Jason Momoa losing his cool over a rugby game is way too pure for words

Jason Momoa is just too pure for words – but for the purposes of not leaving you hanging we’re going to write a few hundred words about how his recent appearance at a rugby game is what life is made of.

Aquaman donned his jersey and took in the sights, sounds and smells of a recent game the New Zealand All-Blacks were playing in Vancouver this week, as the team took on Canada in the HSBC Sevens World Series on Monday.

In a video posted to the actor’s Instagram, he was on the field as his team ran out to massive applause, whoops from Jason, and a series of pyrotechnics.

Jason looked like an old-timey bank robber, sure, but his face is pure delight (Picture: Getty Images North America)

It’s all very dramatic.

‘@worldrugby@worldrugby7s my first 7s tournament,’ Jason wrote alongside the clip. ‘So thankful to meet the @allblacks7s and go on the field. Win or lose. I bleed all black. @allblacks Mahalo @glennennis love u bro Aloha j.’

After the squad passed by him, he ran back over to his post on the sidelines, the camera going all haphazard and all over the place and we had no idea what we were looking at.

But we know Jason was loving it sick, as he said: ‘That was f**king awesome!’

He was in his element (Picture: AP)

It didn’t take long for social media to notice, with the TV crews fixed firmly on the movie star – when not covering the game, of course – and boy does Jason, with his pink scrunchie on his wrist, give you all the feels.

Watching from eye-level with the players, he cheered his team on and later met the players as they made their triumphant return to the locker rooms.

‘That was so epic!’ the 39-year-old said as he shook the hands of each player so energetically we could feel it all the way in Blighty.

Speaking with press following the game, he said: ‘It’s just the ultimate sport, to me. There’s no pads. I grew up in America we didn’t have this much, especially where I grew up we played more hockey.

‘But when I went down and lived in Australia and New Zealand… it’s just my favourite.’

He added: ‘I’ve never seen the sevens before… It’s so great and fast-paced: I love it.’

As he spotted himself on the jumbotron during the game, the Game Of Thrones star couldn’t help but give his crew little cheer and some passionate hand signs.

Naturally, the crowd went flippin’ wild for their celebrity fieldside comrade.

As you would.

Jason is Hawaiian-born but is convinced deep down his roots are in Aotearoa – New Zealand’s Māori name.

‘The Momoa lineage goes back nine generations in Hawaii but we actually found out we came from Aotearoa – which means we left Hawaii, went down to Aotearoa and then back. That’s my line,’ he told Newshub.

‘When I was a baby I saw pictures of New Zealand. I’ve been just pulled there and the moment I set foot there it was the only place on earth I’ve felt that this is exactly where I’m from – not even Hawaii has done that for me – I’m so connected to Aotearoa, on a higher level.

‘I know I’m from there.’

Fans are just weeks away from finally seeing the Batman himself in Gotham (Picture: Fox)

Gotham season five has supposedly ‘revealed’ Batman’s brand new suit ahead of the show’s final ever series.

Just three episodes stand before the final, with the most recent installment being the last one to be filmed, and if this spoiler pic is anything to go by, the superhero is going to be given an epic debut and send off.

Yesterday, an image began leaking on social media of a brand new Batsuit, getting viewers hyped that it’ll be the official costume that will be worn in the upcoming finale in a few weeks time.

Fans have been sitting tightly since Gotham’s first ever season to see Bruce Wayne become Batman himself and this has gone down an absolute treat, obviously.

Is this Batman’s new Batsuit for Gotham? (Picture: Twitter)

‘Probably Batman costume after the time jump, I’m still not sure if is, but I hope it is. It is perfect…’ wrote one, with another echoing: ‘I like it, can’t wait to see it on TV.’

The series is preparing to take a 10-year time jump which will bring Batman and Joker to life and we literally cannot wait.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cameron Monaghan said: ‘All I’ll say is when you have an episode that’s a full-on Batman episode running around in the future, you’re going to have characters that you’ll expect to see.

‘I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say at this point that it’s 10 years in the future — that’s been talked about openly by the producers and showrunners,’ he added.

‘I don’t want to say exactly what my role in that is, but it was kick ass. It’s one of the coolest opportunities I’ve ever had.’

Catch Gotham on Netflix now. Season five is airing on Fox in the US, and will be added for the UK at a later date.

Netflix is trolling us now as it announces third Christmas Prince movie A Royal Baby

Oh, goodie, another one (Picture: Netflix)

We’ve barely recovered from the massacre on our senses that was 2018’s A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, but before we can even enjoy Easter Netflix has announced the third royal movie in the festive series is among us.

And because we can’t have nice things, this one will be all about from regal sprog after the title was unveiled as A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby.

How original.

The streaming giant announced ‘some personal news’ on Monday in the divisive series that just keeps on trucking as we hate-watch with gilded glee.

After the See What’s Next Twitter account shared an image of a sonogram (grab the bucket) and a baby wearing a crown (okay, please hold back our hair), Netflix itself confirmed the addition on its own official channel.

‘The love is multiplying!’ the message read, as the world digested how they felt about it all.

Turns out, we’re still pretty flippin’ divided over whether or not we like this whole gag-worthy palaver.

‘When during the 2nd movie did Netflix think ‘gee let’s do a 3rd one’ The first one was ok,’ one punter asked, as many nodded in unison. ‘The second one was awful. This one scares me.’

Another felt the promo pic was really something, as they added: ‘They photoshopped a CROWN on an ULTRASOUND PHOTO.’

Some who fell under the ‘hate-watching’ banner, that is, the ones who felt the flick was much like a train crash – one simply cannot look away – were a little more receptive.

If anything, it gave them something to do at Christmas, we suppose?

One chilled dude quipped: ‘I didn’t ask for this, but I’m not mad.’

