Doctor Who Series 12 leaves fans in shock over major reveal and cliffhanger

Warning: Doctor Who spoilers ahead!

Doctor Who returned in style for the first episode of its 12th series – and to say it ended on a cliffhanger would be a bit of an understatement.

All along we thought O (Sacha Dhawan) was just an old acquaintance of the Doctor and happy to help her on her mission – but it turned out the ‘spymaster’ he kept hinting at was actually the ‘spy…Master’ and he was the Doctor’s oldest enemy in a newly regenerated form.

For dedicated fans of the long-running sci-fi show, this is absolutely huge. The Master is one of the most iconic villains in Doctor Who history and is the closest thing The Doctor has to both an arch-enemy and a best friend.

Yikes (Picture: BBC)

The reveal was expertly paced, with Dhawan (whose casting and presence in the episode wasn’t announced beforehand) bursting into a fit of maniacal laughter that recalled the chaotic energy of both Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight and Andrew Scott’s Moriarty in Sherlock

Ever since its re-boot in 2005, The Master has been an intermittent presence in The Doctor’s adventures. He was first played by Derek Jacobi and John Simm in the third series, before a gender-swapped Mistress debuted, played by The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Michelle Gomez.

Jodie Whittaker

The last we saw of The Master, the character seemed to be dead for good, as both Gomez and Simm returned in Peter Capaldi’s final series in the TARDIS, offing each other in the process.

We obviously have many, many questions about what we’ve just seen but our main concern right now is that The Doctor and her friends have no way to escape an airplane that’s currently crashing.

Oh, The Master is back too. They should probably sort that one out.

Taking to social media after the reveal (which was, we’re happy to say, a genuine, shocking surprise) Doctor Who fans up and down the country were all..well…going a bit nuts.

Yep. Safe to say the Doctor is well and truly back.

Doctor Who returns Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.

Doctor Who series 12: 5 huge questions we have after Spyfall Part One – from Sir Lenny Henry’s enigma to that massive reveal

Doctor Who
So. Many. Questions. (Picture: BBC)

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Spyfall Part One*

Doctor Who returned in style for the first episode of its 12th series and to say we have a lot of questions would be an understatement.

From new alien threats, intriguing character development and the return of a very, very old enemy the episode had a bit of everything for The Doctor’s (Jodie Whittaker) grand return.

In our spoiler-free review of the episode, we called it an action-packed return to form for the long-running sci-fi show, but it’s safe to say there will be plenty of spoilers here, so look away now if you haven’t watched yet.

1. Who exactly are the aliens trying to invade Earth?

Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor in series 12 of Doctor Who
These aliens spell bad news for The Doctor, (Picture: BBC)

The stakes for Spyfall were clear from the off – there’s an extraterrestrial force trying to invade Earth, and they’re inhabiting the bodies of spies as they do so.

What we didn’t get, however, was a clear idea of who these aliens actually are. The Doctor theorised they came from a different dimension or reality altogether, which explained their ghost-like appearance since they don’t have a form on Earth (hence the need for some handy human bodies).

But by the closing moments, we were no closer to figuring out who they are or what they want (apart, that is, from taking over the universe). The Doctor trapped one alien successfully, and its changing form suggests they are humanoid. Was it just us, or did they look vaguely Cybermen-like in shape?

From David Tennant’s era of the Doctor, we know there are thousands of Cybermen trapped in the Void (the space between reality) after the events of series two and we also definitely know the Cybermen are back this season – did we just witness their comeback?

2. Did we see sparks fly between Ryan and Yaz?

Doctor Who
The pair have grown closer (Picture: BBC)

It was nice to see a light bit of comedy tonight as Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) teamed up to investigate the dodgy internet baron Daniel Barton (Sir Lenny Henry).

Going undercover as journalists, the two made a dynamic duo and it was clear from the off that there’s a definite spark between them.

There was a very interesting moment between them both as Yaz was recovering from an alien attack, with Ryan promising to take care of her.

What’s that we see? Sparks flying? It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a couple aboard the TARDIS…but this could all about to change.

3. Seriously, what is up with Daniel Barton?

Lenny Henry Doctor Who
Sir Lenny Henry would actually make a great Bond villain, btw (Photographer: BBC)

Sir Lenny Henry was serving absolute Bond villain realness this evening – from his sharp suit, evil yet perfectly modern lair and even brandishing a gun in a high-octane chase.

There’s still a lot to learn about Barton, however. Initially, we thought he was helping the aliens invade, but it soon became pretty clear that they were working for him.

We also know that the mogul is only 97 percent human thanks to Yaz’s quick scanning, so there’s still a massive question mark over his motivation for wanting to conquer the Earth, considering he’s one of the richest men in the world.

4. The Master. Just…The Master.

Doctor Who
We’re not okay (Picture: BBC)

Yes, we realise this is a statement not a question but OH. MY. What a delicious reveal!

All along we thought O (Sacha Dhawan) was just an old acquaintance of the Doctor and happy to help with her mission – but it turned out the ‘spymaster’ he kept hinting at was actually the ‘spy…Master’ and he was, in fact, the Doctor’s oldest enemy in a newly regenerated form.

While it’s always good to see the Master (and seriously, some impressive madcap energy from Dhawan, who has the makings of a great adversary for Whittaker) his appearance raises more questions than it answers.

