Everything JK Rowling has said about Dumbledore’s sexuality, without it actually being on screen

JK Rowling and Dumbledore
Rowling’s comments about Dumbledore’s sexuality have annoyed many (Picture: Dave Allocca/Starpix/REX/Shutterstock)

JK Rowling is known for dropping in random facts about the wizarding world, years after the books were published – from Nagini actually being a human (huh?) to Lupin turning into a werewolf being a metaphor for HIV (double huh?).

And don’t even get us started on the lack of toilets in Hogwarts.

But her latest titbit of information has annoyed people, rather than giving them a warm and fuzzy sense of nostalgia.

During a feature on the Blu-ray DVD of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the author confirmed that Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald had an ‘intense’ sexual affair.

Rowling said: ‘Their relationship was incredibly intense. It was passionate, and it was a love relationship. But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know, you can believe you know.

Dumbledore and Grindelwald had a romantic relationship (Picture: Rex)

‘So I’m less interested in the sexual side – though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship – than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationships.’

While we are all here for more prevalent depictions of LGBTQ+ love, sex and relationships on screen, that’s the problem – it wasn’t on screen.

Many have called out Rowling, pointing out that there’s no point saying Dumbledore was gay in interviews and featurettes when his sexuality is entirely brushed under the carpet in the books and the films – including the brand new franchise of Fantastic Beasts.

And considering how desexualised the Hogwarts headmaster is in magical canon, Rowling has spoken about his sexuality an awful lot.

JK Rowling reveals Dumbledore is gay

The author was speaking at a fan event at Carnegie Hall in New York after the publication of the Deathly Hallows in October 2007, when she was asked if Dumbledore had ever fallen in love – leading to her revelation that he was gay.

She said: ‘ I always saw Dumbledore as gay.

‘Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald…. Don’t forget, falling in love can blind us. [He] was very drawn to this brilliant person. This was Dumbledore’s tragedy.’

Albus Dumbledore
Rowling said that Dumbledore was gay after the book series ended (Picture: AFP/AFP/Getty Images)

Rowling then claimed that in the script for The Half-Blood Prince, she had to tell screenwriters to remove a line where Dumbledore reminisced about a girl.

She said: ‘I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter: “Dumbledore’s gay!”‘

Rowling fights back against the trolls

Following the books, we all took it as canon that Dumbledore was gay, and Rowling wasn’t about to let anyone say otherwise.

After a reader told her on Twitter that they couldn’t ‘see’ the wizard as a gay man, Rowling fired back: ‘Maybe because gay people just look like… people?’

Duh.

We’re promised Dumbledore’s sexuality will be prevalent in Fantastic Beasts

In November 2016, Rowling seemed to affirm that while Dumbledore’s sexuality was brushed over in the books and movies, it would be explored in Fantastic Beasts.

Speaking at a press conference, she said: ‘I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship.

‘You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn’t always the sage…We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned… Watch this space.’

Actually, no, it won’t be

Dumbledore entered the picture in the second Fantastic Beasts film, The Crimes Of Grindelwald, where we would see the relationship between the young teacher (played by Jude Law) and Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

But before its release, director David Yates said it would ‘not explicity’ be made clear that Dumbledore was gay.

David Yates
David Yates said Dumbledore’s sexuality wouldn’t be made explicitly clear (Picture: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)

He told Entertainment Weekly: ‘But I think all the fans are aware of that. He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in love with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other.’

We need it on screen, people!

Jude Law suggests the storyline is yet to come

Perhaps the films will redeem themselves.

Jude Law told EW: ‘ I suppose the question is: How is Dumbledore’s sexuality depicted in this film? What you got to remember, this is only the second Fantastic Beasts film in a series and what’s brilliant about Jo’s writing is how she reveals her characters, peels them to the heart over time. You’re just getting to know Albus in this film, and there’s obviously a lot more to come.

‘We learn a little about his past in the beginning of this film, and characters and their relationships will unfold naturally, which I’m excited to reveal. But we’re not going to reveal everything all at once.’

Kylie Jenner’s friendship with Jordyn Woods hit a bit of a snag after the model kissed Khloe Kardashian’s ex, Tristan Thompson, at a house party.

But it doesn’t look as though the mum-of-one is any closer to letting her former BFF back into the fold.

In fact, it has been claimed the 21-year-old hasn’t really spoken to her pal at all since her infamous appearance on Red Table Talk, at the beginning of the month.

Jordyn went on Jada Pinkett Smith’s show to share her side of the story, but it reportedly had the opposite effect on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star.

Insiders told TMZ the pair ‘haven’t made any progress in mending their fractured relationship’, and have barely spoken since the show aired.

Kylie is thought to be more certain than ever that Jordyn ‘wronged Khloe’, with sources adamant that, while they could still be friends, their bestie days are well and truly over.

Which is awkward as they have an official make-up collaboration based on their bond.

Jordyn made headlines after she was accused of sleeping with Tristan Thompson last month, after heading back to his for a house party – while he was still dating Khloe Kardashian.

The Cleveland Cavaliers player, who shares daughter True with the reality star, denied all claims at the time, but the 21-year-old later alleged he kissed her as she left his home.

It was stated Kylie had been finding the situation hard to deal with, with her famous family worried over how she would ‘cope’ without her pal.

And it looks like she’s been spurred on to widen her circle of friends, after all the drama.

‘[Kylie] is still upset about the Jordyn situation, although she seems to be doing much better,’ an insider told People.