Another echoed those sentiments as they wrote: ‘I love that Netflix doesn’t know when to stop because I am going to watch this and LOVE it.’

The OG Christmas Prince which hit our screens two festive seasons ago centred on journalist Amber Moore, played by Rose McIver, who travels to the make-believe royal country Aldovia where she meets Prince Richard played by Divergent’s Ben Lamb.

They fall in love. The end.

Then the second whopper in the series focused on their wedding (which was announced around the same time as Harry and Meghan’s wedding, surprise surprise) and focused on Amber and Rich’s engagement.

Guess now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are having a royal baby, Netflix is all about capitalising on those worldwide feels, eh?

Oh, who are we kidding – we can’t wait to bunker down and eat up the next instalment.

Mark Ronson criticises ‘tarring’ of Michael Jackson’s name despite not watching Leaving Neverland

Mark Ronson has criticised the ‘tarring’ of Michael Jackson’s name, despite not having watched HBO’s Leaving Neverland documentary.

The DJ has spoken out about the singer after interest in the allegations against him was reignited following the two-part documentary, which sees Wade Robson and James Safechuck accuse Jackson of molesting them as children.

Emphatic about the Billie Jean singer’s influence on music, Mark said: ‘I don’t want to say anything until I see the documentary but, yeah, [Jackson is] a fucking giant part of music,’

He added: ‘It’s perhaps one of the biggest influences, between the work and the production and everything, it’s one of the biggest – it looms largest over modern R&B and soul and pop music than anything else.’

‘So if that becomes tarred, it’s kind of like in those movies where they’re like the space-time continuum has collapsed,’ he added to NME.

The 43-year-old has made no secret of being a big MJ fan, releasing his mash-up track Diamonds Are Invincible on what would have been the King Of Pop’s 60th birthday.

And he’s not the only musician to refrain from condemning the star following the accusations, as Peter Andre recently admitted he was ‘devastated’ he lost out on the chance to meet Michael when accuser Wade Robson won the dance competition that he says started the abuse.

‘I was sad for months and months afterwards because the prize was to meet him and I never did – Michael’s album Off The Wall was the first I ever bought,’ he revealed to The Sun.

The Mysterious Girl singer also revealed he will continue to perform Jackson 5 hits on his tour, reasoning: ‘You can’t just ban a man’s music based on accusations.’

However, some are taking a different stance, including Drake, who appears to have axed a Michael Jackson song from his UK tour.

Meanwhile, a video of Michael’s sister LaToya Jackson was recently unearthed, in which she alleged that Michael was a predator, following accusations of molestation made by the father of 13-year-old Jordan Chandler earlier that year.

She said: ‘I love him a great deal, but I cannot and will not be a silent collaborator of his crimes against small, innocent children.’

Cheat episode 1 review: Molly Windsor is a force of nature in twisted game of cat and cat

Katherine Kelly and Molly Windsor star in ITV’s new psychological thriller (Picture: ITV)

Cheat is the stuff of all addictive, binge-worthy dramas. Two flawed, morally grey, loaded and highly intelligent characters go head to head in a bid to one-up the other.

The fact Cheat revolves around university lecturer Leah (Katherine Kelly) and young student Rose (Molly Windsor), makes it all the more thrilling as it’s rare that we get to see women on screen who aren’t instantly likeable and make controversial choices.

Their dangerous game begins after Leah accuses Rose of cheating in an essay. Incensed by the accusation Rose vows to get revenge, but Leah isn’t taking it lying down.

This isn’t a case of cat and mouse, it’s cat and cat; both women circling each other and pushing buttons. What’s good is that there is no hero or villain in the scenario, although the show does resort to the tired ‘woman-is-sexual-and-therefore-bad’ trope with Rose’s hold over Ben (Burn Gorman), and her manipulation of Adam (Tom Goodman-Hill).

What happened to Adam? (Picture: ITV0

Director Louise Hooper’s choice to film a dark story against a backdrop of a beautiful, sweltering summer in Cambridge amps up the tension, sexual and otherwise, and highlights the uncomfortably human actions of the main characters. The stunning drone shot of Leah cycling to work contrasts sharply with her masturbating in the toilets, the camera lingering, making Rose’s interruption all the more terrible.

Moments of high drama play out like a horror movie – bumps in the night, unlocked doors, a growing sense of dread. Leah’s poor cat getting butchered was a horrific, yet deliciously twisted, pay off. Hopefully the conclusion to Adam getting butchered will be just as satisfying. Dangling his death in front of us as a cliffhanger was a clever move, but you’re going to have to keep guessing whodunnit for a couple of nights yet.

It’s a game of cat and cat between Rose and Leah (Picture: ITV)

All praise has to go to the two leads, in particular Windsor, who won a best actress Bafta for her role in the critically acclaimed Three Girls. We predict many more trophies in Molly’s future for bringing Rose to life in such a captivating way.

Molly Windsor is brilliant (Picture: ITV)

Vampish, feline yet childlike at the same time, every time she smiles it’s terrifying, but you can’t wait to see what she does next. Luckily with episode two airing tomorrow night, the wait won’t be very long.

Cheat continues Tuesday at 9pm on ITV

Cheat episode 1: 7 burning questions we need answered

The first episode of Cheat has aired and we have questions (Picture: ITV)

Warning: This article contains spoilers for episode one of Cheat

The game is on between Leah and Rose in Cheat as their attempts to outplay each other hit the ground running.

Leah accused student Rose of cheating on an essay, which Rose took as a personal attack and has since been turning all her energy to making Leah squirm.

But Leah isn’t about to take it lying down and hit back at Rose just as maliciously, showing her up in front of her classmates.

And things are only going to escalate from here as Adam’s shocking fate was revealed in the final seconds – with no further detail given.