How did the Master return from certain death in the Peter Capaldi years? Did he take the form of O just for this episode? Is he working alongside Barton and the aliens or just a trickster on the side looking for some kicks?

SO. MANY. QUESTIONS. And we can’t find to (hopefully) find all the answers as the series continues.

5. What did The Master’s last words to The Doctor mean?

Michelle Gomez as Missy
The last time we saw The Master, he was The Mistress (Picture: BBC)

‘Everything you think you know is a lie.’

Those are the last words The Master says to The Doctor before leaving her, Ryan, Yaz and Graham (Bradley Walsh) to face certain death in a crashing airplane.

But…what do they mean exactly? We can remember from the first trailer for series 12 that a story arc was heavily hinted at, with The Doctor saying ‘something is coming for me.’ But we can’t help but think the seeds for a bigger story were planted in Whittaker’s first series, too.

We’re taking ourselves back to the second instalment of series 11, where The Doctor reacts rather virulent to a mention of ‘the Timeless Child.’

Obviously, these two events have to be connected and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Time Lords – the race of aliens The Doctor belongs to – are involved.

We don’t know about you, but it sounds like a massive conspiracy throughout all of time and space is about to be revealed…

Doctor Who continues Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.

Where have you seen the Dracula cast, including Claes Bang and Dolly Wells, before?

BBC's Dracula 2020
Get the New Year off to a bloody good start (Pictures: BBC)

First introduced to the world in 1897, Dracula has been a villain/hero/anti-hero and everything in-between for centuries.

He’s getting another introduction to the world thanks to the latest BBC adaptation, written by Sherlock writer Mark Gatiss and Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat – and they’re out to give you nightmares.

The show will be split into three 90-minute episodes, and the synopsis reads: ‘In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.’

So who is in the new BBC adaptation of Dracula and what else have they starred in before?

Dracula (Claes Bang)

Claes Bang as dracula
Claes Bang is a beautiful nightmare as Dracula (Picture: PA/BBC)

Fangfully the actor stepping into the iconic role of Count Dracula is no stranger to playing dark and broody.

Claes Bang, 53, is a Danish actor known for roles in The Square opposite The Handmaid’s Tale Elisabeth Moss, The Girl in the Spider’s Web and The Affair.

Speaking with The Guardian about his attraction to the role, Bang said: ‘It was the loneliness of that character that got to me. Imagine what it’s like: it’s a Tuesday evening, 1718, mid-November, you haven’t had any company in your castle for 200 years. There’s a sadness that I really liked.’

Sister Agatha (Dolly Wells)

Dolly Wells and as Sister Agatha in Dracula
Sister Dolly (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Described as a whip-smart nun suffering a loss of faith, Sister Agatha finds a new purpose when she meets Jonathan Harker.

Viewers might recognise Sister Agatha from less-dark fare than Dracula.

Dolly Wells has starred in Bridget Jones’ Diary (and the 2016 sequel Bridget Jones’ Baby) and The IT Crowd.

Jonathan Harker (John Heffernan)

John Heffernan
The character’s first meeting with Dracula and his brides in Stoker’s novel helped create the legend (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Jonathan Harker is one of the first characters introduced in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula, so it’s only fitting he appears in the show.

The character might look familiar to some viewers as actor John Heffernan appeared in Netflix’s The Crown as Lord Altrincham, as well as parts in Luther and the movie Eye in the Sky alongside Helen Mirren.

Mother Superior (Joanna Scanlan)

Joanna Scanlan as Mother Superior
If she could handle The Thick of It’s Malcolm Tucker, she can handle Dracula (Picture: Getty/ BBC)

The character of Mother Superior is the head of a Hungarian chapter of nuns, and is set to clash with Sister Agatha.

The actress playing her, Joanna Scanlan, will be most familiar to viewers for her role as Terri in BBC’s The Thick of It.

She has also starred in Hold the Sunset alongside Gavin and Stacey’s Alison Steadman and the 2017 movie How to Talk to Girls at Parties alongside Nicole Kidman.

Mina (Morfydd Clark)

Morfydd Clark
Actress Morfydd is fresh off another hit BBC adaptation (Picture: Getty Images for HBO)

Best known for Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, and most recently the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials, Morfydd Clark is playing the character of Mina.

Also appearing in some of the episodes include The League of Gentleman’s Lyndsey Marshal, Phantom Thread’s Lujza Richter and The Imitation Game’s Matthew Beard.

Dracula’s first episode airs New Year’s Day from 9pm on BBC One.

You don’t have much longer to wait until the Doctor is back on your screen. Read on to find out when the next episode’s airing…

When is the next Doctor Who on?

Following Spyfall, Part 1, which Metro.co.uk reviewed as an action-packed caper that bodes well for the series ahead, aired tonight at 6:55pm.

The follow-up episode, Spyfall, Part 2, will air on Sunday 5 January at 7pm, and each new episode will air on Sunday nights.

Expect some old and new favourites for the upcoming season (Picture: PA)

Fans have had a long wait, with the show not being on air since the 2019 New Year’s Day special.

Filming for the upcoming season began early in 2019, with the Doctor Who Twitter account sharing a cast photo on the first day of production.

Speaking with Digital Spy about Doctor Who’s 12th season, showrunner Chris Chibnall said: ‘We are on a journey with this Doctor and these characters so we want to do big, emotional, action-packed, scary, funny stories and we want to go up a level from last year.