‘She has been socialising more and trying to find a bigger circle of friends that she can be close with.

‘After the Jordyn drama, she realised that relying on just one friend is not the best idea.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Kylie and Jordyn for a comment.

Only Fools And Horses star John Challis backs petition to have Del Boy statue placed outside tower block home

Del Boy’s gone gold (Picture: UKTV)

Only Fools And Horses star John Challis, aka Boycie, has backed a petition calling for a golden Del Boy statue to be placed outside Nelson Mandela house.

The beloved 90s sitcom used Harlech Tower in Acton, West London, to portray Del Boy’s tower block home Nelson Mandela house, even though the show was set in Peckham.

There are now plans, however, to have Harlech Tower demolished in a £650 million regeneration of the area, which will see over 3,500 homes constructed.

Explaining his reasons for backing the petition from TV channel Gold to commemorate the tower’s sitcom history, Challis said: ‘The towers carry a lot of nostalgia for many of us, not just the cast, but everyone who has enjoyed watching the show over the years.

‘While we don’t want to stand in the way of any progress being made, we do want to commemorate the towers’ long-standing connection to Only Fools And Horses and its British comedy legacy.’

The TV channel have even concocted mock-up plans of how they could commemorate Del Boy’s crib, including a plaque, bench, and a gold statue.

The mocked-up plaque reads: ‘This plaque commemorates Nelson Mandela House, the much loved home of Derek & Rodney Trotter in Only Fools And Horses, 1981-2003.’

There’s even a golden version of Del Boy’s Reliant Regal van knocked up in golden form, which is quite something.

The petition requires 1,500 signatures for it to be brought forward to Ealing Council’s consideration.

Only Fools And Horses is having a nostalgic resurgence following the release of a new West End musical version, starring Paul Whitehouse.

Have Valve been outmanoeuvred by Epic Games?

Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human have joined Control and The Outer Worlds as the latest PC games exclusive to Epic’s game store.

The developer of Nuclear Throne has shown little sympathy for Valve, as Steam continues to lose exclusive titles to Epic Games’ rival online store.

Vlambeer co-founder Rami Ismail has told Valve it ‘sucks to be you’, during an interview in which he discussed the growing list of exclusive games being signed up by Epic Games.

Ismail criticised Valve’s claim that Epic was being ‘unfair’ to consumers and suggested that they had simply been ‘out-businessed’.

‘There’s an entire generation of indie game developers that got wiped out because of an algorithmic change in Valve’s recommendation algorithms and they said, ‘Well that’s just what the data said’’, Ismail told website PCGamerN.

‘Well here’s what the data said, it said that Metro Exodus is not on Steam because the deal Epic gave [developer 4A Games] was better. To call that unfair, but call all they do just data, it couldn’t have been a funnier statement from that perspective.’

‘You can tell that they’re a game developer at heart’, added Ismail. ‘They’re iterative and that’s sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. I hope they stay around because seeing them iterate through the problem of ‘S***, we have a competitor now’ – hopefully it’ll be hilarious.’

The comments came as Epic Games, makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, added a host of new timed exclusives to their store, including the much anticipated The Outer Worlds and Remedy Entertainment’s Control.

Quantic Dream also announced that PlayStation 4 titles Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human would also be exclusive to Epic’s store for one year.

Vlambeer’s own titles are still available on Steam, although they did announce yesterday that Nuclear Throne and Super Box Boy are coming to the Nintendo Switch, as well as new title Ultra Bugs.

Princess Diana and Freddie Mercury’s trip to the Vauxhall Tavern will be explored in the new series of Urban Myths.

There has been much speculation surrounding the tale of Princess Diana’s trip to the Vauxhall Tavern.

Rumour has it that her A-lister buddies, Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett, dressed the royal up as a man and took her on a night out to the infamous venue.

Whether or not the story actually happened still remains a mystery, however many people have discussed the evening including the comedian Cleo Rocos.

It’s said Freddie helped sneak her into the venue (Picture: WireImage)

Writing in her book The Power of Positive Drinking, the star claimed that the group had been enjoying champagne at Kenny’s home, when Diana asked about their plans for the evening.

They told her that they were planning heading out to one of the most iconic gay venues in London – and well the mother-of-two is said to have jumped at the chance to join them.

Dressing her up in Kenny’s clothes, Rocos claimed the star looked like ‘a rather eccentrically dressed gay male model.’

She added in her memoir: ‘Diana and Freddie were giggling, but she did order a white wine and a beer. Once the transaction was completed, we looked at one another, united in our triumphant quest. We did it!

Cleo Rocos spoke about the speculation in her book (Picture: Getty Images)

‘When we walked in… we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute.

‘But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it.’

Now, years after the night is said to have taken place, the comedy show Urban Myths will explore the speculation in the upcoming series.

The episode will star the likes of Mathew Baynton (Kenny Everett), David Avery (Freddie Mercury), Richard Gadd (Gareth) and Sophie Rundle (Princess Diana).

All eight episodes available on-demand on Sky. The full season will be released as a box set 10 April on Sky Arts and NOW TV.