1. Why are Leah and Rose in trouble with the police?

We know they’ve been arrested from the short scene of DI Hammond and DS Bould discussing if ‘they’ve got the right one’. What are they in for?

2. Is Rose going to sleep with Adam?

Their charged scene together made it seem as though things were heading that way, but Rose made a swift exit. We have a feeling it won’t be the last time either – it would be the ultimate way to get at Leah.

Will Adam cheat on Leah with Rose (Picture: ITV)

3. What does Rose have over Ben?

Given that all she had to do was flutter her eyelashes and he turned to mush, we think we know the answer to this question.

4. Have we seen the last of Stephan?

Stephan is Leah’s smooth-talking colleague, but it became clear in the toilets that she wants him to be more than that. Is he attracted to Leah too? And with friction in Adam and Leah’s marriage, might she make a move?

5. Who was Amy’s date?

Amy couldn’t wait to spill the beans about her ‘walk of shame’ (or not) after her date took a steamy turn.

Was this just small talk or is there about to be a twist concerning her mystery man?

Imagine if it turns out to be Stephan…

6. Did Rose kill Leah’s cat?

Poor Betsy met a grisly end and Leah is convinced Rose did it.

To be honest, so are we.

7. How did Adam die?

The burning question. Anyone hoping for a quick answer is going to be left disappointed.

Or even intrigued…

Mary Berry sets Twitter on fire as crude moment takes centre stage in new show

Mary Berry’s Quick Cooking featured a cheeky camera shot (Picture: BBC)

*Warning, this is NSFW.*

Mary Berry was back with her cheeky innuendos during her first ever episode of new TV show Quick Cooking.

Well, kinda…

The 83-year-old former Great British Bake Off judge had viewers in hysterics when they noticed a camera shot of four blocks of cheese had blocked out part of the name of a pop-up cocktail bar, you know, so it didn’t quite say ‘cocktail bar’.

After noticing the blunder, fans rushed to Twitter to point it out to others by sharing photos galore, and we are very thankful for their service.

‘Anyone else notice the very interesting bar on tonight’s Mary Berry?’ one wrote, with another echoing the same sentiment: ‘new programme “Quick Cooking” has taken a turn.’

Viewers pointed out the blunder on Twitter (Picture: Twitter)

The first episode followed Mary as she travelled to Rome for the very first time as she sampled the country’s finest dishes, including pizza.

As for the aim of the series, well, it’s to give us meal options that we can make in minutes. Which always seems like a strange concept.

We can understand it if you’re in a mad rush. But in an age where we binge-watch whole series or while away the hours on social media, why should food prep be something that has to be done in as little time as possible?

The series teases: ‘From Marrakech’s medinas, and the cobbled back streets of Rome, to the buzzing West End of London with its fiery China Town kitchens and the festival foodies of Camp Bestival, Mary will experience the flavours, spices, speed and excitement of cuisines that have inspired some of her best quick recipes.’

At the time Mary’s show was announced last year, she said: ‘Being in a rush will never be a problem again. If you’re in a hurry and don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen I can show you a world of delicious, quick dishes to tempt any taste buds.’

Mary Berry’s Quick Cooking continues Monday at 8.30pm on BBC Two.

Alice Cooper defends bandmate Johnny Depp over addiction and abuse claims and says he’s ‘never looked better’

Alice Cooper has been defending his Hollywood Vampires bandmate Johnny Depp and insisted the actor has ‘never been happier’ and ‘never looked better’.

Last year, Johnny was faced with claims he was battling health and addiction issues, along with financial trouble, and he was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard.

He has denied the allegations and recently filed a $50million defamation lawsuit against Amber.

Showing his support for Depp, Cooper has insisted that the rumours surrounding the star are ‘totally not true’.

Speaking to Billboard, he said: ‘All the stuff you heard last year about Johnny, 99% was just bull. I’ve never seen him look better in my life.

‘I’ve never seen him happier. I’ve never heard him play better and the way the press would have it is he’s a total destruction and ready to die. Totally not true.’

Alice said that Johnny has been key in writing new music for Hollywood Vampires’ latest album and claimed there’s a ‘lot of venom’ in the tracks where Depp has vented his frustration at the claims made against him.

Speaking to NME, Cooper said: ‘I tell you, the really interesting thing is going to be the new [Hollywood] Vampires album, because it was written on the road. A lot of it is Johnny Depp’s writing and there’s a lot of venom in his lyrics because of all the crap that went on.’

Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber for $50million (£37.8m) for defamation over an op ed piece she had written for the Washington Post about domestic abuse in December 2018.

Heard’s lawyer responded to Depp’s legal action with a statement that read: ‘‘This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced. ‘Mr. Depp’s actions prove he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behaviour.

‘But while he appears hell-bent on achieving self-destruction, we will prevail in defeating this groundless lawsuit and ending the continued vile harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team.’

Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny wasn’t specifically mentioned in the Washington Post piece, but the actor’s legal team has claimed that the article’s implication was that Depp ‘perpetrated domestic violence against her’ – allegations he ‘categorically’ denies.

The former couple met on the set of The Rum Diary and married four years later in February 2015.

Heard filed for divorce in 2016 and obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp five days after., alleging that the Hollywood star had been verbally and physically abusive towards her.

Amber and Johnny came to a settlement and the restraining order was dismissed, with their joint statement reading: ‘Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.

‘Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm.’

Evan Rachel Wood shares images of self-harm scars as she encourages people to speak about domestic abuse

***Trigger warning: discussion of self-harm.***

Evan Rachel Wood has bravely shared her scars from a period in her life when she was self-harming, as she joined the #IAmNotOK movement this week.