‘Last year was a recruitment year for the show, for the Doctor, getting everybody in. It’s always a stepping on point with a new Doctor, and also bringing that existing audience as well. This year, we’re saying to those people – “OK, here is the amazing world of Doctor Who, here’s lots of treats, here’s lots of new stuff, some old stuff, let’s see what you make of this”. But also for ourselves, the ambition is go up a level. And I think we’ve done that.’

Doctor Who airs Sunday 5 January, 7pm on BBC One.

Doctor Who fans spot strange Torchwood link in Series 12 Episode 1

Doctor Who and Torchwood
We’ve missed this (Picture: BBC)

Warning: Doctor Who Series 12 spoilers ahead!

Doctor Who fans have been left questioning everything after the latest episode’s references to its sister show Torchwood.

How else would we start 2020 other than with a good old touch of nostalgia?

In the action-packed first episode of series 12, The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) was faced with saving the planet once again, with fans being treated to some cracking cameos, including Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry.

However, some fans are fixated on a weird link to Torchwood in the form of the creepy villain’s voice, which many have pointed out is incredibly similar to the 456 from the Children Of Earth series.

For those who don’t know, the 456 was an alien race that used human children as a kind of drug hit, attaching themselves to them over a life support unit. Creepy stuff.

While the ambassador of the species was seemingly killed off in the series, the rest of them simply retreated from Earth, meaning they could theoretically return.

It would definitely be a pretty niche reference but certainly not beyond Who writers.

And the references didn’t end there, with Stephen’s character C actually mentioning the team of alien hunters headed up by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).

‘MI6 has never countenanced the possibility of extraterrestrial life,’ he said. ‘The country has other organisations that deal with all that, Unit, even Torchwood.’

‘They’re all gone, C you took your eye off the horizon,’ the Doctor replied.

Consider us intrigued.

Meanwhile, the end of the episode left fans in shock when it was revealed that new character O (Sacha Dhawan) wasn’t actually just an acquaintance of the Doctor’s, but her old enemy The Master.

Previously played by the likes of Derek Jacobi and John Simm before a gender-swapped version in the form of Michelle Gomez appeared on screen, The Master is one of the most iconic villains in the series – so this is big for Who fans.

And, of course, we were left on a cliffhanger with our faves facing certain death.

We’ve missed this!

Doctor Who returns Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.

Hands down the funniest episode ever (Picture: C4/Love Productions)

The Derry Girls left Great Festive Bake Off viewers in stitches over their disastrous attempt at cooking – and we wish every episode was just like it.

A Great British Bake Off spin-off for the festive season saw the stars of the hit Channel 4 comedy battle it out as they made trifles, canapes, and a showstopper cake – but it’s safe to say it didn’t go to plan for some of them (actually all of them).

The celeb’s got rather competitive as they all wanted to win the prize of Star Baker from judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

The comedy’s most recognisable faces included Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Erin), Nicola Coughlan (Clare), Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (Michelle), Dylan Llewellyn (James) and Siobhan McSweeney (Sister Michael) who all took part in the competition – but it was Saoirse that was crowned the winner.

Bake Off fans quickly took to Twitter to share their delight at the festive episode – with many claiming it was the ‘best ever’.

And if seeing all your favourite Irish legends in one place leaves you hungry for the much-touted third series of Lisa McGee’s hit comedy, don’t worry as Channel 4 has officially announced the next run of episodes is a go.

Derry Girls has become a big hit, with the first episode of series two achieving a consolidated viewership of 3.2million, the biggest UK comedy launch on the network for 15 years.

It may be a new year, but Stormzy and Wiley are still beefing on social media like it’s 2019.

Seriously, get the popcorn out guys, because this stuff is better than any binge-worthy Netflix show.

Wiley inexplicably kicked things off by targeting Stormzy’s latest collaboration with Ed Sheeran, Own It, on Twitter.

The 40-year-old rapper rubbished Stormzy’s claim that he stopped Jay Z rapping on a previous song with Ed, before calling Stormzy a ‘pagan’ (aka a bit of a backstabber).

He posted: ‘I’m old but you was tryna work with jay z who Ed brought in the room Cos if it wasn’t for Ed that session would not of happened lol your not with us your with them #Pagan I am 10 years younger than jay z and I will merc you everyday of the week #YourEasy #TooEasy (sic).’

Eloquently put there, Wiley.

Wiley

Stormzy, 26, responded by calling the Wearing My Rolex rapper a ‘p***k’ who’s always sliding into his DM’s being matey before turning on him on social media.

‘OK I actually think you do crack coz you dm’d me yesterday saying “bro omg let’s build houses in Ghana for our mums” and now you’re here moving mad,’ he ranted.

He went on: ‘You are a p***k coz you dm me all the time like it’s mad love and we’re brothers and then you come on the internet and act weird and the reason that makes you a prick is because you know I won’t ever say anything on the TL because arguing on the net has never been my style.’

Wiley fired back: ‘You ain’t ready for smoke mike your a star go be a star and mind ya own bizness on this 1.’

Aaand back to Stormzy, who called Wiley ‘old’ and ‘mad weird’ – before admitting he was infuriated that Wiley had drawn him out for a ‘cussing match’.

‘I was minding my business you weirdo, you say my name everyday you’re mad weird, all I do is show you love and respect, you old mcs are so weird,’ he said.