This inaugural event brought together people from the world of sport, entertainment, media, and business to unite behind a promise to tackle the issue of modern day human trafficking and slavery. Hosted by Sky presenters Sarah-Jane Mee and Jim White, the Sport for Freedom Gala Dinner includes guests such as jockey AP McCoy OBE; Denise Lewis, former British Olympic Gold Medal winner; BBC Strictly star, Brendan Cole; Al Bangura, former Watford FC player and Sport for Freedom Ambassador who was trafficked from Africa to the UK at the age of just 14yrs old

Simon Thomas has admitted he came close to ‘giving up’ twice after the death of his wife Gemma.

The former Sky Sports presenter was left devastated when his wife of 12 years Gemma died aged 40, just three days after she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia – an aggressive blood cancer – in November 2017.

The couple shared son Ethan and Simon has said that the nine-year-old saved him from giving up on life.

Speaking at a panel on grief organised by the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal, the 46-year-old said: ‘I’ve been watching Ricky Gervais’ After Life, and it’s about this guy’s journey after losing his wife to cancer. He has a dog, I have Ethan. It actually made me feel better, because I’ve never crunched up a Weetabix into a pint glass and drank it with water.

‘I saw part of myself in him, but the difference is, I had an eight-year-old boy, and I had a decision to make – do I give up on life? And I’m going to be totally honest, there were at least two occasions in the last 16 months where I nearly did. It was too hard, I couldn’t find any joy in life even though there was this amazing boy in front of me.’

Simon continued: ‘But it was always him and the thought of him that, when I reached the lowest of the low, stopped me going one step further. I’ve heard from a number of people who’ve been through this, in whatever form, who have come close to giving up, because we’re trying to find a reason to live again.

Simon Thomas with son Ethan
Simon credited his son Ethan for him carrying on (Picture: Instagram)

‘I had it right in front of me, but sometimes I’d lose sight of that. We decided we were going to drive forward and find life again.’

The presenter was speaking on the panel, which also featured filmmaker Dustin Lance Black, comedian Cariad Lloyd, illustrator

Gary Andrews, Marie Curie’s senior children’s and young people’s counsellor Ann Scanlon and pallative care doctor Dr Mark Taubert and was chaired by Anneka Rice, at London’s Hospital Club, in honour of Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal.

And he compared Gemma’s sudden death to a ‘car crash’, admitting the month’s after her passing were a ‘haze’.

Simon – who is in a new relationship with Derrina Jebb – said: ‘I don’t think I coped very well. I went to a grief counsellor from about week three onwards, I go every Friday and I find it massively helpful. Grief is painful, whoever you’ve lost at whatever time of life, it is horrible. But what happened with us – Gemma is ill for about a month, we don’t know what’s going on. She goes into hospital on the Monday night, we find out she’s got a blood cancer of some sort, on the Tuesday, we’re told she has acute myeloid leuakaemia, which we’ve never heard of, but it’s incredibly aggressive, she’s only had it for about four weeks. And she’s gone by the Friday.

‘My counsellor said that what we went through was akin to being in a car crash. There was no time to prepare, there was no time to have final conversations, no time to ask Gemma “how do you want me to bring our boy up?”

‘I think back to where I was a year ago, and ask anyone, I was a mess. I was a maelstrom of emotions, one minute I was on the floor crying, the next down the end of the garden shouting blue murder, stopping joggers in their tracks. It was like a car crash. It was only after four or five months that I started to emerge, it was a total haze.’

However, he addressed how he has started to heal with the help of Ethan, saying: ‘Where is Gemma now? She’s in the eyes of my boy, in how he reacts to me, how he speaks words of kindness – he’s almost become a mother figure to me. He tells me off for getting stressed at drivers on the school run, he’s becoming like her.’

Cyberpunk 2077 - it's basically Blade Runner: The Game
Cyberpunk 2077 – but what’s the other game?

The makers of The Witcher 3 have confirmed they have two major games currently in development – Cyberpunk 2077 and another mystery game.

David Castaneda in The Umbrella Academy (Picture: Netflix)The Umbrella Academy star David Castañeda says season two will be 'insane'

Everyone knows that CD Projekt RED are currently working on Cyberpunk 2077, a brand-new action role-playing game that has still never been given a release date.

What’s less well known though is that the company has another AAA game underway as well, which is assumed to be releasing after Cyberpunk.

However, nobody has ever said what the second game is or if it’s part of an existing or new franchise.

According to new statements made to investors, CD Projekt has reemphasised that both games will be out by 2021, but while the mystery game was previously described as a story-driven role-playing game this time there’s no description at all.

CD Projekt RED has previously ruled out The Witcher 4, but have hinted that they might be interested in some kind of spin-off. Which is the best, and only, guess that can be made as to what the secret game is.

Technically there’s nothing to indicate that the secret game won’t come out first but CD Projekt RED has already confirmed they’ll be at E3 in June with Cyberpunk 2077, which would be an obvious venue to announce a release date.
Although the game is assumed to be appearing on next gen consoles it may be released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 first, similar to how Rockstar Games handled Grand Theft Auto V.

When Jimmy had finished his hosting segment, Holly confessed that she was impressed with his skills, telling him he was ‘very good.’

‘Did I get the job?’ asked the funnyman, to which the This Morning duo both agreed that he had.

Viewers were divided over Jimmy’s presenting debut (Picture: Twitter)

However, viewers were divided by Jimmy’s takeover with one hoping that he never takes over the show permanently, writing: ‘Don’t even think about replacing Phil with Jimmy.’

Meanwhile another wanted to hear more from the comedian, urging: ‘Can Jimmy Carr do some hosting on This Morning please?’