The actress has been open about her struggles with mental health, however never before has she been so open with showing followers her scars from cutting.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, the Westworld star and mother shared an image of herself with self-harming marks running up her arm.

Alongside the image, she revealed she was in an abusive relationship years ago which prompted her to begin self-harming at the time.

Hoping to encourage others to share their experiences with domestic violence to create an important dialogue, the 31-year-old wrote: ‘2 years into my abusive relationship I resorted to self harm.

‘When my abuser would threaten or attack me, I cut my wrist as a way to disarm him.’

She continued: ‘It only made the abuse stop temporarily. At that point I was desperate to stop the abuse and I was too terrified to leave. #IAmNotOk.’

Evan also shared photos from a shoot at the time, saying she was ‘sent home early’ after bursting into tears.

The trending hashtag she attributed her message to, IAmNotOk, was soon flooded with stories from her followers, detailing their own stories of abuse and how the trauma continues to affect them.

It’s not the first time Evan – who has a son with ex-husband Jamie Bell – has opened up about her mental health issues and past with abuse.

She testified before Congress about her experiences with rape and sexual assault, and recently penned an essay about seeking psychiatric treatment after attempting to take her own life.

Writing for Nylon magazine earlier this year, Evan said when she was 22 she called her mother in a moment of clarity, saying she needed to seek treatment. It led to her being diagnosed with PTSD.

‘It was morning; I felt as though I had been hit by a truck. Then with an almost hysterical acceptance, without thinking, I picked up the phone,’ she wrote.

‘It was one of those moments when you have a choice that goes beyond the initial choice you make by calling out for help: You can not die, or you can come back to life.’

She recalls telling her mother: ‘”Mom?… It’s me… I just tried to kill myself… I need to go to a hospital.”‘

Speaking with Dax Shepard for his ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast, she also opened up about the advocacy work she was doing.

‘I’m a survivor myself and it wasn’t until very recently that I really came to terms with everything and was even able to identify what had happened,’ she said. ‘When it happens, it’s very complicated and you lie to yourself, you’re being lied to, you’re being gaslit, you’re in a dangerous situation … you lose a sense of self and a sense of reality because you’re stuck in this kind of nightmare for a while.’

Ed Sheeran’s ‘wildlife pond’ angers neighbours who claim it’s a swimming pool

Ed Sheeran has angered neighbours who claim that his ‘wildlife pond’ could be used as a swimming pool, according to reports.

The Shape Of You singer, who recently secretly married his long-term girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, received retrospective planning permission from his local council for the pond after it was built last year.

However, that was on the condition that it should only be used for wildlife, rather than swimming or leisure.

Tension has now risen among the neighbours, after the 28-year-old added steps and a jetty, ‘in the event of maintenance and emergency.’

Ed Sheeran posts rare picture of 'wife' Cherry Seaborn at the football https://www.instagram.com/p/BqvTilJBroH/

Neighbour Andrew Cattee wrote to the council, arguing: ‘What was initially a wildlife pond has… become a recreational swimming pond, now with the addition of steps, handrail and jetty’.

He added: ‘I am a huge supporter of the creation of ecosystems, especially when it comes to ponds and wetlands.

‘What I would hate to see here is that this is taken one step too far and transformed into an area of development that is for no gain to the wildlife that lives there but only to add to the amusement of those that reside at the property.’

Tony Robinson wrote: ‘I believe that the development of the site is more about creating an environment for a “wild lifestyle” rather than actual “wildlife”!’

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Ed for comment.

And pond (pool?) gate isn’t the only time Ed’s Suffolk estate has hit headlines, after fire services were called to his home back in January.

No one was injured in the ‘small building fire’.

At the time, a fire service spokesman confirmed that three engines were sent down to the scene, saying: ‘Suffolk firefighters were called to a small building fire at 7.33am this morning.’

Ed has been using his £40 million fortune to create his very own property empire by buying four houses next door to each other to create his own estate.

New ITV drama Cheat is getting everyone frustrated about front doors

$

Cheat kicked off on ITV on Monday night getting everyone super frustrated about front doors.

The first episode of the must-see drama, which is running every day until Thursday, saw University lecturer Dr Leah Dale (Katherine Kelly) call final year student Rose (Molly Windsor) out after she submitted a top-class essay.

Of course, there’s more going on than meets the eye as Rose takes the challenge as a personal affront, and what begins as a seemingly open and shut case of academic deception soon spirals out of control.

On the forefront of everyone’s minds though are the doors and namely why they open the wrong way around.

(Picture: ITV)
Cheat viewers didn’t understand why the front door opened outwards (Picture: ITV)

The Chase’s Jenny Ryan aka The Vixen was quick to point this out on Twitter, writing: ‘It’s really annoying me that that door opens outwards. It had better be Chekhov’s Door Direction.’

More viewers quickly joined in the conversation, adding: ‘Whose front door opens outwards’ and ‘Never trust those people whose door opens outwards… they’ll wipe you out without even thinking about it.’

The door became quite a big problem (Picture: Twitter)

Most front doors swing inward, and the justification for it used to be that outswing doors are unsafe because their hinge pins are exposed outside, where they are easily popped out by a burglar to get into the house.

But the inward/outward front door wasn’t the only thing that was grinding audience gears though, as many wondered why Leah left her front door open.

Will front doors be a recurring theme as Cheat continues? We’re not sure we can handle it.

Cheat continues on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.

Ben Affleck swapped his Hollywood red carpet appearances for a father and son day out in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The 46-year-old actor proved he’s ever the doting dad as he stopped by to watch his son Samuel, seven – who he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner – play baseball.

Ben and Samuel were seen wearing matching baseball caps, with the Justice League star helping to get his mini me ready for his big game with a few warm up throws.

Showing him how it’s done, were we Ben?

