Jonathan Ross reckons older men are ‘threatened’ more than women in today’s climate of feminism but added that ‘representation was crucial’ in a time of change.
The TV show appeared on Loose Women to discuss the return of his chat show, but in doing so walked into to the heavy debate about gender neutrality.
Speaking to the panel, he said: ‘As the youngsters say, I’m fairly “woke”. My kids are very kind of aware. Not so much my son, but my daughters.
‘My youngest [Honey Kinney Ross, 22], she’s set up a thing called Pink Protest, which is a modern activist feminist group, and so I learn a lot from her and I see a lot of things on her Instagram feed which frankly I wish I hadn’t seen. So I kind of know what the modern world’s about.’
Voicing his thoughts on the Fireman Sam debate (where the iconic character was axed as a mascot for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue in favour of gender-neutral fire extinguishers) he said: ‘All these changes, sometimes, and more often it’s men than women, they hang on to the past because they are somewhat threatened by these changes. That’s sad really, and a bit awkward.
‘Someone earlier mentioned they were bringing out a Ms Monopoly – fair enough,’ he continued. ‘I know this sounds awful, but I didn’t know there was inequity in male and female pay in the workplace till about eight years ago. I hadn’t even been aware of it.
‘Of course when you are aware of it, you think that’s nonsense, but I hadn’t even been aware of it.’
‘These sort of changes are crucial because even if it’s sort of just spreading awareness,’ he concluded. ‘It can maybe help to bring about some change.’
Jonathan’s take on the debate is somewhat different to that of Piers Morgan hours earlier, who in a fury declared he ‘now identified as a penguin’ in response to a gender neutral penguin being added to London’s Sea Life.
He’d previously kicked off this week over the idea of a female having a stint as iconic spy, James Bond, saying if it happened he wanted Cinderella rebranded to ‘Cinderfella’.
Loose Women continues weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