Elsewhere on the show, Coronation Street star Bhavna Limbachia defended Rana Habeeb’s shock death after LGBTQ backlash and Danny DeVito dropped by to discuss his upcoming Disney film.

Macaulay Culkin jokes about Michael Jackson sex abuse allegations in front of daughter Paris

Macaulay Culkin has joked about Michael Jackson’s sexual abuse allegations on stage – in front of his daughter, Paris.

Wade Robson and James Safechuck accused the Thriller singer of abusing them when they were children, as part of HBO documentary, Leaving Neverland.

And the Home Alone actor, who was close friends with the late star, has mocked their claims during the latest instalment of his Bunny Ears Podcast Live show.

During a segment with Weird Al Yankovic – on stage at the Largo at the Coronet, in LA, the 38-year-old told the comedian: ‘I’m going to ask you a very serious question: what was your relationship like with Michael Jackson?’

‘Um, mostly platonic. I met him two or three times, he was pretty sweet to me’, Al replied as they both started laughing.

‘Sounds amazing, he sounds really cool, yeah…,’ Macaulay responded. ‘I will say he was a huge, huge fan of yours.

‘Yes, he always had your videos kind of playing constantly. There you go, validation. Praise. Hail, Caesar!’

Paris was in the audience for Macaulay’s show (Picture: Getty)

Michael’s daughter, Paris, was in the audience – donning a pair of bunny ears – along with her boyfriend, Gabriel Glenn.

According to reports, the couple didn’t speak to anyone at the event, and disappeared backstage with Macaulay’s girlfriend soon after.

‘She didn’t talk to anybody and just kept her head down scrolling through her phone while smoking at a little table in the corner,’ they told The Sun.

‘Paris barely spoke to Gabriel and looked pretty downcast before sneaking backstage with Macaulay’s girlfriend Brenda Song.’

The 20-year-old has had turbulent few weeks, after Leaving Neverland aired – which raised sex abuse allegations against her dad.

She has furiously denied reports she had been taken to hospital after attempting to take her own life over the weekend, and later that she was ‘refusing to go to rehab’.

And the model claimed the rumours have emerged because she didn’t have a ‘crazy reaction’ to the show.

As fresh reports in TMZ stated those around her were encouraging her to ‘get help’, she told her 1.35million Twitter followers: ‘They didn’t get the crazy reaction they wanted from the doc, and a chill, mellow reaction doesn’t sell stories so why not lie and create a story that does sell? Pathetic’.

The Walking Dead’s Samantha Morton doesn’t see Alpha as a villain: ‘Everything she does comes from a place of sincerity’

Samantha Morton plays Alpha in The Walking Dead (Picture: AMC)

Alpha might be one of the most terrifying characters in The Walking Dead history, but actress Samantha Morton doesn’t see playing the Whisperers leader as a villainous role.

The 41-year-old actress has given The Walking Dead fresh life playing the feared bald-headed leader, making an entrance with severed heads, uncomfortable gravely whispers, and a troubled mother-daughter relationship.

While the natural tendency would be to rank Alpha alongside past villains like Negan, The Governor, and residents at Terminus, Morton has a different outlook on the character.

‘For me personally, I don’t see her as a villain,’ Morton said. ‘I see that I’m playing this woman. I see that everything she does comes from a place of sincerity and intent.

Alpha might be one of the scariest characters in the show’s history (Picture: AMC)

‘Whether she’s mad or not. Whenever you look through history at people that do horrific things, they seemingly think they’re on the right side of God, or doing them for the right reason.

‘So I’m not going: “Mwah-ha-ha-ha! I’m off to play this baddie in The Walking Dead!” Nothing like that. Her intentions are very focused and clear. But you still don’t mess with her.’

She added: ‘What I love about it is, it’s a woman. That’s awesome. These parts are normally written for men. It’s about time – not in the show, but in society, that we’re seeing more: “OK, you can play this role… Yes, we will put you in this part.” And it’s great.

‘So I hope people respond to Alpha anyway, I really do, in the way we would like them to.’

Samantha Morton shaved her head for the role (Picture: Karwai Tang/WireImage)

Morton also completely shaved her head for the role, after shunning the idea of having a bald cap.

‘There were discussions about a bald cap,’ Morton said. ‘But in the heat of Georgia, I wouldn’t want somebody messing with my head all day.

‘Plus, we all want it to be as real as possible. So I was, like, let’s go for it, take the hair off. Put a lot of sunscreen on, though!’

The latest episode of The Walking Dead shifted perspective to Michonne, as the survivors all look ahead to the Kingdom’s festival.

The next episode is titled The Calm Before, with an official synopsis reading: ‘The fair at the Kingdom is underway, with all four communities coming together in celebration for the first time in years; while some pacts are renewed, other deals will come at a much steeper price.’

The Walking Dead continues on AMC Sundays and airs Fox UK Mondays at 9pm. You can catch-up on NOW TV.

The Grand Tour’s James May has been hailed one of the nicest neighbours, after he demolished a bunch of properties to make way for a bigger, better house for himself.

While many may see this sort of construction work, which may take 12 months, as a hindrance to one’s own space, May apparently included his neighbours every step of the way.

Isn’t that sweet?

The presenter, 56, who is currently filming for his latest project Our Man In…Japan (in Japan), has been working on the swanky refurb for several years now, after purchasing the property next to his main west London pad.

