Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who was a mixed bag.
He was landed with occasionally tedious stories, unnecessary character development and questionable revisionism.
Good ideas were squandered, and ideas which should never have been greenlit took centre stage.
But there were also flashes of brilliance and there’s plenty to look forward to in his next one.
Doctor Who series nine will begin on BBC One on Saturday, September 19, with a two-parter by Steven Moffat called The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar.
What might we hope for in series nine? Here’s my personal wishlist.

1. Ian Chesterton
Ian was a fantastic companion, and Clara teaches at his school.
It really is time, surely?
If we can’t get William Russell, someone from the classic run would be lovely.
