Singer and TV entertainer Val Doonican, who was as well known for his novelty sweaters as his songs, has died aged 88.
His family confirmed that he passed away ‘peacefully’ at a nursing home on Wednesday night, although the cause of his death was not given.
The singer – who was born Michael Valentine Doonican in Waterford, Ireland, in 1927 – was a regular fixture on the small screen for over two decades, thanks to The Val Doonican Show which ran from 1965-1986 on BBC TV.
He also enjoyed chart success with his recordings, reaching the top ten with five of his albums in the 1960s.