But instead of going ahead and submitting plans to the council, he decided to prepare everything first and discuss it with residents nearby. In November, May wrote a letter to all of his neighbours in Hammersmith, inviting them along to a two-hour consultation meeting.

The house he’s lived in with partner, dance critic Sarah Frater, has now gone, after he purchased the £325,000 home in 2000. He’s combining the space with a semi-derelict property next door, which he forked out £310,000 for five years ago. Also levelled.

He had to move out of his pile when the workmen came last October, with both new properties now dust to create a super house that will be’ six per cent’ bigger than his old living space.

His automobile collection, which is said to comprise of some 40 motorbikes, a Rolls-Royce, limited edition Ferrari 458 Speciale, a Porsche 911 and a Fiat Panda will have plenty of room in the new garage.

All about the balance there.

According to plans of the 1950s-era home, approval consists of one property changing from commercial use to residential, plus the demolition of the properties to rebuild into one two-storey building with a garage on the ground floor.

His neighbours seem totally fine with the year’s worth of hammering and banging that may ensue, though, with one saying: ‘I couldn’t wish for a better neighbour than James. He is a delight and has involved us all at every step of the way.’

The former Top Gear star wants to demolish the property he's lived in for 15 years as well as the derelict workshop next door, replacing the properties with a flash new pad. But instead of going ahead and submitting plans to the council, he decided to prepare everything first and discuss it with residents nearby. In November, May wrote a letter to all of his neighbours in Hammersmith, inviting them along to a two-hour consultation meeting.

According to MailOnline, another neighbour agreed: ‘James has been really good and given us lots of information. This will be really good for our street, will be a big improvement on what was there before and the designs are sympathetic to the area.

‘We know it will take a long time with a lot of disruption, but so far, the builders have been great. The new house will look fabulous.’

‘This is a massive job,’ a chirpy builder told the website ‘It will take more than a year to finish, but we are making good progress. We are trying hard to be nice to the neighbours and James is a delight to work for.’

Reps confirmed work was being done, with the star himself saying in 2013 he planned to embark on the improvements for his partner: ‘The permanent and fragrant presence of Woman demands something a bit better.’

The Umbrella Academy is only just getting going now season two has been confirmed.

And while we eagerly await on a date for the next installment to drop, Diego star David Castañeda has revealed the second season is going to be ‘insane.’

Chatting to The Hollywood Reporter, the 29-year-old spoke about his upcoming story line and where he hopes his character will go.

He told the publication: ‘One of the best things about the show is how the characters arc, and it takes time to see people grow out of the traumas that they have.

‘I’d like to see where Diego goes. He’s able to cope with a lot more things, but now he lost his mom, he lost Patch.

‘He could either go completely insane off of it or he might just be a kid.’

He spoke about where Number Two’s character could be taken (Picture: Netflix)

Number Two’s role has differed from the now infamous comics written by the My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way over 10 years ago.

In the books, the character goes by the name of The Kraken, and was given the ability to hold his breath under water.

However, when appearing in the series, it seems his super power has been taken away from him and replaced with the ability to throw things with extreme precision.

After fans were left confused by the change, Castañeda spoke to Digital Spy in order to clear things up.

The star recently cleared up why Diego has no powers (Picture: Netflix)

The actor said: ‘[He] wanted to ground the comic book even more. So for example, Klaus doesn’t levitate in the show, whereas in the comic book he does.’

‘And there’s something about seeing someone who has actually no real supernatural powers and only being able to throw things with precision that kind of makes people be like, “Oh, I can see that, I can put that person in real life and I can see it play out as a human being.”’

He added: ‘You have Luther who has super strength, and you have Allison who can change the reality…

‘And the fact that he can’t even be the one on top in the show, the resentment towards the father plays out even more because he is obviously placed at number two because he doesn’t have the powers one would say are divine.’

The Umbrella Academy is available to watch on Netflix now.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard haven’t had to spice up their sex life after 12 years together

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been dating for 12 years, and married for five and a half – but that doesn’t mean their passion has waned.

The couple have insisted that their sex life is still full of spark, thank you very much, and haven’t had to turn to bondage to spice it up.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that – get yours.

Speaking to People magazine, Dax, 44, said: ‘I wouldn’t say we need spicing up. We haven’t had to turn to leather accoutrements or anything.

‘It’s still functioning quite well.’

Kristen and Dax – who are parents to daughters Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 4 – previously mocked reports that they were turning to group sex and S&M to save their marriage.

Without A Paddle star Daz a screenshot of an email from a publication, reading: ‘Star is working on a story in which a source says that Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have discussed having a threesome and toyed with other kinky things, like S&M and role playing.

‘Sources say that Kristen believes this is insurance against marital meltdown. If you wish to comment on this story, please reply by 12:00pm EST Thursday, 10/11.’

The actor tweeted: ‘The only offensive thing about this bullshit story is that @kristenanniebellisn’t doing all this kinkiness out of horniness, but rather a desperate attempt to save her marriage. I think we all know Bell is a lot more gangster than that. I’ll now give you until 4PM to comment, Star.’

And Kristen, 38, added: ‘I’d love to comment, but its hard to talk with this ball gag in!’

Darn ball gags, always getting in the way.

But even without the ‘leather accoutrements’, the Bell-Shepards are still blissfully in love, and put their passion down to debate.

The Good Place star Kristen said: ‘I didn’t marry you for your pecs. I married you for your mouth. I’ve second-guessed it quite a few times!’