Affleck was dressed down in jeans, a black tee and grey bomber jacket, while little Samuel was decked out in his team’s baseball kit and looked chuffed to have his famous dad by his side.

Ben is said to ‘love spending time with his family’ and credited them for sticking by him on his exit from rehab four months ago.

‘Somebody’s the mother of your kids, they’re going to be the most important, central person in your life, and that’s good.’

He spoke about being a parent and said: ‘I hope I’m a pretty good dad. I certainly try very hard.

‘I’m lucky they’ve got a great mum, and she helps out a great deal with making sure that we co-parent in as good a way as possible.

‘That’s really the central preoccupation in my life, you know, the focus of my life is what I love doing. It’s what makes me happy and the rest of the stuff kind of follows.’

Ben is said to be dating girlfriend Lindsay Shookus again, after rekindling their romance following their split in August last year.

The movie star recently made headlines for quitting his role as Batman and stepping down from directing new DCEU movie The Batman, set for release in 2021.

Ben had been lined up to play Batman for a third time, but decided to hang up his boots and has only recently revealed why.

Speaking to IGN, Ben revealed he was ‘never happy’ with the script he created for The Batman and because he wasn’t keen on it, he didn’t see the point of making it.

He said: ‘We worked on the script, I was trying to figure out how to crack it, and I was never happy enough with it where I thought it was worth going out and making it, because I just didn’t want to do a version that I wasn’t really excited by.’

Matt Reeves will now direct the movie, while reports suggest Warner Bros are now looking for someone to play a younger Bruce Wayne instead.

Idris Elba reveals he faked being American to land Stringer Bell role on The Wire

Idris Elba has revealed that his big break, bagging the role of Stringer Bell on The Wire, was shrouded in secrecy as he faked being American to get it.

The 46-year-old recalled moving to America, but struggling to find work due to black British actors not being considered for American roles.

‘The feeling was, why would they? You go to McDonald’s to get burgers. You don’t go into McDonald’s to get fish and chips,’ he explained.

After the Luther actor scooped up an audition for the HBO series (following a stint working in a comedy club), he was advised by casting director Alexa Fogel to not let on that he was British.

TELEVISION PROGRAMMES: 'LUTHER', 9pm, BBC1.. Picture shows: Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) & DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) TX: BBC One A SMART but maverick cop whose private life is falling apart returns to work following a controversial incident and finds himself up against an intellectually gifted arch criminal? Yes, we?ve heard it all before, but, before you switch off, this is really rather good. Idris Elba (pictured with Ruth Wilson), London-born star of cult U.S. cop show The Wire, plays DCI John Luther who, following a double murder, finds himself face to face with the evil genius who will be dogging him throughout the six-part series, even as he investigates other cases. Original, perhaps not, but beautifully done and deliciously intriguing ? and the powerfully charismatic Elba is terrific. A very promising ? and classy ? start. THIS PICTURE IS UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL TUES 27th April 2010
He later starred in BBC’s Luther (Picture: Amanda Searle/BBC)

And, according to the the series creator David Simon, that was a wise move, as he admitted that he probably wouldn’t have hired him if he had found out.

‘I was probably in a mode where if I was being asked to take on more Brits, I would’ve been like, “Come on, can’t I get some fucking New Yorkers?”‘ he admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. ‘”I know I can’t get a Baltimore accent, but can I at least get some Americans?”‘

Idris has certainly been keeping himself busy recently, with it being reported that he’s in line to replace Will Smith in the Suicide Squad sequel.

After it was reported that Will wouldn’t be returning, many assumed the same went for his character Deadshot.

Nevertheless, Warner Brothers are keen for Idris to take over the character, after the I Am Legend star was forced to pull out due to scheduling conflicts, according to Variety.

Still, while Suicide Squad might be on the table, Idris has left some fans gutted after he shut down rumours that he would be the next star to play James Bond.

Speaking to Event magazine, the British actor said: ‘Bond is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for that reason, whoever ends up playing it, lives it.

‘You’re that character, and known as that character for many, many years. I’m creating characters now that can still live alongside Idris. Not ones that take over me and solely define me.’

I think we have to take that as a no, guys.

LOS ANGELES - AUGUST 1: "The Date Night Variable" -- With his friends on dates, Raj (Kunal Nayyar, center) must face his loneliness, on the sixth season premiere of THE BIG BANG THEORY, Thursday, Sept. 27 (8:00 - 8:31 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The Big Bang Theory finale date has been confirmed (Picture: CBS)

The Big Bang Theory finale date has been confirmed by cast member Johnny Galecki and it’s all becoming very real.

The 43-year-old actor, who plays Leonard Hofstadter in the CBS sitcom, revealed that there’s under a month left on set with just six episodes left to be shot, explaining that the whole show will be wrapped up by Saturday 6 April.

Johnny also announced that the series’ hotly-anticipated bittersweet ending will air on Thursday 16 May, so set all the calendar alerts, wear black, and prep the tissues.

Taking to Instagram to give us some time to prepare for The Big Bang Theory passing, Johnny wrote: ‘273 episodes filmed. 26 days left on the Big Bang stage.

‘6 episodes to be filmed. 66 days until the 1 hour finale airs. All VERY surreal. Much ❤️ to all the fans.’

At least we’ll be one step closer to finding out whether a baby for Amy and Sheldon is in the pipeline?

Back in February, one of The Big Bang Theory’s executive producers, Eric Kaplan, told Metro.co.uk that the finale episode hadn’t yet been written, but has since teased that the setting has been chosen.

‘I can say that for people who care about these characters, it’s going to be both very surprising, but also very, very emotionally satisfying,’ Eric hinted.

‘It’s hard for me to say of which it will be more, but it will be both, a lot.’