Wiley then tried to smooth things over, suggesting they ‘link up and talk’.

But Stormzy was having none of it, replying: ‘Shut up man no one wants to link you you dinosaur lol.’

Is it over? Not yet, folks, there’s more!

Wiley penned: ‘Fam you will never be a better than Mc than me so have a good evening.’

Stormzy replied: ‘Well I’ve got about 15 years to practice so I think I’ll get there lmfao.’

And so on and so forth.

Guys. Come on now.

James Argent pays tribute to BFF Mark Wright for his support after ‘drug overdose’

James Argent has paid tribute to his ‘brother’ Mark Wright for his support.

The 32-year-old gave thanks to his TOWIE co-star for helping him through a turbulent month, which saw him get hospitalised for a ‘drug overdose’.

Arg said he ‘doesn’t know what he’d do’ without Mark, also 32, who visited him at home after his ‘overdose’.

The reality star shared a snap of the pair looking fresh-faced from 2010 next to a more recent selfie on Instagram.

He wrote: ‘Two Essex boys who are literally complete opposites in every way & have not much in common but somehow are the closest of friends & pretty much brothers!

‘2019 & I still don’t know what I’d do without him! Love ya #Marg.’

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6v6951Hsfq/

Arg’s tribute comes after he was reportedly rushed to hospital in December for a suspected drug overdose.

Gemma Collins’ on-off boyfriend was taken to get help after initially ‘refusing’ to go with professionals, who spent three hours with him at his Essex home.

‘Arg was disorientated and looked like he hadn’t eaten in days,’ a friend of the star told The Sun.

‘He has been in denial of how bad it’s got and convinced everyone he’s fine but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

‘He’s been suffering with depression and has been in a bad place for years. This is another blip in his recovery but it is the wake-up call he needs.’

The source added that Arg was ‘desperate to be happy and healthy again’ and was accepting professional help to get over his demons.

Friends reportedly raised the alarm after the television personality failed to attend a fashion party in Dublin.

James has had a tough few months, after Gemma was forced to call the emergency services when he failed to return any messages, leaving her worried.

Doctor Who series 12’s major reveal explained as fans are left shocked

Doctor Who
Did you see it coming? (Picture: BBC)

Warning: Major Doctor Who spoilers ahead!

Doctor Who returned in style for the first episode of its 12th series – and to say it ended on a cliffhanger would be a bit of an understatement.

All along we thought O (Sacha Dhawan) was just an old acquaintance of the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and happy to help her on her mission – but it turned out the ‘spymaster’ he kept hinting at was actually the ‘spy…Master’ and he was actually the Doctor’s oldest enemy in a newly regenerated form.

So, now The Master’s back…what does it all mean? And, while we’re at it, why is The Master so important anyway?!

Who is The Master?

The Master can be best described as The Doctor’s worst enemy and best friend all rolled into one.

Like The Doctor, The Master is also a Time Lord and the two have a storied history together that links all the way back to their childhoods on home planet Gallifrey.

Originally conceived as the Professor Moriarty to the Doctor’s Sherlock Holmes, The Master has had an intermittent presence in adventures on the long-running sci-fi show since his debut all the way back in 1971.

He’s been played by eight different actors in total, including Michelle Gomez who was cast as a gender-swapped regeneration knows as The Mistress.

Basically, The Master is one of Doctor Who’s biggest Big Bads and is up there with the Daleks and the Cybermen in terms of the threat he poses to our favourite hero.

John Simm
John Simm played The Master in the third series in 2007 (Picture: BBC)

What does this mean for The Doctor?

Well, The Master turning up is never good news. The first part of Spyfall made it very clear that the aliens trying to invade Earth are not wholly autonomous.

We thought at first they might be following Daniel Barton (Sir Lenny Henry) but if The Master is good at anything its..well…he does what he says on the tin. We don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to find out that someone else as been pulling Barton’s strings…

So, The Doctor has another enemy to fight, but the Master is not just any old enemy. He knows the Doctor well, better than perhaps anyone else in all of time and space, so whenever the two clash it always gets personal. Which leads us to…

Lenny Henry Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who
Is The Master holding Daniel Barton’s strings? (Picture: BBC)

‘Everything that you know is a lie…’

These were The Master’s parting words to The Doctor at the end of Spyfall. Obviously, this is the very beginning of the series so we’re not going to get any answers yet – but we can (and will!) speculate.

We can remember from the first trailer for series 12 that a story arc was heavily hinted at, with The Doctor saying ‘something is coming for me.’ But we can’t help but think the seeds for a bigger story were planted all the way back in Whittaker’s first series too.

In the second episode of the 11th season, the Doctor is spooked when the very ominous-looking Remnants mention ‘the Timeless Child.’

‘We see deeper though, further back,’ they said. ‘The Timeless Child… we see what’s hidden, even from yourself. The outcast, abandoned and unknown…’

Now, we don’t know about you – but this all screams Time Lord to us. The Doctor has a very tumultuous history with her own species – one that could easily turn very sour.

The old Time Lords have been a bit quiet since being saved from certain death in the 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor – could they return as the ultimate villains of this series?

But basically, the Master is back! Get excited, we know we are.

Doctor Who continues 5 January on BBC One.

Sharing a snap of her dad, she wrote: ‘Always with me and forever in my heart….. #dad #RIP #Theydaythefirstisthehardest #hurls #ohana.’