Dax added: ‘No, we stimulate each other a lot with debates, and the great thing is we disagree on 99.9 percent of topics on the planet. There’s always spice to be had.’

Kristen and Dax began dating in 2007, and when they got engaged three years later, they decided to delay their wedding until same-sex marriage was legalised.

The pair tied the knot on 16 October 2013 at the Beverly Hills Courthouse, with Dax revealing that including the cost of fuel to get there, their wedding cost less than £109.

Bargain.

Hot on the heels of the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody is about to come another rock music biopic titled after one of its subject’s mega-hits – Rocketman.

thumbnail for post ID 8967029Juventus accused of 'wasting' Man Utd transfer target Paulo Dybala

Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton as Sir Elton John, follows the iconic musician as he finds success and super-stardom in the music industry, amidst struggles to get to grips with his own mental health and substance abuse issues, and with the hardships he faced when it came to his sexuality.

The film promises a no-holds-barred and, at times, even other-worldly look at the makings of the star and the inner workings of his mind.

Hopefully this will keep Rocketman from facing the same criticism that plagued Bohemian Rhapsody – Metro.co.uk’s Rebecca Lewis said of Bohemian Rhapsody that it ‘never delves deep enough to escape what is essentially a Wikipedia entry.’

It won’t be long until we’ll know for sure however…

When will Rocketman be released in the UK?

Rocketman will hit UK cinemas on Friday, May 24, 2019.

That’s a full week earlier than the Americans will get to see it, with the US release date being 31 May.

In it, we’ll see Taron singing and acting as Elton John, Richard Madden as John’s former manager and former love, Billy Elliot’s Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, a long-time collaborator with John, and Bryce Dallas Howard of The Help fame as John’s mother Sheila Eileen.

Jermaine Pennant split with wife ‘because she wouldn’t have his baby’ – not over CBB cheat claims

Jermaine Pennant has opened up on his marriage, claiming he came to rows with wife Alice Goodwin over their differing plans for children.

Not because of the claims he cheated on her in the Celebrity Big Brother house last year with model Chloe Ayling.

News emerged earlier this month the two had split, before they swiftly reunited before the dust settled. Jermaine, 36, has now explained 33-year-old Alice’s rejection of a baby together left him ‘questioning our bond’ which led to the brief breakup.

Saying he wanted a baby ASAP, he added: ‘That was the argument – when is the right time? There’s never a right time. I started to act like a baby and questioned our bond. We had a row and our rows lead to another row.’

The couple – who married in 2014 – were said to have split months after the former Arsenal player was accused of cheating with Chloe Ayling on Celebrity Big Brother – even going so far as to ditch their wedding rings and wipe their Instagram accounts. It was a break up for the modern age, guys.

When it came to the actual splitting, the former footballer told The Sun: ‘Being immature I unfollowed her on social media and she unfollowed me. She deleted, I deleted. And the next thing you know we split up.

Jermaine hints they’re on the baby track now (Picture: PA)

‘We unfollowed each other to get one jealous and one angry. It was tit for tat.’

After their parting in early March a source said at the time: ‘Like all couples, Jermaine and Alice have their differences but they are determined to keep the family unit together.’

The insider added to The Sun: ‘Jermaine and Alice have had a lot going on, the guest list for the renewal of vows has been an issue, they can’t seem to agree on that and of course – the baby talk, Jermaine is broody but Alice wants timing to be right.

‘Also, Jermaine is getting offered shows around the world and he could be travelling a lot,’

Now they’re back together, Jermaine said he and Alice had another chat about having a family and, according to him, are more on the same page now.

He said: ‘We had another talk and we’ve agreed that there’s never a good time. We’re going to see how the next couple of months go – and then I’m gonna get busy.’

Well, er, good for you.

The pair’s marriage first raised eyebrows after the footballer’s flirting with Chloe in the the Big Brother house, including some suspiciously-placed kisses, shocked viewers.

On the show he also lied about his marriage status, and the even left the show’s wrap party in the early hours with the model, further putting his marriage under the spotlight.

Chloe also claimed she was ‘intimate’ with the footballer while on the Channel 4 show.

Meanwhile, Jermaine refused to take one of Jeremy Kyle’s infamously gruelling lie detector tests – despite insisting that he and his wife were in a good place.

Seems now, they are.

Marvel’s official synopsis for Avengers: Endgame signals end of MCU as we know it

Were no closer to figuring out what goes down (Picture: Marvel)

Marvel has revealed the official synopsis for Avengers: Endgame with just over a month to go until its release.

And unsurprisingly, it’s vague AF.

Whatever, we didn’t want details anyway.

The synopsis popped up on Marvel’s website last night, and confirmed that Endgame is the closer of the 22 film franchise – named The Infinity Saga.

It reads: ‘The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.’

See, we told you it was vague.

However, it does suggest Endgame is the end of the MCU as we know it – could many of our favourite heroes say their farewells in the blockbuster?

Also on the Marvel site is a constantly ticking countdown to the film’s release date, with it currently showing us we have 35 days to go until we finally find out what happens post-snap.

The second trailer for Endgame dropped earlier this month, and signalled that Tony Stark makes it back to earth safely as he is seen back at Avengers HQ.

And the Avengers’ new white suits, similar to those worn in Ant-Man and The Wasp hint that the Quantum Realm and time travel will be used to reverse the effects of the Thanos snap.

The ending of Infinity War saw Thanos, after collecting all of the Infinity Stones, snapping his fingers and wiping out half of humanity – including most of our heroes.