Last month, the sitcom officially kissed goodbye to regular guest star Wil Wheaton in an epic Dungeon and Dragons episode featuring William Shatner.

The Big Bang Theory continues on CBS in the US.

David Bowie’s 1971 Starman demo found languishing in loft after 50 years could fetch £10,000

Do you have a David Bowie demo in your loft? (Picture: Getty Images)

Everyone – check your attics, you may just have a David Bowie demo kicking about.

One such recording, possibly the first time he laid down the track Starman, has been uncovered after languishing in a loft for 50 years.

Thought to be the first recording of the classic, the 1971 tape was given to Kevin Hutchinson by guitarist Mick Ronson who worked on the song.

And now, according to pundits, it could fetch £10,000 when it goes up for auction tomorrow at Omega Auctions in Newton-le-Willows.

On the tape, the late Bowie can be heard telling Ronson he hadn’t finished singing as he tried to cut the recording short.

Labelled David Bowie Rehearsal Tape and thrust into a musty storage box, Hutchinson said at the time he wasn’t too keen on what he’d heard on the tape – Bowie not a big name at that stage.

Oh how he’s eating his words now – and is looking to capitalise by selling the record.

‘I remember listening to it and thinking, This is OK. I didn’t think, this is fantastic…,’ he said.

‘I think it’s phenomenal now, obviously. Now I’m 65 and I played it, I just couldn’t believe how good it is.’

According to Hutchinson, who is selling the tape as part of a ‘decluttering’ of his home, the track only sports Bowie’s vocals and acoustic guitar.

‘You can tell that Mick [Ronson] has never heard the song before because at the end he is just about to turn the tape recorder off and Bowie says, “Hang on. There’s a little bit more”,’ he told Press Association.

‘That’s the La, La, La bit.’

It wasn’t until Hutchinson watched a documentary on Bowie – who died in 2016 – that he remembered about the tape and went to retrieve it post haste.

Speaking of how he believed his wife didn’t believe he was in the possession of an OG Bowie demo, Hutchinson said: ‘…when you say to someone, “I once did some stuff with Mick Ronson and with David Bowie”, people think, “Yeah tell me another one.”

‘But I found it and got my old tape recorder out of the loft as well and threaded the tape into the machine. We couldn’t believe it when we heard it. It’s superb.’

The single was included on 1972’s Ziggy Stardust concept album that launched Bowie’s career and, as they say, the rest is history.

Conor McGregor has reportedly been arrested again for ‘stealing and smashing’ a fan’s phone in Miami.

TMZ reports the UFC fighter ‘slapped the fan’s phone out of their hand’ as they tried to take a picture of him on their way out of the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach.

Conor had allegedly been walking out of the hotel at the same time as the fan at 5am and ‘stomped on the phone several times’ when it fell to the ground.

In a police report obtained by the publication, McGregor allegedly picked up the phone and walked away with it. He was arrested for strong-arm robbery and criminal mischief over $1000.

Metro.co.uk have contacted a rep for Conor.

Conor’s attorney has released a statement to TMZ, it said: ‘Conor McGregor was involved a minor altercation over a cell phone that resulted in a call to law enforcement. Mr McGregor appreciates the response of law enforcement and pledges his full cooperation.’

The sports star was arrested in New York in April last year after attacking a bus of rival UFC fighters during URF 223 fight week – smashing the windows and throwing objects at the bus.

He was charged with assault and criminal mischief, but was released after posting his $50,000 bail.

McGregor pled guilty to one count of disorderly conduct and was given five days of community service, up to three days of anger management evaluation and was required to pay compensation for the damage he caused.

His recent arrest came days after he completed his probation, including five days community work in Brooklyn and completing an anger management class.

McGregor was in Miami with his girlfriend Dee Devlin. They are parents to two children, one-year-old son Conor Jnr and their youngest child who they welcomed together in January, earlier this year.

Conor is yet to confirm the name and gender of his second child, with Irish publications heavily reporting he and Dee welcomed a baby girl and have named her Croia.

Doctor Who’s Tom Baker slams Rowan Atkinson as ‘not very fun to work with’

While many would jump at the opportunity to work with Rowan Atkinson, turns out Tom Baker wasn’t too keen on his experience.

The Doctor Who star acted alongside Mr Bean on an episode of Blackadder back in the day, and said his memories of the legendary Atkinson are a little tainted.

‘It was an incredible performance. Some people were amazed I ever worked again,’ he told Radio Times this week. ‘Rowan Atkinson was so anxious – he wasn’t very fun to work with.’

Well, that’s one way to put it if you want to be honest.

Baker cameoed in the second series of the historical comedy, which was penned by Atkinson and Richard Curtis, as Captain Redbeard Rum.

The 85-year-old former Time Lord made the claim 64-year-old Atkinson asked him to make his performance as ‘boring’ as possible – which is something he said was advice passed onto all guest actors.

Baker said: ‘He took me aside the first afternoon of recording and he said: “You know Tom, I’m very experienced in this and the part you’re playing here, this sea captain, I think you’re actually doing too much. I think he should be as boring as you can make him.”

TELEVISION PROGRAMME:BLACKADDER III PICTURED:Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder) and Tony Robinson (Baldrick) 000333641.jpg
Tony (right) is hopeful the show could make another comeback (Picture: BBC)

‘So, we then had the final run-through, and I did this boring routine, and the producer came down and said, “What’s going on, are you ill?”

‘I said, “No, no, no, I’m just taking in the notes from your boss”. And he then said, “Tom, he does that every week. He gives those same notes to the visitors every week.” Weird isn’t it? A comic genius and yet he has these anxieties.’

Last year Tony Robinson, who played the dim-witted and lovable Baldrick in the much-loved sitcom dropped hints that after a 30-year absence, the show could return for a fifth series.

