout the Devil May Cry franchise, and who has had cameos in everything from Marvel Vs. Capcom to Shin Megami Tensei. Along with superhuman powers, he’s known for wielding his dual pistols, Ebony and Ivory, and having a particular fondness for pizza.
Dante is the second son of the demon Sparda and the human Eva, and the younger twin brother of Vergil. Working as a private investigator and devil hunter at his Devil May Cry demon-hunting agency, Dante’s sole drive is to seek vengeance against those who corrupted his brother and killed his mother.
The main figurehead behind this is evil demon lord Mundus, who ordered Eva’s death and corrupted Vergil (who was known back then as Nero Angelo). Mundus is the main antagonist in the original Devil May Cry, and was sent screaming back into the Underworld after a confrontation with Dante.
Fast forward to the end of Devil May Cry 4, which saw Dante kill alchemist Agnus who opened a hellgate to unleash demons upon the land. The final battle had him team up with Nero, Vergil’s son, to defeat Order of the Sword’s leader Sanctus and the Savior as they threatened to take over the world.
Dante entrusts Vergil’s trademark sword Yamato, once wielded by their father Sparda, to Nero following the final confrontation. The pair go their separate ways, with Dante returning to his Devil May Cry agency to pick up another call from a customer.
Nero
Nero is introduced as a playable character in Devil May Cry 4. While it’s never been addressed in the games, Capcom has confirmed he’s the son of Dante’s brother Vergil. Raised in Fortuna, Nero has been inflicted with a physical manifestation of his demonic power through one of his arms, the Devil Bringer, which possesses superhuman strength and can harness the power of other items.
In Devil May Cry 4, Nero serves as a Holy Knight in the Order Of The Sword; a religious group who fights to protect demons and worships Dante and Vergil’s father Sparda. Nero, however, is forced to fight against the group after he and Dante uncover they’re part of a conspiracy to conquer the world through humanoid statue the Savior.
After being relatively ashamed of his Devil Bringer arm throughout, Nero comes to accept its powers – seeing it as a tool to be used against evil. His arm, however, is cut off by a mysterious foe, meaning Nero has a replacement prosthetic arm in Devil May Cry 5 called the Devil Breaker.
Nero is also armed with Yamato, after he reawakened its power and it was given to him by Dante. Yamato is an incredibly powerful sword once wielded by Sparda, which was passed down to Nero’s father Vergil as a keepsake. After going his separate ways, Nero has now set up his own mobile Devil May Cry demon-hunting branch and has officially become a hunter.
V
V is a mysterious new character introduced in Devil May Cry 5 and is the game’s third playable character.
His motivations are unknown at the start of the game, but he sets the plot in motion by contacting the Devil May Cry agency to deal with a new demon infestation. He’s also a big fan of poems.
Lady
Lady, also known as Mary, is a devil hunter who first appeared in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. The game was a prequel to the first Devil May Cry game, following the complex relationship between Dante and his brother Vergil.
She was the daughter of Arkham, who allied with Vergil to revive the unholy tower Temen-ni-gru constructed by devil worshippers. As Arkham became obsessed with wielding the power of Sparda, he sacrificed his wife, and Lady’s mother, Kalina Ann, in a ritual. This prompted Lady to turn against her father, teaming up with Dante and Vergil to kill Arkham once and for all.
After these events, Lady joined Dante’s Devil May Cry in her path to becoming a devil hunter.
Trish
Created by Mundus and bearing a striking resemblance to Dante’s mother Eva, Trish is a key character who has appeared across the franchise and was a playable character in Devil May Cry 2.
Originally created to lure and kill Dante, Trish eventually joins Devil May Cry to fight demons alongside him after Mundus was defeated in the first game. The pair go through an uneasy journey of trust, before, at the final battle, she betrays her creator and assists Dante in destroying Mundus.
In Devil May Cry 4, Trish adopts the persona ‘Gloria’ in order to infiltrate the Order Of The Sword, where she’s made an executive of the Holy Knights. After Sanctum and the Savior are defeated, Trish returns with Dante and Lady to Devil May Cry to tackle their next mission.
J.D. Morrison
Debuting in the Devil May Cry: The Animated Series, J.D. Morrison is the man who brings Dante his job requests and often drives the demon hunter around.
With his appearance in Devil May Cry 5, it marks the first time a character from the animated series has transitioned into the games. While Morrison is distinctly human in his lack of supernatural abilities, he’s a trustworthy rock for Dante, and introduces him to V.
Nico
Nicoletta Goldstein, aka Nico, is a new character for Devil May Cry 5. She’s an expert craftswoman who assists in Nero’s branch of the Devil May Cry devil-hunting business. She also helps to create a number of cybernetic prosthetics for Nero, enabling him to hunt demons after the Devil Bringer was cut from his arm.
She’s also the granddaughter of Nell Goldstein who created Dante’s Ebony and Ivory pistols. Her father Agnus, who was killed by Dante, abandoned her and her mother Alyssa when she was three-years-old.
Kyrie
Debuting alongside Nero in Devil May Cry 4, Kyrie is the younger sister of the Order Of The Sword’s Holy Knights, Credo.
More crucially, she’s a childhood friend and love interest for Nero. At one point, she’s captured by Angus, and later Sanctus and the Savior, being used as bait to lure Nero in Devil May Cry 4. She’s soon rescued, and despite discovering he’s able to wield demonic powers, reveals she wants to be by his side in the future.
Nero and Kyrie now live together, with the latter often used as a vulnerable target by demons as leverage over Nero.
Vergil
Introduced as the main antagonist in Devil May Cry 3, Vergil takes a different path from twin brother Dante after the death of their mother. While Dante chooses to embrace his humanity, Vergil guns for the opposite and revels in his demonic heritage.
It’s revealed in a secret ending in Devil May Cry 3 how Vergil is corrupted by Mundus and becomes a dark angel called Nelo Angelo, as featured in the original Devil May Cry. After numerous fights, he’s eventually defeated by Dante.
Vergil’s appearance in Devil May Cry 5 has been teased in recent story trailers for the game, but Capcom has never said how, and in what capacity, Vergil will appear…