It couldn’t have ended worse for the good guys, with Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Groot, Draz Mantis, Nick Fury and Maria Hill all disintegrating into dust.

But it turns out the snap was originally not even the ending of Infinity War.

Avengers: Endgame hits cinemas on 25 April.

Game of Thrones’ Jaime Lannister gets ‘perfect’ ending in show’s season 8 finale

Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau says Jaime Lannister got ‘the perfect’ send off (Picture: HBO)

Now that the Game of Thrones trailer has been suitably dissected and the official running times of the last ever episodes confirmed, everyone is busy racking their brains over where all our favourite characters could end up,

We already know that the White King has a plot to kill somebody and that the odds for Euon Greyjoy’s survival are looking pretty slim, and now Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has confirmed that Jaime Lannister will get the ‘perfect’ send off in the series eight ending.

Talking about his epic send off, Nikolaj teased: ‘I had a great last scene. It was absolutely beautiful. It was the perfect way to end.

‘Obviously I can’t tell you what the scene was. It wasn’t the final scene (of the series), but it was close to the end, and it was shot at a beautiful location.’

Jaime is heading into battle in season 8 of Game of Thrones (Picture: HBO)

He continued: ‘At this point, I had seen quite a lot of colleagues wrap, so I had seen a lot of tears, beautiful speeches, and I knew what to expect.’

Does this mean Jaime wins the Iron Throne? Does this mean he defeats the White Walkers? Or does this mean he simply escapes the show with his life?

‘I find Jaime so interesting,’ Nikolaj added to Star2. ‘The core of this guy is that he does what he does in the name of love. He’s a complex guy.

‘That’s the key to Game Of Thrones, the characters are never just black and white. Even though his story is set in this fantastical world and his circumstances are extreme, he is relatable.’

Game of Thrones returns 14 April on Sky Atlantic and HBO, and is available to watch on NOW TV.

Stacey Solomon hopes Joe Swash ‘can’t cope’ without her if she dies first

Stacey Solomon has admitted how she hopes partner Joe Swash wouldn’t be able to cope if she died first.

The 29-year-old Loose Women panellist was discussing Netflix series After Life, starring Ricky Gervais, when discussion turned to how they would want their other halves to cope in the event of their death.

Speaking on Loose Women, Stacey explained how she hoped partner Joe Swash will ‘wallow’ for quite some time if she died before him.

‘Is it really bad that I feel like, I hope he can’t cope without me,’ Stacey said. ‘I feel terrible saying that, I really do feel terrible. I don’t know why I open my mouth.

Stacey Solomon wants Joe to ‘wallow for quite some time’ (Picture: ITV)

‘I don’t want him to be happy without me. No, I want him to be happy, but I want him to go through a good period, if I god forbid was to go first, which I hope I don’t, again for selfish reasons.

‘But if that were the case, I’d want him to wallow for quite some time. It’s a terrible thing to say.’

It wasn’t the only admission Stacey made on the show, having also stated how she takes notes during arguments in order to maintain a healthy relationship.

Stacey added: ‘I always get annoyed, I try not to bottle things up but then I try to let things go because everyone’s got an opinion on what you should be doing in the perfect relationship.

‘So now I just do what works for me, which is… I like to write down. I’ve been in relationships before where I’ve been told what has happened and I’ve convinced myself that that’s not the way that it went but had no proof.

Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash (Picture: Jeff Spicer/Getty Images)

‘So now I like to just write it down. If something’s bothered me or upset me or an event has taken place in which I feel I might want to refer to at some point in the near future, I will write it down.

‘Sometimes I will use it if I need to defend myself in a case that is happening. But most of the time it’s just to clarify for me that I’m not going mad.

‘Sometimes you’re in the heat of a relationship and you’re having an argument over something you really believe happened, but they’re convincing you it didn’t. And I’m like, “Let me just check my notes.”’

Stacey and Joe announced they’re expecting their first child together in February earlier this year.

You can catch Loose Women weekdays on ITV at 12.30pm.

Bruno Tonioli shared a racy picture of himself in the garden – and fans are impressed (Picture: Instagram)

Bruno Tonioli has sent fans into a spin after stripping off for a spot of gardening – and taking a photo to document it, of course.

The Strictly Come Dancing star definitely lives by the ‘pictures or it didn’t happen’ motto.

Taking to Instagram, the 63-year-old uploaded a photo of himself wearing nothing but a pair of tight black Speedos. As you do…

‘Loving my hibiscus gardening last Sunday,’ he captioned the shot for his 184k followers.

‘I seriously thought that was in Madame Tussaud’s,’ another said.

The BBC star recently made headlines after opening up on working with Simon Cowell at some point in the near future.

Yes, seriously.

The X Factor head judge has reportedly been in touch with Bruno to bounce some ideas off each other.

‘I’ve told him [Simon] to come up with something new and we’ll think about it,’ he recently told The Sun.

‘We have discussed these things for a number of years but it has never come to anything concrete.

‘You need to be careful when you’ve been on Strictly for 14 weeks, to then go on another show with just a month’s gap for another 10 weeks would be tiresome of the viewers.

‘If he made a US version. I’d be more likely to do that.’

Maybe he could do a gardening show….