The 43-year-old also shared a photo of her tattoo, which reads ‘Ohana’ (Hawaiian for ‘family’).

Her friends sent supportive messages, with Alan Carr telling her: ‘Aww bless you! Stay strong,’ while Strictly’s Katya Jones commented heart emojis.

Lisa has been in the midst of a divorce from her ex-husband Ant, with it recently being claimed that she would be ‘crushed’ if he proposes to his girlfriend Anne-Marie Corbett.

‘Lisa feels as if every time something good happens right now Ant manages to ruin it,’ an insider told The Sun. ‘She is preparing herself for an announcement in the New Year that Ant and Anne Marie are engaged.

‘She knows it’ll be crushing but she’s anticipating it which she hopes won’t be as much of a blow if it does.’

The make-up artist, 43, and I’m A Celebrity presenter, 44, divorced in October 2018 after 23 years together, with Ant moving on with his former assistant Anne-Marie shortly after announcing their split in early 2018.

The Geordie TV star now lives with Anne-Marie in a £6 million London pad with her two children and their dogs.

They officially divorced in October last year, but they’ve still in the process of dividing up their assets.

However, Lisa’s not standing for any comments from trolls about their situation.

The make-up artist responded to a fan’s tweet which read: ‘How can 31 million, not be enough for you?! It’s enough for both me and my family put together for life. Just sayin’.

Lisa responded: ‘Don’t believe the lies #justsaying’.

She is said to have turned down a multi-million pound settlement offer from Ant to get their divorce finalised, in favour of having her day in court instead.

Joel Dommett has fears over the UK’s new talent show The Masked Singer as he hopes it ‘will do as well as the American version’.

The Extra Camp host with be taking the reigns by presenting the new ITV show, which will see celebrities all dressed up in disguise – and the star-studded judging panel will have to guess who they are with just a few clues.

Joining Joel are celebrity judges Davina McCall, Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross and Ken Jeong.

Speaking ahead of the first episode which airs on Saturday, the comedian told Metro.co.uk: ‘I really hope it will do as well as the American version.

‘I’ve just been in Australia and they’ve got a version there as well, and that did really well.

‘And it’s in Germany as well. So it’s done really well in every country it’s been in, so I kind of hope that the English people love it as much as everyone else does.’

But can you guess who is who? (Photo by Vincent Dolman/ITV/REX)

Speaking about the concept of the talent show, he continued: ‘It’s just so joyous. It’s so different to anything else we’ve seen before and it’s quite tongue in cheek about other shows that might look similar.

‘It’s really lovely to see that fun back on television on Saturday nights again and it’s just really great. I never enjoy watching stuff I’m in and I really enjoyed that.’

The 34-year-old has also teased fans about some of the mystery celebrities taking part as he promised some ‘big names’.

He added: ‘They come from very different facets of life and they’re definitely way better than I anticipated them to be, which is great.

‘I think we all felt a lot of pressure in terms of we knew how much it relied on the cast because if it was disappointment after disappointment after disappointment, people would just turn off. But it really delivers on every level. There are some people in there that you would not anticipate on them doing a show like this at all.

‘It’s nice to find out why they did it and what they got out of it… it’s a lot of emotion for people a lot of the time. And that’s what brings a lot of heart to it, that reason why people have done it.

‘And it’s nice to see people doing things for not necessarily a selfish reason… People found out a lot about themselves as they went further and pushed themselves further.’

The Masked Singer airs on ITV on January 4.

Did you spot the sneaky Sherlock Easter egg in tonight’s Dracula?

*Warning: This article contains spoilers from tonight’s opening episode of Dracula on BBC One.

Dracula finally got his teeth stuck into 2020 tonight as Stephen Moffatt and Mark Gatiss’s vamp rang in the New Year with a naked bloodbath. Amen.

The masterminds behind easily one of the best shows of the decade in Sherlock have revived another classic literary hero, and Claes Bang’s beast on the BBC was another huge triumph.

While the writers have cast doubt on another series of Sherlock, which comes as no surprise considering Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s public spat, they did pay homage to the British sleuth.

Did you spot it?

Midway through tonight’s instalment, Sister Agatha (played by Dolly Wells) floored Jonathan Harker (John Heffernan) by revealing the suspiciously quiet nun beside her throughout his interrogation was actually his fiancée, Mina (Morfydd Clark).

‘I apologise for the deception; it was necessary she heard the story from your own lips,’ Agatha, who later turned out to be revealed as Van Helsing teased.

And then you may have missed:

‘Having established your identity, it was not difficult to trace you back to England and find your worried fiancé. I have a detective acquaintance in London.’

During the Dracula world premiere, Moffat and Gatiss – who also cleared up Dracula’s sexuality – confirmed said detective is, of course, our Sherlock.

Claes, 53, also dissected those closing moments of Dracula terrorising the convent completely naked, filming the scene in nothing but his birthday suit for five days in below-freezing temperatures. Thankfully it paid off – we’re sure you’ll agree.

Dracula continues tomorrow night at 9pm on BBC One.

Dracula launched tonight with a spectacular bloodbath drenched in golden nuggets for viewers to sink their teeth into, closing with Claes Bang’s vamp breaking into Sister Agatha’s convent – naked.

Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffatt’s drama was packed with unapologetic gore, nudity and melted down sex toys rarely seen on the BBC, and Claes, 52, voluntarily stepped up to suffer for his art. Thankfully, it paid off.

The Danish-born actor actually put his hand up to film the final moments of tonight’s premiere in the buff, taking the plunge in below-freezing temperatures.

‘The very lovely thing about that scene is we went around to Slovakia to shoot it because you can’t shoot something like that in the UK but we couldn’t shoot the whole thing there,’ Claes explained during the Dracula World Premiere.

‘We shot the whole thing across three days, I think, and then we came back and did another two days here so it took five days [to film].

‘I have to say, I was the one who said he should not wear any clothes. I know it’s slightly weird but it was written like that and I think it has an impact that he was there with no clothes on, to some extent.’

‘It was about minus five in Slovakia,’ Mark chipped in.

‘Yes, and it’s 10 minutes that whole scene and we did that whole scene every time,’ Cleas stressed.

His co-star Dolly Wells, who is an undisputed triumph as the comical but ferocious Agatha – or Van Helsing as we discovered tonight – joked working with the naked Dane was ‘ghastly’.

‘I felt quite guilty because I had long johns, I had so many clothes on,’ she grinned.

Tonight’s episode also included a hidden Sherlock Easter egg, which if you blinked at all during the 90 minutes (why would you?) it could have been missed.

Dracula continues tomorrow night at 9pm on BBC One.

Dracula: What does Van Helsing twist mean and will Sherlock make a cameo? Burning questions after episode 1

All the burning questions from tonight’s Dracula (Picture: BBC/Netflix/Getty)

*Warning: This article contains spoilers from Dracula episode one.

Who knew we needed another Dracula, eh? Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss brought the vampire back to life for his 1000th reincarnation tonight for a bold blood-soaked horror bound to have brought gasps all over the country in the ghoulish BBC drama.

Episode one introduced the comical but ferocious Sister Agatha, who was later revealed to be Agatha Van Helsing – the arch-nemesis of Bram Stoker’s beast.

While we watched in horror as Dracula played with his unfortunate houseguest Jonathan Harker (John Heffernan) for 60 minutes, the solicitor recalled his stay with the Count to Agatha and a suspiciously silent nun, who turned out to be his fiancée, Mina.

After a month, Dracula tracked down his prey in the convent, squaring up to a miraculously unfazed Agatha before slaughtering all her sisters in a naked bloodbath. It was quite something.

And after the 90-minute feature-length introduction to 2020’s most sinister new creation, we have plenty of questions ahead of episode two.

How will Sister Agatha and Mina get out of this one?

Tonight’s nail-biter closed with Agatha and Mina in quite the predicament after hiding from Dracula in the laboratory. Johnny came trawling into the cellar, pleading with Mina to invite him into their nest, which, against Agatha’s judgment, she obliged. Only, after realising Johnny’s blue eyes had changed colour and hiding beneath them was Dracula, who brutally killed her fiancé and used his face as a mask.

In turn, the sisters have found themselves trapped with Drac with nowhere to turn. How they could possibly escape? Your guess is as good as ours.

What does the Van Helsing twist mean?

Sister Agatha in Dracula
Sister Agatha is actually Sister Agatha Van Helsing in Dracula (Picture: BBC)

After licking up Agatha’s blood, Dracula realised she was a greater foe than he was prepared for – Van Helsing. Professor Abraham Van Helsing was the fearless vampire hunter in Stoker’s 1897 gothic novel Dracula, which subsequently explains Agatha’s profound wealth of knowledge about the creature.

‘I’m your every nightmare at once; an educated woman in a crucifix,’ Agatha hissed at Dracula tonight. We’re ready for it.

What is Agatha’s back story?

Dolly Wells as Sister Agatha
Sister Agatha’s knowledge of the vamp raises questions (Picture: BBC)

After Moffat and Gatiss switched up Van Helsing for a welcomed twist, perhaps we’ll discover more of Agatha’s backstory, including where her fascination with Dracula came from. Was Professor Abraham her father? Hopefully Moffatt and Gatiss have been a little more inventive than that.

Why do the crosses work against Dracula?

‘You’ll never guess why,’ Dracula smirked as the sisters frantically darted around the convent being chased by blood-thirsty hounds.

While it’s a long-running myth that Dracula is an evil spirit working with the devil, which explains his aversion to the cross, he confirmed tonight that his repulsion to the crucifix isn’t spiritual at all.

‘He’s terrified of the cross and yet he’s no believer,’ Agatha pondered.

She vowed: ‘Somehow these facts are all the same fact there’s something that Dracula fears most of all and to destroy him, we must discover it.’

What is his weakness? Hopefully, all will be revealed in due course.

Will Sherlock pop up to help Sister Agatha?

Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock
Did you spot the Sherlock Easter egg tonight? (Picture: BBC)

Obviously this is as likely as Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman celebrating New Year’s Day together after that public spat, but did you spot the Sherlock Easter egg? Agatha revealed her friend in London was a detective, which was how she managed to track down Johnathan’s fiancé, Mina.

Moffat and Gatiss confirmed that said detective is, in fact, Sherlock.

Dracula continues tomorrow at 9pm on BBC One.

Netflix’s You season 2: Fans have very specific theory about Joe’s mystery neighbour – and they think it’s his mum

You Season 2
Joe has proven to be a hit with fans despite his problematic behaviour (Picture: Netflix)

Warning: spoilers are ahead, so if you haven’t got to the end of season two yet you might want to turn back now.

