James Corden had David Beckham on the verge of tear when he led the footballing legend to believe a hideous artwork was being erected at LA Galaxy in his likeness.
Corden captured the moment his pal David came face-to-face with a golden statue with a ‘massive chin’ and a ‘huge arse’ for The Late Late Show last week, and the footballer could barely believe his eyes.
The soccer legend, who played for the team for five years, didn’t hold back about the ’embarrassing’ likeness to an artwork that he said would make his children cry if it was permanently placed at the front of the stadium.
As the artwork was unveiled in his honour, David said: ‘It doesn’t really look anything like me. Look at my eyes. You know, the only thing that’s good about it is the hair and that’s about it.’
David was shown an initial design for approval in Chicago, but cheeky Corden then asked his props department to create a replica with crossed eyes and a sizeable chin.
The shocked footballer continued: ‘There’s catching me in motion, and then… I mean, look at my chin. Look at my bum, look at my arse. It doesn’t look like that.’
David said the ’embarrassing’ statue looked more like Stretch Armstrong and chastised his famous friend Dave Gardner for laughing while he panicked about the formal unveiling.
‘I really don’t see how this can go out,’ David declared. ‘There’s no way that can go out of the front of the stadium.
‘My parents are coming over from London, my wife’s coming. It’s lucky my kids aren’t coming because if my kids were to see this, I think they’d just cry.’
Speaking to the creator, who was luckily being impersonated by comedian Maz Jobrani, David added: ‘I don’t want to offend you in any way but this is such a big thing for me.’
Just as David threatening to walk out of the meeting, a forklift knocked the statue over – much to David’s delight.
‘I think you’ve probably done me a favour there,’ he told the forklift driver before Corden popped up from behind the cameras.
Despite having many choice words for mate Corden, the relief on David’s face said it all.