I’m Your Biggest Fan: WWE fan cut own hair and glued it to her face to dress as AJ Styles

Sian is all about the AJ Styles life (Picture: getty/ supplied)

The superfan is a brilliant specimen. For eons we’ve worshipped at the altars of sports stars, pop stars, actors, fictional characters, collectibles, art, cars, and just about anything else we can relate to, share with others or simply connect with in some way.

Also known as a ‘fanatic’ (but, let’s face it, ‘fan’ is much more sexy), these superfans have travelled the globe to support their chosen love – and we’ve tracked down some of the most die-hard and dedicated.

Each week we’ll bring you the story of one keen punter who has dedicated their life and time (and money, so.much.money) to supporting someone or something – simply because it brings them immeasurable joy. And that’s what life’s about, right?

Welcome to Metro.co.uk’s super fun weekly series, I’m Your Biggest Fan.

Many wouldn’t even come close to the dedication Sian Bobbett has shown for her love of WWE champ AJ Styles.

The 29-year-old, who hails from North Wales, began dressing as the sleek-haired Smackdown star after falling for his showmanship in 2007.

I'm Your Biggest Fan - WWE picture: supplied metro.co.uk
She’s now aced the cosplay (Picture: supplied)

From there she worked on her outfit – which first began with her gluing her own hair to her face to emulate his beard – and now travels the country impressing other wrestlers with her spot-on ring gear.

So, how did you first get into wrestling and the WWE?

From what I can remember, when I was in high school my friend came around and bought a wrestling video game.

We played that and I probably got hooked then, way back in 2002. It was quite a long time ago now. Then I got out of it again until I started watching it properly in 2005 and that’s when I got really into wrestling.

I remember there was a storyline between Trish Stratus and Mickie James, and they’re two of my favourite wrestlers. I’ve been watching it for a really long time now, it’s stuck with me.

And what about AJ Styles?

I'm Your Biggest Fan - WWE picture: supplied metro.co.uk
It’s kinda brilliant (Picture: supplied)

I’ve been a fan of AJ even before he was in WWE, again, guessing I got into him around 2007-ish. Then, he was in TNA and then it built up from there. He joined the WWE which was a big thing back then and that was in 2016. That’s when I became a huge fan of his because it was easier to watch him.

Honestly, the cosplay started as a complete joke. I got my hair cut, for a character in Arrow I was cosplaying, as Speedy, she has short hair. It grew out a little bit and one day, when people were calling his hair ‘soccer mum hair’, someone said, ‘Oh your hair looks like AJ’s soccer mum hair’. Then a terrible Photoshop edit was made of me as AJ Styles and it stemmed from there – I could cosplay as AJ.

I'm Your Biggest Fan - WWE picture: supplied metro.co.uk
Even the abs (Picture: Supplied)

My first was pretty terrible because I made it myself. I drew the beard on with eyeliner, it was pretty rubbish. Since then I’ve researched accurate costumes and ring gear to what he wears. Most of that I’ve bought to get it properly accurate.

I bought all that and has to discover how to do a beard because I am not blessed to grow a beard like a male.

At one point I used to cut my own hair strands and keep in a jar, and stick it to my face so it looked like an authentic beard. It would take hours to stick this beard on because it was all little pieces.

Then I discovered you can get a lace-front beard which is a lot quicker and can stick to my face, and it takes 20 minutes and it’s done – and you can reuse it.

And how much does this outfit cost?

I'm Your Biggest Fan - WWE picture: supplied metro.co.uk
Sian’s met many a wrestler, including Trish Stratus (Picture: supplied)

When I bought the tights and specially-made stuff, that was about £500. Then you’ve got title belts on top of that, about £200, then this jacket you get from the WWE shop which is about £150.

So it is quite costly but I think it’s worth it because people know you’re trying to be AJ Styles. For me, I’d like my cosplay to be the best I can possibly get it. It’s where most of my money goes.

So, why is AJ your cosplay of choice?

AJ is such a brilliant performer, he is one of the best wrestlers in the world…well, that’s what I believe. He’s captivating and you can tell that is his life. I’m pretty sure he’d do it for free if he could. You can see the amount of hours he puts into it.

What do your mates make of your impressive dedication?

I think at first they were like ‘why are you dressing as this man with a beard?’ As anyone would. But some of my friends also cosplay as wrestlers: I have one who does Triple H, another as Roman Reigns.

I'm Your Biggest Fan - WWE picture: supplied metro.co.uk
She’s gained an epic crew (Picture: supplied)

When we do go to the conventions we do dress up in the wrestling gear and walk around. I think they’re pretty happy I started as they’ve got into the action.

Have you met many of the WWE crew?

One of the main ones I go to is Wales Comic Con and they get a lot of wrestling guests. I met Trish Stratus and Sheamus once filmed a video of me and sent it to AJ styles.

I have no idea if he’s seen it or not, but they’ve said how brilliant the costume is. They knew who I was supposed to be.

What has cosplaying as AJ Styles brought to your life?

There’s this group I didn’t know existed, called World Wrestling Cosplay and they go to a lot of Comic Cons. If I didn’t start cosplaying as AJ Styles I wouldn’t have met these people, and I’ve met a lot of good friends through this. You make friends for life.

There’s just something about wrestling that makes me want to watch more – I love the storylines and what the wrestlers actually do. It brings happiness.

It’s a few hours a week where you can sit down and you don’t have to think about it. It’s something so enjoyable and the live events are mind-blowing. Seeing these people in the flesh that you’ve watched for years.

Then at the Cons you get to meet your heroes and it’s mind-blowing.
