True Detective director Cary Fukunaga left Stephen King’s It because the studio ‘didn’t care’ about creativity

True Detective director Cary Fukunaga has opened up on his shocking decision to leave the long-gestating remake of Stephen King’s It, admitting that producers at Warner Bros and New Line Cinema were only interested in ‘archetypes and scares’.

‘I was trying to make an unconventional horror film,’ Cary told trade magazine Variety. However he revealed that didn’t ‘fit into the algorithm of what [the studio] knew they could spend and make money back on based on not offending their standard genre audience’.

Cary also revealed that there were never any concerns over budget but that it ‘was the creative that we were really battling. It was two movies. They didn’t care about that’.