Speaking to The Sun in September, Tony admitted that he ‘saw a version of the show’ coming back to our screens and said: ‘We’d have to get the old group back together again.

‘I know everyone is busy doing wonderful things, but we all have fond memories so I’m sure we would work it out.’

The show, which focused on different historical periods of British history, was fronted by Atkinson as the eponymous Blackadder, a man of power and influence within the time.

Among the cast members were Hugh Laurie, Brian Blessed and Stephen Fry, who would support the team in their comedic endeavours.

All Steamed up

So it seems to have been a pretty rough few months for Valve. First they have this unexpected new competition from Epic Games, then they get embroiled with all this business over a game called ‘Rape Day’, and then there’s all the reports about them cutting stuff from their VR team and for that Artifact card game.

I started to feel sorry for them, as I would for anyone that was having a bad time of it, but I’m not sure whether most of it isn’t their fault. Their anything goes policy for games was clearly going to lead to a game like Rape Day, and they’re so long-winded with their hardware it seems everything ends up forgotten and half done like the Steam Machine PCs.

I’d never play a game like Artifact but even I thought it seemed unnecessary given so many other similar games exist. Competition from Epic isn’t their fault but when they’re the only game in town they’ve got to expect that won’t last forever. I can only hope this will spur them on to making more games of their own that they can promote as exclusives. But somehow I don’t think things are that simple.

Valve have had a monopoly for too long and Steam hasn’t seemed fair or exciting for ages. I welcome Epic shaking things up a bit and maybe helping to bring back the Valve I used to love so much. You know, the one that used to make games and not just sell them.

Everybody’s doomed

Oh boy did that new Doom movie look terrible. Between this and Sonic The Hedgehog it is just astounding how little these filmmakers care about making decent video game movies. And it’s only going to get worse when Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is a hit because then there’ll be even more attempts and I’m sure they’ll be no better either.

Even it did have a budget in double figures I still don’t really see what a Doom film would be about. The games are about shooting demons and that’s it. Adding backstories and love interests and all the other cliched Hollywood nonsense is not going to make that premise more interesting it’s going to make it worse. And that goes for almost all video game movies.

I just don’t understand why Bethesda is allowing this to happen to Doom. Is it like Marvel and they don’t have the film rights or something?
Rich

GC: We chatted to id Software’s Tom Willits about it back in January and it seems they didn’t get the rights back after the last film, so there’s nothing they can do about it.

Battle of the five armies

I’m struggling to understand what all these non-gaming companies think they’re going to do as well. Microsoft has already said it wants to be the Netflix for gaming, and I’m sure Sony does too, so we’re going to have five companies all trying to do the same thing – three of which have no experience in games and can only pay other to get exclusives?

I mean, I assume there are much cleverer people than me in charge of all this but it wouldn’t be the first time a giant company made a stupid mistake that everyone else could see coming. The other reader is probably right that Google and co. will try and undercut on price but I hope this doesn’t create a race to the bottom where games become devalued and the full price games market collapses.

I don’t want a future where the only games are free-to-play or indie titles.

Unreal Forces

I know nobody is happy about the way EA has been using (or not using) the Star Wars licence but thought I’d link this video which should be of interest to old school fans. It’s a remake of some levels from Dark Forces in Unreal Engine 4 and, as you can see, it looks absolutely stunning.

I think it’s more of a personal project, that the guy (who works at Obsidian) doesn’t intend to make a full game, but it is a look at one of the many things that could have been done if EA could be bothered. This Respawn game is going to have to be really good to make up for all this!
Mazzy

Combat evolved

Assuming that it’ll be a E3, I’ll be very interested to see what Microsoft manage to do with Halo Infinite. I was playing the original the other day, as I’d found my OG Xbox in my parent’s loft, and while it is still surprisingly playable it does feel very old-fashioned, and very slow and clumsy. That’s not a problem, since it is nearly 20 years old, but I’m guessing that Infinite’s approach is going to be the old ‘back to basics’ routine.

But I think Halo is too old for that to work and the update version of it is basically every other modern shooter, because the game was so influential that every permutation of its ideas has already been tried. They already did something different, with Halo 5, and most fans don’t seem to have liked that so I don’t envy the bind they’re in.

It looks like the game’s going with an open world/really big maps, so maybe that will change things up a bit. Perhaps they’ve invented a new game mode that isn’t battle royale but will be something similar. It’s a hell of a difficult job and I wouldn’t want to be the one to try and deal with it all.

Two or more

I’m not at all disappointed in the Shenmue III gameplay trailer. It’s six months from release and hopefully we’ll now see a steady stream of gameplay trailers to help expose the game more.

Personally, I hope it is as good as Shenmue II and I’ll be happy. The facial animation is wooden, but that’s normal for the franchise and I prefer to think of it as anime in style.

The Japanese voice dub is expressive enough that I could feel the emotion without it being shown in the character animations of Shenmue II.

Currently playing: For Honor. And loving it, the single-player was fun and the multiplayer is amazing, earning in-game currency is quite easy. The always online aspect of the game is disappointing and even applies to the single player unfortunately.

Ninjas don’t role-play

Glad to see all the hype for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I love FromSoftware’s stuff and this is sounding like just as good as the previous games. I know some people are upset that it’s not action role-playing game but I think it would’ve been worse if they’d tried to put all that in a ninja game when it’s not necessary.

As GC implied, it already seems a stretch to have bonfires and losing all your progress so I’m happy they didn’t go overboard and turn it into just a reskinned Bloodborne. Don’t understand the lack of reviews though, I hope that doesn’t hurt its chances.

Wise choice

When I first saw the subject of this week’s Hot Topic I thought of so many great melodies, songs, and beats from games that have stuck with me through the years (35 years young – Digitiser reader).