Season two of Netflix’s You left fans reeling – and it’s safe to say they weren’t disappointed by the ending either (sorry if you haven’t seen it yet).

Joe Golberg (Penn Badgley) has finally met his match in Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) as it turns out she is just as much as a psycho as he is – and she even went to extreme lengths to keep him around – particularly offing Candace (Ambyr Chambers), Joe’s persevering ex-girlfriend hell-bent on revenge.

However many viewers were left scratching their heads about who Joe’s neighbour is – and one eagled-eye fan has a very specific theory about the mystery woman.

The theory surrounds the ending of Season two when Joe appears to find his next obsession (his new neighbour).

Joe Goldberg You season 2 netflix
Who is Joe’s mystery neighbour? (Picture: Netflix)

‘This is just the beginning. Because this is where I had to be exactly where I had to be to meet You,’ he exclaims in a voiceover while trying to look through a hole in his neighbour’s fence.

‘There you were with your books and your sunshine, so close but worlds away. I will figure out a way. A way to get to you. See you soon, neighbour.’

It would be very easy to assume that the mystery character is just his next ‘target’ – although on fan specifically believes it’s Joe’s mum.

Taking to Twitter they posted: ‘I’m telling y’all the woman at the end is going to be Joe’s mom and not a new girl he’s obsessed with. I think she disappeared and started a new family and Joe finally decided to track her down for obvious reasons… He’s absolutely stalking his mom in S3 #YouSeasonTwo’

Other You fans quickly responded agreeing with the theory.

One commented: ‘Great theory, the woman looks to be possibly married and slightly older. The way her hands and arms look, makes me think so. Why would Joe go for a married woman plus one living so close by. He’s insane but doesn’t seem like something he would do.’

Another added: ‘Yo this theory is freakishly spot on. Thought the same thing cause she looked super old..’

One agreed: ‘I love this theory! I had not thought of this but it makes perfect sense to me!!!.’

Either way, we will just have to wait to find out who the mystery woman is…

You is available to stream on Netflix.

The late Bobbi Kristina Brown’s ex-fiancée Nick Gordon has died from a suspected drug overdose four years after he was found responsible for Bobbi’s death.

It is believed that the 30-year-old had a series of heart attacks after he was rushed into intensive care in Florida on New Year’s Day.

MailOnline reports his family were informed of his death on 1 January after doctors reportedly were unable to revive him.

Gordon’s brother, Jack Walker Jr., confirmed to PEOPLE that he passed away on Wednesday.

‘We are devastated by the loss of my beautiful brother,’ he said in a statement.

‘He leaves a void in the hearts of my family and his friends. Nick’s battle in life was not an easy one. I will be forever grateful that my God afforded a small moment at the very end of Nick’s life, and I was able to hold his hand as he journeyed on.’

Bobbi Kristina – the daughter of Bobby and Whitney Houston – died on 26 July, 2015 after six months in a medically induced coma after being found facedown in a bathtub. She was 22-years-old.

The underlying cause of death was determined as immersion associated with drug intoxication, but the manner of death was undetermined.

A year after Bobbi’s death, her boyfriend Nick was found responsible for Bobbi’s wrongful death and ordered to pay $36 million to Bobbi’s estate.

Nick, 28 was a close friend of the Houston family and was taken in by Whitney as a teenager. Before they got engaged, Bobbi referred to Nick as her ‘big brother’. They announced they had got married in 2014, but it was later revealed they never legally married.

Active Video Games are the secret weapon for your New Year’s Resolution – Reader’s Feature

$

Ring Fit Adventure key art
Ring Fit Adventure – gaming that’s good for you (pic: Nintendo)

A reader suggests playing games like Pokémon Go and Ring Fit Adventure can help keep you fit and help recover from a gluttonous Christmas.

It’s resolution season, and once again, for as long as I can remember, I’ve pledged to become a smarter, fitter, leaner, stronger, wealthier, funnier, and an all-round more appealing/dashingly handsome human being. While I have achieved some success, I have significantly more failures.

Through active video games (AVGs) like Pokémon Go and Ring Fit Adventure I would like you, dear readers, to learn from my successes and failures in the getting fitter, leaner, and stronger aspect of my resolution history.

AVGs offer an incredible, almost utopian promise: you can get fit and play video games at the same time. This is the dream for me, an ideal bridging of two of my favourite aspects of modern culture. Sadly, this logic is not shared across society, something I call the Active Video Game Paradox: I can play games and get fit, two things I love/want/need, but don’t, for some reason…

I wondered why this paradox existed. Ultimately, I think it boils down to the positioning of AVGs, which is as much a curse as it is a gift. You see, in my head, I’m thinking two things:

1. Are AVGs equally/more effective at health promotion and fitness development than sport/exercise?

2. Are AVGs equally/more entertaining, immersive, relaxing, and awesome (plus many, many more adjectives) than traditional, non-active video games?

The answer really needs to be a resounding yes for both, for a rational person to commit lots of time to AVGs. I call this positioning problem The Battle for Attention.

For health and fitness: AVGs like Pokémon Go are an engaging way to increase/maintain a healthy step count. Walking may be great at achieving cardio targets at an introductory fitness level, but there will come a time (a great time of developed fitness) when walking is not enough, although still useful, and different methods will be needed to achieve further progress/benefits. A good step count alone is not all it takes to achieve thriving health and fitness.