As a big Nintendo fan Zelda: Ocarina Of Time has to be up there, also GoldenEye 007 was great, but for me the best has to be Donkey Kong Country.

Each level had its music catered to how you think the location would sound. David Wise is an amazing composer and I have a real soft spot for the underwater level (Aquatic Ambience).

If you ever want to unwind and relax pop in your ear phones and give it a listen.

I know there’s better songs and lyrics in other games, but for me this game’s music has a special place with me till this day and hearing it brings me nostalgic joy.

A great game, with an equally good soundtrack.

Loving Devil May Cry 5 at the moment and I never played one of the games before, only Bayonetta. Seems like Platinum have some proper competition at last…

A third of a million cheats for Apex Legends on PC alone? That is crazy. When everyone’s a cheat how does that even work? Wouldn’t that just make everything a stalemate?

This week’s Hot Topic

The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Ishi, who asks what is your favourite video game soundtrack of the current generation?

That means anything on the Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, 3DS, or PS Vita – or any new PC game from early 2011 onwards. You can recommend a single song or a whole soundtrack, but we want to know what you think has been the best video game music for the modern formats?

What do you think of current trends in video game music and do you think this generation has been better or worse, in general, for video game music? And do you own any recent soundtracks separately, either as downloads or on CD or vinyl?

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn (3DS) - don't let it pull the wool over your eyes
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn (3DS) – don’t let it pull the wool over your eyes

What could be Nintendo’s last game for the 3DS is a port of one of the best ever Kirby games, but how much extra does it really add?

This could be the end. Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn may well turn out to be the last first party Nintendo title ever released for the 3DS. There certainly aren’t any more scheduled at the moment and while it’s completely possible that Nintendo might dredge up another remaster or low budget release there’s a good chance this is it. But while a port of a nine-year-old Wii game may seem a rather underwhelming way to send off Nintendo’s final portable-only console at least it’s a good game.

Although he’s considered a key Nintendo mascot in America and Japan, it seems fair to say that Kirby does not have anywhere near the same level of cultural cachet in Europe. There are several good reasons for this, including the usual caveat that the NES arrived too late here to make a significant impact. But Kirby games are also always trivially easy, and their particular brand of cuteness is more saccharine compared to other Nintendo games.

This game only tangentially addresses the difficultly issue, but the new art style is so impossibly charming it would take a hardened sociopath, having a particularly miserable day, not to find it completely adorable. As you may gather from the screenshots the idea is that Kirby and all his enemies and allies are made of simple lengths of woollen yarn, while the world in which they inhabit is composed of a wider variety of household fabrics and materials.

The idea was expanded on later with sister title Yoshi’s Woolly World, but there the characters were full 3D creations made from wool rather than just outlined by strands of it. The gimmick isn’t merely visual though but is made a vital part of the gameplay, as parts of the environment are often tied up with thread and yanking them can bring the background together like you were pulling the curtains. You can also swing on buttons, unfasten zips to find secret areas, and climb under the backdrop until you’re visible only as a moving lump beneath it.

Unusually, Kirby doesn’t have his signature ability to suck in enemies and steal their powers. Instead he transforms into various other shapes simply by rearranging his woolly threads to become everything from a dune buggy to a dolphin to a giant missile-firing robot tank. Unlike in a normal Kirby game these transformations become a separate little mini-game, often with slightly different controls that allow the game to become, for a brief time, a 2D racer or shooter.

We hesitate to describe any other specific moments because the primary entertainment offered by the game is all the gloriously twee set pieces and the inventive way they use the game’s graphical gimmicks. As you’d hope, boss battles are a particular highlight, with some superbly comic animation for the various threadbare enemies.

The spectacle does go a long way to making up for the lack of challenge, but the fact that you can never really die means even the most untalented of gamers is going to complete the game pretty quickly. But unlike the interchangeable levels of other Kirby titles the journey here is wonderfully memorable, even if it is all over far too soon.

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn (3DS) - it was better with two people
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn (3DS) – it was better with two people

As the title suggests, there are a number of new features in the 3DS version, most obviously the addition of new hat-themed power-ups that compensate for the inability to suck up enemies by replicating familiar power-ups such as changing Kirby into a Link style warrior with a sword. Which sounds good until you realise that the level design is still the same, so you don’t actually need any of them to beat the level.

There is a new hard mode as well, where you’re constantly followed by a little devil who will try to unravel you if you don’t send him packing. It makes the game more difficult but it also changes the dynamics significantly, which isn’t quite the same as just having a harder version of the same game.

There’s also two new mini-games where you can play as Meta Knight and King Dedede but what there isn’t is the original’s co-op mode. We’re not sure why, as the recent port of Luigi’s Mansion managed to add co-op rather than take it away, but it’s a real shame and removes one of the original version’s best features.

There are also no motion controls in the 3DS version, which may sound like a positive but makes at least one of the transformations a lot harder to control than it used to be. The new whirlwind power-up is also grossly overpowered, as it allows you to jump higher, suck up collectables, and attack enemies; which really is going overboard considering how easy the game is anyway.

Kirby games have always been stuffed full of great ideas wasted on samey level design and a patronisingly low difficultly level, but Kirby’s Epic Yarn was one of the few to try and address those problems. Unfortunately, this remaster manages to unstitch some of those improvements, although thankfully not quite enough to unravel it completely.

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn

In Short: One of the best Kirby games becomes frayed around the edges on the 3DS, with no co-op mode and some poorly thought out extras that would be better off left out.

Pros: Great graphics and consistently inventive set pieces that use the whole ‘Patch World’ motif perfectly. Hard mode and new mini-games are welcome.

Cons: No co-op and new power-ups are at best irrelevant and at worst unbalance the gameplay. Normal mode is very easy and quite short.