Another side of health and fitness, coming recommended at two times a week by the Chief Medical Officer, is muscle-strengthening exercise. This is important for developing muscle strength and bone density, which is awesome for quality of life, health, and longevity. This is where Pokémon Go fails and Ring Fit Adventure steps in with colourful visuals, a classically Nintendo storyline, and social hilarity to boot.

This game is your crash course to the main movement patterns that are useful for everyday living. As before, this is useful up to the point of adaptation, where it stops becoming muscle-strengthening exercise and starts becoming movement maintenance/energy burning. Useful, but eventually not enough to keep you moving forward on your journey to excellent health and fitness.

For AVG engagement there are some standout performers: Just Dance, Beat Saber (deep love), Pokémon Go, and Ring Fit Adventure. All exceptions to the rule, outliers. Ultimately though, non-active games have, on average, more fans/players, less risk attached to investors, bigger budgets, better community infrastructures, and, personally, significantly more engagement across the board.

I remain optimistic that a new experience will be built (maybe even by me…) that has the incredibly gratifying benefits of games and fitness, without compromising on the overall experience of either. Until then, if you’re new to fitness this year, let AVGs such as Pokémon Go and Ring Fit Adventure be your spirit guide, preparing you for an incredibly gratifying existence as a long term benefactor of sport and exercise. When you’re ready.

James Charles denies singing racist ‘N-word’ as fans get #JamesCharlesIsOverParty trending

James Charles has upset fans after appearing to use a racist word while singing along to Saweetie’s My Type on a video recorded on his Instagram account.

#JamesCharlesIsOverParty trended after fans spotted him appearing to sing the n-word, which occurs several times throughout the track, something which he later denied to fans who called him out about it on Twitter.

When a fan tweeted: ‘my guy did u say the n word on ur insta story’, James replied: ‘no? turn up the volume & listen, I skip over it. how stupid would I have to be to confidently record a video of me singing the n word and still have it up the next morning.’

Despite his denial, many fans had already jumped on the hashtag to share the video, tweeting; ‘2020 barely started and James Charles is canceled’ and ‘can you believe james charles was the first person to be cancelled of the decade for saying the n word’.

Others defended the 20-year-old beauty YouTuber, tweeting: ‘Instead of talking about James Charles saying something he didn’t even say let’s talk about the wildfires in Australia that are literally taking out entire suburbs’.

Another added: ‘apparently james charles said the n word .. but we already knew how james is, but y’all cancel him every other month and then still fw him a month later, and buy his s**t.’

It’s not the first time #JamesCharlesIsOverParty has trended, as the make-up star has faced his fair share of controversy in the past.

He got himself in hot water in 2017 after making a joke about Ebola, as well as falling out with Tati Westbrook in 2019 after he promoted a celeb-favourite line of supplements instead of supporting a similar venture of Tati’s, but the pair later sorted their differences.

We can’t wait for series 10 (Picture: ITV)

Brenda Blethyn has teased Vera fans about what we can expect in series 10 – it’s not like we have waited for ages, Brenda.

The actress will be back as our much-loved detective DCI Stanhope in January 2020 as we embark on the new season.

Ahead of the four-part drama, Brenda has given fans a glimpse into what happens – and it turns out TV bosses decided to shake-up the new series by focussing on four brand-new, self-contained stories.

‘Episode one in series 10 is called Blood Will Tell,’ she began.

‘We filmed some of the scenes at the Tan Hill Inn at Swaledale in North Yorkshire which is the highest pub in Britain. It also features an appearance from the Great North Air Ambulance. The people involved in that are fantastic.

‘Episode two, Parent Not Expected, is a story that includes a salmon fishing farm. We filmed that at Burnmouth in the Scottish Borders and other places including Alnwick, Whitley Bay and the Woodhorn Museum near Ashington.

‘It rained and it rained and it rained. We had to keep changing the location because of the rain. Improvising around it but it sometimes proved beneficial.’

She continued: ‘Episode three is called Dirty and is set around a commercial cleaning company. There are some interesting locations including the former Brett Oils factory on the banks of the Tyne in Gateshead opposite the Copthorne Hotel in Newcastle. While episode four, The Escape Ten, included filming at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium.’

The star also exclaimed that she wants to continue filming for as long as she can.

‘I’m fit and well. Why not? It’s a comfort. You want Vera to go on,’ she added.

‘You look forward to doing more. After you’ve had a breather. But I don’t think I can play Vera on a Zimmer. Or maybe I can.’

Recently ITV dropped a first-look clip of series 10 and sees Vera moaning at Aidan Healy (Kenny Doughty) ‘you haven’t got peas with mine, have you?’

To which he responds? ‘Have I ever got peas in yours?’

The trailer then skips to different clips of our favourite detective asking questions and just being generally well…Vera.

‘Get out and start searching,’ she shouts.

‘What have we got? Where did you run? What did you talk about? What do you know?’

Taking to Twitter ITV posted: ‘Aye pet, we’re heading up north because DCI Stanhope is back on the scene.  The new series of Vera. Starts Sunday 12 January only on @ITV @BrendaBlethyn @VeraSeries.’

We can’t wait to see our favourite detective back in action.
